How to change Pupsave file's password in 32-bitXenialPup7.5?

#1 Post by petracus »

Hi,

I'm start using Puppy Linux from a pendrive and i'm absolutely amazed.
The question is, how i can modify the password of the pupsave file? Or, can I create a new pupsave (with my actual settings) but with another password! so that it can be used by other users with different passwords for the pupsave file
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Puppy Land!

We always need to know what specific Puppy version you are asking about?????
They are all slightly different.

This information clears up a lot of possible info we may
need:

Thanks in advance.

I've installed XenialPup 7.5 32 bits into a usb drive (pendrive).

I create the pupsave after changes at first boot.

My drive is fat32 formatted.

Another thing that happens to me is that the keyboard and usb mouse (same as other computer) do not work on another computer, only when start x11, on the command line it works. I have noticed that xorg.conf is not present in the second computer (a 2007 iMac).

Regards.

To just make a new save that uses a different password.

In a terminal

Code: Select all

shutdownconfig
press enter

This runs the save options and makes a new pupsave.

Run this for as many times you want to make another pupsave.

Note:
Very important.
Give each pupsave, you make, a specific name, so you can tell them apart.

However, it will make an empty pupsave, because the real original save is being used and everything is using it.

This new save will be used at bootup when you select to use it, but Xenialpup will boot as it first did.
No settings set or added programs.
So, it will have to be setup fresh and saved into at shutdown.

To make the new pupsave have what is in the original pupsave.

In rox file manager.
Navigate to the original pupsave location.
Left click on the pupsave to open it.

Open a new Rox window.
Navigate to the new pupsave.
Left click on it to open.

Now with 2 Rox windows open.
One showing original save contents.
One showing new save contents.

Copy contents from original save into new save.

If you have multiple saves.
When Xenialpup boots, a selection list will pop up.
Choose the save to use.

Note:
Any changes or additions, when using a specific pupsave. That specific pupsave, will only have them.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Thanks for the reply.

I get this error when I am going to create the pupsave with "shutdownconfig":

Save this log somewhere and close this window to continue...

Command successful.
Device savefile already exists.
Command failed with code 17: Device savefile already exists.
mke2fs -v -t ext4 -m 0 -E nodiscard -F /dev/mapper/savefile
mke2fs 1.42.13 (17-May-2015)
/dev/mapper/savefile is mounted; will not make a filesystem here!
e2fsck 1.42.13 (17-May-2015)
/dev/mapper/savefile is mounted.
e2fsck: Cannot continue, aborting.

The name I have given the new pupsave is different from the old one, then, the process creates the new file, but it fails when are creating the filesystem.

Regards.

The only way to tell what you did wrong.
Tell us what you do at each step of shutdownconfig process.
You see this?
You do what?

Ok, here is the full process:

1) Load the system (with my start pupsave, the previous i normal use with password)
2) Open terminal, type shutdownconfig
3) A yellow popup ask me to save (first shutdown). Click save.
4) Select administrator
5) Select continue to choose available storage
6) Show my storages, select sdb1 (the same storage i boot, my pendrive, there are 2892M free). It is the recommended storage.
7) Select Encrypt with LUKS
8) Type password
9) Select 1gb as the size of the save file
10) Type pupsave name (testpupsave)
11) Yes, Save
12) Creating xenialpupsave_luks-testpupsave.4fs in sdb1, please wait
13) Terminal shows 1073741824 bytes (1,1 GB, 1,0 GiB) copied, 93,8342 s, 11,4 MB/s
14) Terminal shows Creating filesystem ext4 in xenialpupsavve_lukks-testpupsave.4fs...
15) Popup windows: Unable to create filesystem
16) Popup the log i put previously
17) Terminal shows multiple same text: device-mapper: remove ioctl on savefile failed: Device or resource busy
18) Finaly, in terminal: Device savefile is still in use.

I have a screenshots of all if you want.

Regards.

Thanks!
You seem to be correctly doing the steps.

Nothing with computers is ever simple!

Have no other programs running.
Just booted to a working desktop.
Just have shutdownconfig as only program running.
10) Type pupsave name (testpupsave)
Try not using pupsave in the name you give it.
Just to see what happens.
name it test.

Xenialpup 7.5 has an update installer to provide updates and bug fixes.
Quickpet icon on desktop.
Quickpet->Info->Xenialpup updates
Could be something that will help.
After doing this. Good idea to reboot, so new stuff is now in the save and now being used.

Hi!
No luck.

Already have the update.

Type the command at start and choose a new pupsave name. Same result.

I can create a new pupsave by launching pupy in ram mode, like a first boot.

It would be the same?

I have been researching the cryptsetup command and I have managed to change the password of my pupsave file from with this command!:

cryptsetup luksChangeKey /route to your pupsave file

For example:

cryptsetup luksChageKey /mnt/sdb1/xenialpupsave_luks-xxxxxx.4fs

Once entered, it asks you for the old password and then for the new one.

Best regards!

Yes.
That also uses shutdownconfig.
But other shutdown process scripts are controlling it.

My install of Xenialpup 7.5 with all updates.
Running shutdownconfig works with no problem.
The extra save I made is named:
xenialpupsave_luks-test.4fs

Hi!

I try again but make the new pupsave without password.

It works!

Then, the problem is the password (in my case).

petracus,
you may want to look at using the ChLuksPwd-0.1.0.pet provided here:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=117234.
You could use it for assigning a separate password to 'cloned' pupsave(s), for a number of different users.
