eXpand v2.15 - BARBIE REVAMPED

#1 Post by lvds »

FILE IS AVAILABLE HERE:
http://puppyisos.org/isos/2007-01-to-06 ... vamped.iso
File size: 313434112
md5sum: b9f7b17a9c2ba4c34998b57b4d9c5f50

After release of version 2.14 codename "Barbie" by Barry K. there have been
a lot of discussions until release of Community Edition v2.15, about what
kind of interface could suits best women ... In fact there have been enough
suggestions for a complete new release

In an effort to provide our geek ladies a fine computing experience, our
local team have worked on a profound redesigning of our preferred
operating system.

Ladies, and young ladies, i am proud to introduce today the 1st Release
Candidate of a customized distribution dedicated to GIRLS :D
named eXpand v2.15 - Barbie REVAMPED.

Though being still a Release Candidate, it is now stable enough to be used
without majors problems (as far as we know ;-) ) The operating system
requires 170Mo but the ISO file size is biggest because we have
bundled additional software inside the CDROM, so don't be afraid of the
total file size.

The operating system have been profoundly tweaked and finely tuned to
provide as much as possible comfortable computing experience. Articulated
around Firefox (which received many improvements to become completely
stable and speedy) you will have choice between XFCE window
manager (in Xorg mode) or JWM (in Xvesa mode) with fine design,
from look and feel to desktop environment, even cute background images
selection is provided to let you have a desktop like no other ! ;-)

Firefox comes with very useful extensions, such as social browsing
like Stumble Upon, pre-configured bookmarks, complete multimedia
integration for easy listening to online music or viewing at videocasts, a
few other useful addons, and many menu links are setup to connect users
to web2.0 internet applications, but we have also do our best to give enough
tools to offline users.

We have taken great care at the software selection we made. That you
being a Bubbles addict or that you play casually, we choose around
60 games among the very best ones, and you do not need to be
connected to play, go test, these are not "little games" and some are real
big hits in the gamers community !

From Gaming to music creation, chat to office tools, we hope you will have
great time at using our software. The cdrom ISO contains additional
software 1-click easy to install in case you may need. And of course we
welcome your suggestions about corrections or improvements.

We wish you the very best at using eXpand v2.15 BARBIE REVAMPED.
You can give away the CD to your friends or to anyone whom may be
asking for it, but remember: IT IS FREE.
You received it this way, give it this way.

We will come back with other dedicated editions soon, stay tuned !

Best regards,
Laurent.

. . . no gals available, so I downloaded . . . :)
at the time you had a file and md5sum so thought it was OK

The download was 245MB - hope those games are good ;)

Had probs with resolution and mouse AND the md5sum has gone.
I did get a low res screen but no mouse - so may have a faulty iso.

Must be patient. Must be patient.

OK I waited . . .

Any hope? Look forward to it - take your time :)

Hi,

Thank you very much for your patience ;-)
I updated the first post and there is a link where you can download the ISO file.
It will stay there 7 days or more until it is not downloaded by anyone within 7 days. So mirrors are welcome.

I have also uploaded to the FTP for Mark (MU) and sent a PM to keep him inform so the ISO may appear soon on ISO archive i guess.

Meanwhile Raffy informed me PKAG has open another mirror available with FTP and i will upload there too.

Please keep me inform if downloads are ok or not and excuse me again for upload problems. I wish you good times with eXpand, and, yes, Lobster, the games are really good ;-)

About screen resolution, when using eXpand in live-CD mode, when you choose Xorg it is XFCE that will be launched, and choosing Xvesa will launch JWM, in case you need to solve problems. Let me know.

Best regards,
Laurent.

Check the file size, it should be 258.125.824
I had hard time at uploading to free.fr with many disconnections so if your file size is not the correct one i will have to upload again...

Meanwhile i have uploaded on PKAG space with no problem using gFTP so the ISO will be available as soon as PKAG will release it. I will PM him also.

I don't know if Mark will be able to host files as i have seen that eXpand-Dofus is not on the Mark's space but i don't know why.

Best regards,
Laurent.

Thank you very much ! :P

While i am here, i would like to deeply thanks everyone whom helped me to build this release as it have been a great work and i have asked many questions. I received a lot of help and i know this is all because of your help that it has been possible to build this distribution, you are great guys... and girls :D

By the way i hope many of you will have time to test this release. Don't be afraid of the background screen, it changes at every time you reboot the live-cd. Also, i have used the brand new puppyserialdetect from Dougal and i don't know if this is because of my mouse or anything else but it happens once in while the mouse is not seen and i have to shutdown, count 5 and then reboot and it works.... I tested on other computers and it does not happens.

Best regards,
Laurent.

Very nice screen shots! In the past few weeks I have burnt several ISO's of different flavors of Puppy. In the next few days I'll make sure when I have high speed internet to download a copy of your version of Puppy. I hand out copies of different flavors to anyone willing to try Puppy. I is certainly nice to see that teens and women have specific versions to suit them as well!

OK downloaded again and the md5sum checks out

Sadly I could not get it working. Same results as before.

Mouse not working (it is a ps2) and no xorg resolution worked, got 640 x 480 Vesa (but no mouse)

When I tried to edit the xorg configure file this too did not happen :(

Will try on another machine. I am wondering if an IRQ conflict could be the problem somehow, so be interested if others get a working ISO

Thanks for everyones efforts. Seems worthwhile so hope we can get it working :)

Using USB mouse and Xvesa

#13 Post by raffy »

Xorg would not launch, so I tried Xvesa, but got no ps2 mouse working (same as Lobster's). So I plugged in a USB mouse and restarted the PC. Then all the fun started! :D

Side-effect: Now am using two mice and both are working.

I will proudly show this to my kids and give feedback in a week or two of use. Meantime, any tips about how to get Xorg and ps2 mouse working will be appreciated.

Hello Ladies . . .

I'm in (posting from Gal Pup now)

Thanks Raffy, thanks Laurent.

Used the puppy pfix = ram option and during the graphics set up changed to serial mouse
So now with a serial mouse (no USB) and I got in with xorg - but mouse would not work
plugged in the ps2 mouse
pressed ctrl + alt + backspace and ran xorgwizard
xwin

Now I have xorg, working (but very jerky) mouse and full access to the games and internet

This has a LOT to explore. Might powerdown and remove serial mouse

Hi all,

@Lobster and Raffy,

This happens since i have updated the puppyserialdetect coming from Dougal. In /usr/sbin you will find a backup of the previous version of puppyserialdetect in case of need.

I have also noticed it is ok with an USB mouse and Xorg BUT your usb have to be plugged on an USB port with electric alimentation. I have tested on other computers and not all USB ports are the same. For example in a notebook with 4 usb ports, only 1 port was able to handle the mouse correctly !

So test your mouse on every usb ports you have. Meanwhile, we need to connect Dougal to this and send him reports on differents mouse behavior we might find.

I suggest to stay with the new puppyserialdetect from Dougal.

Another trick, on a 3 year old computer i had to disable USB LEGACY for having the USB mouse running ok in Xorg.

I hope you will persist as i can assure you it runs very fine once you have found your needed config. And i think we are working like guides because soon v2.16 will be out with the same updated scripts ;-)

Best regards,
Laurent.

Hi,

yes, perhaps the simpler solution is from now on to use an USB adaptor on PS2 mouses, or a USB mouse ; but choose the USB port you will use carefully as they are not the same, if it does not work on one, move your mouse into another USB port.
raffy wrote:Side-effect: Now am using two mice and both are working.
On notebooks we also have touchpad, working as well ;-)
raffy wrote:I will proudly show this to my kids and give feedback in a week or two of use. Meantime, any tips about how to get Xorg and ps2 mouse working will be appreciated.
Perhaps the simpler will be to use cheap USB/ps2 adaptor for mouse.

...ABOUT FUN NOW :D
Though there are many games for offline use, you will find some great games online. Here is tip. Install JAVA from the more-software menus and then go to fun menu, games websites, then Zylom games... You will find here a selection of what is best running into puppy while being able to play online !!! Boys usually love breakout games (Atlantis and Egypt are really great), while GIRLS love Cake-Mania or Bejeweled, everyone loves RocketMania and Dynomite ;-)

Some games even not need JAVA to be loaded, just test by yourself. A few have been reported as working only with wine.

Anyway, for people having crossover or wine you will notice that by registering yourself FOR FREE you win a FREE downloadable windows game of your choice !

Registering you FOR FREE allows also to participate into high scores contests and have your scores uploaded to Zylom which is great to compare to friends 8)

Best regards,
Laurent.

Thanks lvds,

Posting from xPand v2.15 Barbie revamped now. Had mouse problems with a touchpad on a laptop but I'm on a desktop now. I'm impressed that one of your two extra USB wifi drivers happens to match my wifi stick.

Like the eclectic collection of links, screensavers, changing wallpaper and all that good stuff.

Incidentally, I think Lobster meant "Barbie" to refer to the Australian term for barbecue not the pink-obsessed plastic doll!

Actually, Lobster, can you think of a good code-name for the hermaphrodite version of Puppy that the alien yclept Geoffrey will be creating for us?

Hi,

For all people having mouse problems or usb problems i encourage to post details into this thread
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=17575
so to let know Dougal about and eventually solve problems.

It will be best than to post here. Also send your mouse status by doing the following:

- in a terminal type "puppyserialdetect" and copy results
- in a terminal type "cat /proc/bus/input/devices" and copy results

This will be very helpfull.

Best regards,
Laurent.
