What is the tiny dot under the taskbar for ?

#1 Post by lotech »

I am just curiously about the use of the tiny square dot at the low right of screen, you need to move the taskbar up to see it, I click on it nothing happened seems like a comestic flaw, but it reminds me 'The Net' movie :)

i've wondered this for some time. it's clearly a *cough*"feature" of xwin, it's there in jwm (which seems to cover it with the taskbar) and in other wm's (which for the cosmetic flaw, do not always)

From /root/.xinitrc, here is what it says:

#0.9.8 sync cut-buffers and clipboard. only useful for older apps
#such as rxvt that use the cut-buffers...
/usr/bin/autocutsel &
#...disadvantage of this is it creates a little square bottom-right of screen.

yes, for some functions of X a program needs a window, even if it is almost invisible.
I once wrote a tool, that sets "struts", that are borders on your desktop.
So a newly opened window will not cover a taskbar for example.

I only got it working by creating a window, and moving it outside the visible area.
Without that window, the desktop could not be controlled.

This is the reason, why Puppybasic has the on first sight "useless" function xwin_createsimplewindow().

lotech -- they are trying to cover up the truth, which is that it is a portal to another dimension accessible only by puppy developers ...
