PostPosted: Fri 22 May 2020, 13:59    Post subject:  Torrent Downloads Predicament [SOLVED]

Hi community

Having a bit of struggle here. It concerns Puppy Linux and large torrent downloads. I have set up Bionic Pup 8.0 64bit for daily use. I can almost ditch my OS on the host machine which was the plan in the first place: To only use Puppy on a machine with no OS. which is kind of the point with Puppy, right?

For now the only reason why I'd fire up y laptop's OS is for downloading large files with Bit Torrent. Transmission is my weapon of choice.
So, in the past downloading large files with puppy caused my memory to be flooded and froze the entire OS. I was like "yeah of course you run from memory so it will down to memory".

Here's my set up:
* Bionic runs from USB stick, save file is on the host hardware, personal storage indicates almost 1TB of free space.

* An external 1TB Seagate is hooked up into the laptop Puppy is using.

So, what I'd like to do is to make Transmisson put downloaded files on either disks but I cannot find a way to do that.

Is there anyone who could help me out here or tell me it just can't be done due to how Puppy is structured?

Thank you in advance. Cool

There is an option in transmission where to save the downloaded file.
Are you using transmission-gtk ?

I'm not sure. I am using Transmisson that comes with Bionic Pup 8.0. Going to check the PPM whether or not it's -gtk. All I can say is that this Transmisson does not give me the option to store files on either external disk (besides puppy) or on the disk of the host (without using the save-file I suppose).

EDIT: Yes, it's Transmission-gtk according to the PPM.

hi bullpup,

you need to set the download folder in transmission settings to somewhere outside the save ... like /mnt/home/download or /mnt/sda1/download

I hope not to confuse, as I do not use torrent.

But I bet you, bullpup that you have to mount your external drives 1rst. Then only after you have tested that the drives can be access is when you execute the application you want.

Yes once mounted, you may see the drive. Some times you even need to manually specify its mounted location. Usually at /mnt or /media

Good morning 666philb and enrique and thank you for your replies. Smile

None of your suggestions worked. Both Transmission and Uget won't let me set any location outside the "file system" of Puppy. Drives are mounted and accessible. I CAN create a new folder but only INSIDE Puppy.

Unfortunately. Sad But that's okay, it won't let me turn my back on Puppy Wink

Transmission does for me.

Transmission->edit->Preferences->Downloading->Save to Location:
In the drop down selection choose other...
Navigate to a location as suggested to choose it.

This is how I got sdb7, as a option to select. That is what I have as save to location.

For these locations.
/mnt/home/download or /mnt/sda1/download
You probably need to first make that download directory at those locations using Rox file manager or using Transmissions create folder.

Hi bigpup. Thank you for the suggestions.

Alas, also this didn't work. I've created a download folder @ sdb1 (my external drive) as you specified but still Transmission refuses to list it. Even when I choose "other location" it brings me back to the "root" or "computer" directory and refuses to go beyond that.

I have checked the permissions on the external drive and all the right boxes are checked
When I launch ROX file manager it ONLY shows the directories of the OS.
In Transmission when I choose "other locations" it takes me back to the Puppy OS directories completely ignoring all (other) mounted drives.
Only when I'd click on the sdb1 icon on the desktop I can open the external drive.

This is driving me crazy Very Happy Very Happy

EDIT: When I open Partview it lists ALL mounted drives INCLUDING the external drive I want to use AND the drive of the host hardware. So how can I make those show up in Transmisson?

Problem solving, this is how we learn Very Happy

I am using Transmission that is in Bionicpup64 8.0

So, you should be seeing what I see.

Can you attach an image of what you see when you: Transmission->edit->Preferences->Downloading->Save to Location:
In the drop down selection choose other...

Menu->Graphic should have some program to make images.
Bionicpup64 8.0 has Take a Shot.

Note:
The Transmission file navigation selection window.
Double left click to select and go to that selected location.

As a cross reference, dwnld this torrent client to /tmp -- rt-clk and hit UExtract.

Go inside, fire the "tixati" binary and see if you're able to select your external drive as its dwnld folder.

If you CAN, confirm so we can be one step closer to resolving your dilemma.

This seems very strange.
If you created a folder on sdb1, it should be mounted.

I presume you are running as root and not spot?

Please post results of
Code:
df- h
from a terminal.
Also post results of
Code:
ls -la /mnt
