9.0.1 CUPS - no pdf-writer in backend

#41 Post by davids45 »

G'day 666philb,

Made a frugal of 64fossapup9.0.1 but also added the "binned" ydrv from 9.0 - shame to waste most of its useful applications which work in 9.0.1. Chromium and kodi didn't but I have other options for these.

Only niggle so far is CUPS pdf-writer - seems to be missing from the backend directory so CUPS PDF is not right yet.
I copied what looked the missing file from a 64BionicPup but that didn't fix the PDF print situation.
CUPS is OK with an added paper printer (our networked Epson WF-2510).

Portable browsers and wine seem fine (posting from Iron-portable now).

Adding my own sfs apps one by one at the moment to check for any lib files missing, and will make a single sfs of these apps for future FossaPups and maybe combine this into either its adrv or ydrv - which is the better to add other sfs into?

When you upload an updated iso, would it be any easier on you to just upload whichever drv_ was altered from the previous version? Or would this be just a bit too messy?

Thanks for keeping me occupied in isolation.

David S.

I see the same error message but ignored it and never tested pdf-writer.

Hello 666philb
Thanks for this. I have done a manual frugal of 901 with your kernel.

The only peculiarity so far is that, at idle, my Athlon 3000G never gets to the lowest p-state.

With "watch -n 5 sensors" in a terminal the voltage settles at 906 mV

As a matter of routine I had already removed the things I don't need from /root/startup and /etc/xdg/autostart

With my 5.6.6 kernel sensors settles at 669mV which two p-states lower.
Maybe my kernel lacks support for a particular service that is running by default.

Question: With all of the Puppy files in one directory, is there a way to stop fdrv from loading? My kernel already has the firmware in the zdrv. Your firmware seems OK anyway, so it didn't matter.

screensaver?

901 doesn't seem to include a screen saver?

Simply rename fdrv and reboot.

It's not as simple as that...!
If I rename the file then I need and fdrv= boot parameter like the zdrv= for the menu entry that boots with 666philb's kernel. I tried that but it didn't work.

My kernel has the firmware in zdrv so it doesn't need the fdrv although it appears to be harmless if it has both.

An fdrv=none boot parameter would be simpler.

Installed Fossapup64 9.01 mostly to check my Slimjet 26.0.3.0 (chrome 80 based) SFS. I have had page load failures in peebees upupEF series but not in upupEE or any of the slackware based LxPups. It went very very well. To whit:

Grub4Dos Frugal install to SSD on a second generation i5 based laptop circa 2012 (Fujitsu S761). The atheros9k wireless card was recognized without the fdrv so the stub fdrv was substituted. Thanks, ozsouth.

Usual timezone and SNS connection setup OK.
Data partition set to mount on boot using Pmount and symlinks for spot (for Slimjet), downloads, sylpheed, clipboard profiles set up.
Dmesg clean and early microcode load working.
glxgears video speed good for this HW at 6800FPS.
Touchpad settings adjusted with psynclient OK
Capslock disabled with Mouse/Keyboard settings OK.
Gatotray disabled (not working), pmcputemp 0.63 installed from pet and working correctly.
CPU_freq driver and governor checked. intel_pstate OK on the i5s
Quick soundcheck seems fine, WAV, OGG, AU, MP3, M4A.
PCManFM 1.3.1 installed from PPM, set up with bookmarks etc and set as the default FM OK.
Lxterminal installed from PPM OK.
Sylpheed 3.7.0 installed from PPM OK.
Slimjet 64b 26.0.3.0 SFS loaded, libffi needed so it was added to the SFS along with the slackware rqd libs. Runs OK.
64b portable redshift installed from pet OK.
JWM tray set up, clock font and format adjusted. OK
window and GTK themes changed, no JWM blowups.
Printer (Brother HL-2170 laserprinter installed using CUPS. Firewall turned off, networked printer found. HP PCL 4/5 laserprinter drivers used, that Brother emulates PCL well. Usual line in /etc/hosts for the brother printer. Test page printed correctly.

Can't think of what else, pretty much my complete initial pup setup to get to a pup I can use as a daily...

I haven't broken it  actually quite like it. The browser test was a sucess. The Slimjet has no page load problems at all in this pup. Might be a mixed library isue in the EF pup -just a guess.

30 April PM Update: A day or two as the daily, no hitches, no glitches. Lidsuspends ok, youtube sound and video good under this Slimjet,, retrovol works well on this hardware and the default controls are correct. I generally do set 'speaker' to 100% to get enough volume on these laptops.

Thanks much,

Pups currently in kennel :D Older LxPupSc and X-slacko-4.4 for my users; LxPupSc, LxPupSc64 and upupEF for me. All good pups indeed, and all running savefiles for look'n'feel only. Browsers, etc. solely from SFS.

Rename it, but do it this way.
Add bak. to the front of the name.
bak.fdrv_fossapup64_9.0.1.sfs
If the name starts with fdrv it is going to try and load it.
If it starts with bak. that is nothing to use in the boot process.
Plus, bak. tells you that is a backup of the real fdrv file.
Remove bak. from name and back to working fdrv.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

I installed fossapup to usb drive using frugalpup20. I installed Vivaldi browser using 01micko's utility. Initial boot and setup went well but no sound was noted.

Works:

camera
touchpad
guest mouse
rtl2800usb external network controller
audio

Built in Wifi rtl8821ce does not work.

I had an issue with sound. Initially no sound at all. I used the setup utility to make some adjustments and was able to get a successful sound test. However I could not get sound in the browser with youtube videos (codecs are installed).

I continued to "mess around" with the sound settings and finally enabled sound for this card. I have had no audio issues in Dpupbuster64 or Bionicpup64 which has been my daily driver for a long time now. Audio sets up automatically I can't say exactly what I did to get the sound working due to the way I went about it. I seem to recall having the same issue with easypup.

EDIT Having used the audio system for a bit I noticed that the volume is stuck on one setting (high). It is possible to move the slider up and down but volume level does not decrease. It does mute with the slider bar being positioned just above the halfway point.

@Tiredpup - I could make you an rtl8821ce driver, but they are kernel specific. Since 5.6.7 is unlikely to be the final production kernel
it would only be useful short-term & requires huge kernel, kernel-sources & devx to be sourced.
Alternatively, my 5.4.27 kernel (use the ubuntu version) has rtl8821ce support built in.

I think that the rtl8821ce driver issue is going to be present throughout the life of this laptop. As you pointed out building a driver now would be a short term solution. I will continue to use an external device for the time being.

Thank you very much for offering to build a driver. :D

Sound Issue:

In a previous post above this one, I documented an audio card issue. I mentioned after trying various different configurations it started working. After using it for a while last night I noted that the sound is at one volume level (high) and will not vary with the use of the slide bar in retrovol.

Lowering the slide bar to a point just above halfway causes sound to mute.

I haven't had a chance to work on this piece of the audio issue yet. I will see if I can make progress with that today.

Update:

I can change volume levels manually by opening alsamixer in a terminal window. So it seems that Retrovol is not doing anything at all. Notice the tray icon in the screenshot below. Volume is at 100%.

@TiredPup
Concerning your sound problem, I wonder if you can get into Setup-Sound-Sound Card
Wizard and make sure only one so-called sound card is checked?

Just a idea.

A small size png (192X139) was used as a icon for pupsysinfo. It automatically is
resized down to a max icon side dimension of 48

I did as you instructed and just swapped them everything works great. Thank you very much.

@artstown:

I checked on that first thing as I had to attempt to properly configure the card to get it working. Your thought was good though because initially both cards were selected.
