the newer rox uses a different system for mime properties ... shared-mime-info (a gnome thing) is in /root/.local/share/mime and is about 1.5 megs ... it controls what mime types there are, and the mime types are sightly different ... what a mime type does is still contolled by a file in /root/Choices/MIME-types

i did setup some of the mime types, but some have probably been changed ... and i won't know which ones need setting except by trying each one

actually, i had to decide a few things, like whether i would include any config files in my package ... if you leave them out, the package works ok, but many of the rox options need to be setup to work properly, and it doesn't look good when it first starts, with no wallpaper etc etc ... i tried setting it up nicely, and replacing your Choices with my Choices, but it made the package bigger than 1 meg

i compromised by including some config files in Choices, and putting a copy-my-old-pinboard-file in the menu

as far as the mime settings, that is often a personal choice ... the package should probably be setup to have the same mime settings as a standard Puppy ... it will take a while to find all the mime settings that need setting

Puppy's rox is the latest version that does not use shared-mime-info ... the newer rox has some nice features, like recently changed files are shown with bold text, and the permissions window is convenient ... and the newer rox is prettier ... the older rox seems to be adequate for most purposes

i chose to do it that way

i could have left your desktop alone, but it would not look nice ... the new rox also can set the background, when the background is configured, it saves it in your pinboard file ... if i had left it, it would have been a solid brown colour, and not as pretty

also, the fonts are different, because the new rox can use antialiased fonts, and the icons display a little differently ... so your desktop might look strange

i did put an item in the menu to copy your pinboard from the backup ... just right click the ROX-Filer icon in my-roxapps ... you will have no wallpaper after you do that

setting the wallpaper with the new rox is easy ... just right click any icon on your desktop and click Backdrop

you can have problems when you have 2 or 3 different programs each setting the background ... mostly, you might be confused about which program is setting the wallpaper that you are seeing

i was going to change the dotpup a little, probably put the language file in a separate dotpup (as suggested by AlienX), also add a wish Run Action for non-executable tcl files ... and maybe set some of the other run actions

Would there be any way in the next verson you could include some sort of script, that would download the new update, and automaticly reboot and run the update for you?

Since my CD Burner seems not to place nice with puppy, I have to find an outside computer, burn a disk, and bring it back home...

you can set the fonts in rox options in the pinboard section
it's a little different from the older version of rox

if you have Puppy installed on your hard drive (option 1)
it's easy to download the latest iso and update your Puppy

basically, something like,

wget url-4-puppy.iso
wget url-4-puppy.iso.txt
md5sum -c puppy.iso.txt
mount -o loop puppy.iso /mnt/data
cp /mnt/data/vmlinuz /mnt/home/
cp /mnt/data/image.gz /mnt/home/
cp /mnt/data/usr_cram.fs /mnt/home/

then reboot

I looked around awhile back, couldn't see how to do it
(but then I never looked in the manual either).

i'm not sure you can change what font rox uses
(you can specify the fonts the newer rox uses)

you can change the fonts colours, and whether there is a background slab ... that's what i was referring to

i guess it uses the default gtk-1 text font ... maybe changing the gtk-1 theme would change the font it uses ... maybe the fonts could be set in an app-defaults file

And how can I set keyboard shortcuts? Options -> Menus -> Set Keyboard Shortcuts doesn't allow me to do so. Or should I edit /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/menus ?

Btw, when you upload the new rox dotpup, maybe you can upload two versions: 1. with everything; 2. the small one without the language files. This way everybody only needs to download one file.

i did not realize that rox keyboard shortcuts were not enabled

just add this line to /etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc

gtk-can-change-accels = 1

then restart X windows
(reboot or press ctrl+alt+backspace then type startx)

to setup a shortcut key for a rox menu item
move the mouse pointer over the menu item you want
press the key you want associated with the menu item

now when you press that key, it will be as if you clicked that menu item

i don't know if there is a way to unset a shortcut key
but you can do it by setting the key to ctrl+O
then setting the shortcut key for Open AVFS back to ctrl+O

maybe that would be better than using the same config files that the older rox uses

i had to split the rox dotpup into 2 parts anyway
(there's a 1 meg upload limit in the forum)
i could have a single dotpup to install rox
and another dotpup for the language files
this would be no worse than it is now

i don't think i can fit the language files and the shared-mime files and the rox files in under 1 meg ... if someone wants to host the dotpup, it wouldn't be much over 1 meg

i found another Set Run Action that is not setup: .sh files

I like this ROX very much. All I did is change AppsRun for the Trash, by removing the -o in three spots, to stop notices on using it.

uploaded new version of rox 2.2.20 installer

this version sets CHOICESPATH to /root/Choices20
so rox 2.2.20 uses the /root/Choices20/ folder for it's config file and does not use /root/Choices

i put the language files in a separate package

i added some more rox Run Actions, like .tcl

i usually run Puppy at 800x600
and i add -dpi 100 to xextraoptions

i have not changed most of the rox 2.2.20 options from the default values (some i have)

you can set the maximum icon size in rox, options, display.
you can change how rox displays files and folders.
pressing - and = changes the icon size too.

i think you can set more options by editing /root/Choices20/ROX-Filer/Options (or /Choices/, depending which version you are running)

Actually you don't need to redraw the pinboard. The icon will refresh automatically by changing that line:

replace "rox -o -p /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin" with
"rox -x $APPDIR"

Hey thanks! I've been gone (still out of town on dial up) and am glad that you found a fix for that. I will upload a new dot pup when I get back to my high speed connection. I would really like Trash to work well with the new Rox.
