Used latest version with my HP Pavillion DV6000 and it was very snappy but I see check dependencies is still not fixed in woofCE:( - otherwise nice effort and all works.

Do you have an article on this. I would like to understand the claim that they "legally" locked themselves into using systemd.

+4 iso generated using the delta. md5sum checked and correct. Booted on the Sandy Bridge based Fujitsu S761 both as a pristine Grub4Dos install to SSD and as an update of +3. Clean boot, all system checks ok, good SSD/mem throughput, sound ok, good video FPS, and excellent idle CPU and mem use; both on the pristine and the update. My usual collection of SFS, symlinks to the data partition, and pcmanfm integration all working correctly on the update. Mitigation as expected for a 32b kernel on this hardware:

Code: Select all

1tf:Mitigation: PTE Inversion
mds:Vulnerable: Clear CPU buffers attempted, no microcode; SMT vulnerable
meltdown:Vulnerable
spec_store_bypass:Vulnerable
swapgs barriers and __user pointer sanitization
spectre_v2:Mitigation: Full generic retpoline, STIBP: disabled, RSB filling
Thanks for supporting this critter,
Pups currently in kennel :D Older LxPupSc and X-slacko-4.4 for my users; LxPupSc, LxPupSc64 and upupEF for me. All good pups indeed, and all running savefiles for look'n'feel only. Browsers, etc. solely from SFS.

Back to me favorite. md5sum correct, generated the iso using the delta. +5 installed both as a pristine boot, basic setup with SNS network, timezone, touchpad, panel and clock setup etc. Symlinks and mount at boot added for the Data partition, Savefile created. Reboot clean and Slimjet SFS and pcmanfm from repo added in, wallpaper, default apps, and a few jwm colors tweaked. All system and dmesg checks good, video FPS stellar for the Fujitsu i5 based laptop at 9100 FPS. memory and SDD throughput unchanged from +4, excellent. CD and DVD both autoplay correctly. Pmusic perfect OOTB, gnome-mplayer needed the usual tweaks of sound output parameters to match the hardware and use codecs. That, as usual, cleared up some dropouts heard initially. All good so far. Printing not yet set up in the fresh save.

Also run as an update from +4 with the std. savefile scrub. All good there also.

Thanks,

UPupEF - Eoan-Focal

#31 Post by peebee »

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa is due to be released 23-April-2020

As we all know, some 32-bit components needed by Puppy are no longer provided in Focal Fossa

What I've decided to do is make a build which uses a combination of Eoan Ermine and Focal Fossa components - to be known as UPupEF.

A Release Candidate version which will most likely change as we get to 23 April is:
715727b53f8ae95cd4f1273d2becbc8c upupef-20.04+RC4-uefi.iso

RC kernel is 4.14.173 32-bit PAE

upupee and upupef: libgutenprint-common is missing. In upupee my Brother laser printer works with the original 32 bit drivers from brother site and with foomatic ppd. In upupef cups is broken: the 32 bit drivers from brother site are not able to print the test page but I'm able to print a pdf file. The foomatic ppd driver does not work: "filter failed". Foomatic drivers are not shown in printer setup.
upupee: updating the lists of packages in ppm breaks ppm. Are the repositories still available?

EDIT: I have solved printing in uefpup installing ghostscript-9.15.pet:

The origin is probably this:

OK here. md5 checked. Installed mostly to quickly check printing. Pristine Grub4Dos install on my usual 2nd gen i5 based Fujitsu S761. SNS connection and local time etc. set up. CUPS then used to set up my Brother HL-2170W laserprinter. With firewall turned off, networked printer found and installed as an HP Laserjet Series PCL 6 CUPS printer (it emulates that and a generic PDF laser printer, sometimes I use one sometimes the other). No Brother drivers installed at all. The following line added to the /etc/hosts file as usual:

192.168.10.31 BRN008077ECF5D2

Up and printing. I have an HP officejet 4500 also but I only install that on LxPupSc mostly for the scanning capability as the bloated HPLIC irks me.

No other quirks seen as yet. The screen comes up dimmed but the brightness buttons work correctly so not a problem. I have a line or two I add to rc.local when needed but later maybe. Lower panel set up and resized ok, no PCManFm, rightclecks, SlimJet as yet...

Update: links to data partition set up and SlimJet Version 25.0.9.0 run-as-spot from SFS loaded and run and Sylpheed checked and it is also running correctly.

Cheers,

In the printer choice dialog box, I choose "HP Laserjet Series PCL 6 CUPS printer", not any of the gutenprint driver options. Over time, that has been the cleanest setup for this laserprinter. When I first bought it a few yrs ago I installed it using the brother drivers but saw no difference in printing and that was a lot more trouble. I'll also try setting it up using the generic laserprinter option in a minute or two.

Update: Using PCL 4/5, not 6. Sorry, trying out lots of drivers...

I don't see a generic non-color pdf or postscript laserjet in this version of CUPS so I can't try that. However the following all work, testpages printed, all done in pristine RC2:

HP LaserJet Series PCL 4/5
Generic PCL 5 LF Printer - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.3.1 (grayscale)
Brother HL-2250DN - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.3.1 (grayscale, 2-sided printing)

HP Laserjet Series PCL 6 CUPS printer talks to the printer but prints out an "incorrect driver" flag

Ran RC2 a bit more, bouncing back and forth between the latest upupee and it on the Fujitsu S761. The only problem I've had using EF is some chrome page load 'aw snaps' in EF I don't have in EE. Seems to occur on image rich or gis database type pages though chrome error messages don't help much in sorting it. Doesn't crash Slimjet, can continue to load other pages OK. Occurs using either Slimjet 25.0.9.0 (chrome 78 based) or Slimjet 26.0.2.0 (chrome 80 based). Both (run-as-spot from SFS) show the behavior. No errors in EE, the pageloads in EF. The correct github ffmpegs are loaded in both. Tis an RC2 -and chrome- to be sure, probably a library thing. We'll just follow it for now.

Cheers,
