ibiblio.org Linux distros server is down!

#1 Post by BarryK »

This announcement at ibiblio:
Hello everyone,

The storage array holding most of our Linux distributions crashed hard.
Rather than spend over $600 to resurrect 5 year-old hardware that is out
of warranty and was beginning to show signs of failing prior to last
night, we will be speeding up our migration of the distributions onto our
new Netapp disks.

This means much more space on much more stable hardware, but it will
mean waiting until we hear back on a few small technical questions before
we can create the volume and populate it with data.

We sincerely apologize for this outage, and hope to have the volume
accessible again by tomorrow.
I hope it doesn't propogate through to the ibiblio mirrors!

Also, my site is experiencing problems.
This affects the Developer News Blog and the Developer Forum. They are misbehaving, also very slow (I don't know if the slowness is some other factor, as sometimes there is a problem when you are accessing from certain regions).

Thanks Barry. I figured something was up.

I'm glad it didn't happen later as I was about to ask my ISP to add Puppy to their ftp server. They have other Linus distros there and downloads don't count towards my quota. Would have been a little embarrassing to have the site down if they went to have a look.

Is ibiblio the correct site to have them get Puppy from when it's back up?

Don't forget the dotPup installer! The installer doesn't work anymore!

The Puppy dotPups disappeared along with Puppy on the server....

EDIT: Also nluug.nl died too!
(And the FTP of ibiblio came down with the server too.)

It's a conspiracy! puppyfiles.org is down, ibiblio.org is down, nluug.nl is down, gatech.edu is down ... we have been cutoff from the rest of the world. My guess is it's JEALOUSY! :P

And pkagfiles will be down soon, 60+GB in less than an hour. :?
Anyone get a torrent working for the updated final? I've tried a few times to get a trackerless torrent going, to fill in until well seeded. I'd rather not host the tracker myself. No luck so far.

Torrents for the sfs addons would be great too. ;)

Way to hold the fort, PkaG! I notice that Puppy is now up to number 10 on the DW Last 7 days download list and still climbing! 8)

On the 30 day list Puppy is now up to 18, and climbing. Only another 10+ average downloads per day and it will surpass Vector and climb to 17!

All this and only 1 or 2 working mirrors for at least 24hrs!

Thanks, it's just a server that was still up, not now though... 186+GB gone sadly. Things would be much better in ranking & downloads if mirrors didn't go in the dumper all at once.

I've got another decentralized torrent to test. :?:

EDIT: Another torrent that doesn't seem to work, maybe others can help getting torrents working. I'm only trying decentralized torrents only for many reasons. The more that can help the better. :D

The fish done it

#12 Post by Lobster »

:) One kind Puppy has been trying to set up a future server, another has been trying to upload to an existing server (that he does not seem to have access to)

Despite this (or maybe because of it) people are still finding and enjoying Puppy.

Incidentally it is a conspiracy. The fish done it. :D

New mirror (Final - second release)

Hope to have new locations soon :)

More mirrors welcome.

ibiblio.org server update!

#13 Post by WhoDo »

Just downloaded this message from ibiblio.org:
Our RAID controller freaked out!
We're bringing our distributions back online.

We lost nearly 150 distributions when the array storing
them died on the evening of April 9th. If you own a
distribution on ibiblio.org, please visit
http://www.ibiblio.org/help to request that your directory
be recreated. If you have uploaded ISOs to be filed
by our Linux keeper, please do so again. Sorry.

I note that Puppy's directory is still not back in their tree, so maybe we need to comply with their request above?

Cheers.

I have some of the older Puppy-1.xx versions, don't know if ibiblio hosted them.

Disaster is everywhere, especially on the web, time to shore up Puppy again?

ibiblio.org Linux distros server is down!

Posts are appearing in various sections of the forum asking where are the downloads.

Can I suggest that whenever things get back to normal that this information be posted to all the sections as it appears that others are only looking at one or two sections and have missed this announcement

I have already advised what little I know and suggested that they keep a lookout for an announcement but every little helps

I think if Barry edits his post, under the textarea there should be radio-buttons where he can set this thread to "Announcement". That will make it appear in ever section of the forum, at the top in it's own little area.

About 36 hours before I can upload to ibiblio. I need broadband2 access for this, which my relative has, will be there tomorrow evening.

Note, ibiblio created a directory named 'puppy' but unfortunately it used to be 'puppylinux' so I've sent a message can they please change it.

Another suggestion is to move the Announcements forum to the top of the forum index on the main page. People are more likely to see it there.

And I note that ibiblio have renamed the folder as per Barry's request. I'm surprised that everything has to be reloaded. Don't they have backups?

I asked them about a backup, and was surprised when they responded that they don't have any backup at all, not for the distros section anyway.

That's wacked! (as my daughter says), perhaps a new main Puppy repository?
One to bring it all together... Maybe funded with foundation money?
After all, it can't cost too much to host a setup these days with all the competition.
