Cellphone as a modem via USB data cable?

#1 Post by babbs »

Hello everyone,

Background:

On Friday, I upgraded my cellphone technology (Samsung N200 -> Samsung PM-A840). I also purchased a data cable from the Sprint store.

After spending about 45 minutes on the phone with Sprint tech support (they know nothing about Linux) to find out if the cable would cause any damage to the phone if used (model not specifically listed as compatible), I just plugged my new phone into the USB cable and plugged the USB port into my Fedora Core 3 box. The cellphone recognized the USB connection once both ends of the cable were plugged in.

Prior to that, I downloaded bitpim-0.8.08-0.i386.rpm from www.bitpim.org . After attaching my cellphone to this system, I "su -" and did:
rpm -U bitpim-0.8.08-0.i386.rpm

Although I haven't traced down the reason I can't rum BitPim, I'm not concerned since I haven't looked for the dependancies yet..

Still in FC3, I launched the "Hardware Browser" to see if the cellphone was detected. It was detected under modems as:
"Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd Z100 Mobile Phone"
Manufacturer: SAMSUNG Electronics Co., Ltd
Driver: visor

With my work laptop, booting to XP, the cell phone was found, but I had to install a driver for the USB connection and then another driver for the cell phone.

Discussion:

I tried to detect this modem via Puppy 1.0.8, but since it was my first boot of this version (LiveCD on my work's XP laptop), I am not confident in saying that Puppy didn't find it, I just couldn't find where Puppy would tell. I did do the boot with the cell phone on and plugged in.

Is it possible that FC3 finding this has something to do with the 2.6.x kernel?

Has anyone had any success with any version of Puppy finding a cell phone as a modem? If the cell phone was found, was any PIM syncing program usable?

Babbs

I'll be keeping an eye on this discussion! I'm about to inherit my daughter's LG VX3200 (Verizon is unloading their Motorola V276 camera phone for free with 2-yr agreement, I'm guessing they're making room for a new model). Since my Nokia 3589i is notoriously incompatible with Linux, it'll soon be relegated to the drawer.

I found this site that's specific to using the LG VX3200 with Linux. Hopefully, it will give you some useful information. No idea yet whether it will be helpful, since I just ordered the Motorola unit.

We need to upgrade our phone soon and will be looking for one that
does a really good job with high speed Internet - one that will seamlessly
interface with a Puppy 2.14 Linux laptop.

We are currently with AllTel, not sure if any of the others are any better.

Need good coverage in central FL, southeast GA, and for the purpose of
travel as much of the USA as possible -- though I anticipate needing to
take advantage of hotspots!

Sprint=GSM/EDGE
I know there are posts here on this, but I can't do three letter searches so You'll have to use that google tool to find it here.

These are somewhat dated, anyone have current info for using cellphone-based
Internet access with Sprint, Verizon, & Alltel?

Also, anyone successfully using a currently available Bluetooth GPS device
with Puppy 2.14?

I think such devices are beyond Puppy. I have a Sierra 875 AirCard plugged into a pcmcia to pci adapter card in my desktop machine that I use to connect to the net through Cingular. It is a usb wireless modem. Puppy sees the adapter card and seems to know a device has been plugged into it but doesn't have a clue what it is or what to do with it. Seirra has supplied kernel modules and they are in the puppy kernel. I have beat my head on the wall trying to get it to work in Puppy. It works great in Vector Linux. I sorry Puppy can't work with this because without internet acess, the Puppy CD is just a coaster for my softdrink can.

That's not true.
Forum member sling-shot has a CDMA phone working with Puppy -

And forum member Mikrodots has a Sierra AC860 card working with Puppy -

And forum member steevieb has a Nokia mobile phone and GPS unit connecting to Puppy with bluetooth!

Not exactly. Sierra does supply device/ppp/chat configuration files.
But the necessary kernel modules (usbserial, serial_cs) are already
contained in Puppy.

I just revisited your original post and realised that we now know your vendor/product numbers, so configuration should now be possible -

I just received this link to a PDF file from Sprint re. access to EVDO from their
systems using Linux:

http://www.evdoforums.com/thread5925.html

Perhaps someone can reverse engineer from this to Puppy Linux and to a
Motorola e815 cellphone?

I just ordered the data cable and the cd (MS version of windows dependent
unfortunately), but I can test ideas to make things work under Linux.

First I will upgrade to 2.16, then try what is already there, as necessary solicit
list members to suggest ways to make this work!

Great find!

Looks like the last three pages are the key, just ignore everything else (it's for pcmia aircards).

Just have to get your device recognized on /dev/ttyUSB0 and it should all be downhill from there.

Have been using my Samsung Soul phone as modem for about 5 years. It has worked on all official puppy's I've used since puppy 412 (I haven't used older puppy's). Detects and works. It uses the visor driver as mentioned in the OP

wonderful tool, easy as puppy. Merci
