Subject description: xz decompression support on Puppy? |
|
There's a survey question on the Pale Moon forum, by Moonchild himself, https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=23273 asking about switching to .xz archives to reduce Pale Moon's tarball size. "Puppy Linux" is a mixed bag of various versions. Is anybody currently running Pale Moon on a Puppy version that has no support for xz? Before answering "yes", check if it's available, but not currently installed on your system. This survey is obviously limited to Puppies modern enough to run Pale Moon.

The oldest puppy where palemoon 28 runs is wary but it needs an unofficial glibc tweak and LC_ALL=C. Wary has not native xz compression capability but the package of palemoon for wary can easily be built with racy (which is derived from wary with new kernel and new xorg) for example: racy can manage xz compression. More recent puppies can manage xz compression as I know. So no problems for me.

I write this from a PM 28.7.2 in tahrpup64 6.0.6, and xz version 5.1.0alpha is present here.

I just booted Slacko Puppy 5.3 off of a USB stick on a refurbished Lenovo laptop. "xz --help" shows a help screen, so I know it exists there. I believe it's the oldest "official" Puppy that supports Pale Moon 28.x. Slacko 5.4 is currently installed on the laptop hard drive.

Subject description: Pale Moon 28.8.0 released |
|
The latest version has been released (28.8.0). See http://www.palemoon.org/releasenotes.shtml for change list. For those who download tarballs direct from http://linux.palemoon.org/download/mainline/ note that they're now "xz" format. "tar" is generic enough that it can figure out file type if you have the appropriate unarchiver on your system. E.g. for palemoon-28.8.0.linux-i686.tar.xz you can simply command line...
tar xf pale*.xz
Note that wildcards are capable of unarchiving multiple files, if they're present in the directory.

Pale Moon has built in update with v28.0 onward.
So, simply use internal update to get v28.8.0
Just did it.

@ All:-
Is it just me....or is the page scrolling in Palemoon much smoother (and somewhat faster now) than it was previously?
Prior to today's update to 28.8.0, scrolling on the big old Compaq was always a touch jerky (and somewhat erratic, speed-wise). Now, it seems much smoother than before.....and somewhat faster, too. Far more like Firefox now!
I'm not complaining. If this is a change from Moonchild and the Palemoon team, it's a very welcome one. I like it!
Mike.

Scrolling was one of the big problems in the early days of Pale Moon.
They have settings for it in preferences, but it always seemed to have issues.
I too have noticed it getting much better.
Maybe they finally figured it out!

All Puppys with kernel version 3 and newer can handle xz compression.

Apparently, valid values are 0 and 1 (I guess any value apart from 0 is taken as "1"). Just my two cents

Palemoon 28.8.0 in lupu-528 Subject description: Making an old pup work again |
|
I just got watchdogs palemoon-28.8.0-glibc219tweak.pet to work in lupu-528.
First I copied these libs from Racy-5.5libgdk-x11-2.0.so.0
libglib-2.0.so.0
libpangocairo-1.0.so.0
libpangoft2-1.0.so.0 Then I booted lupu-528.005 and installed palemoon-28.8.0-glibc219tweak.pet mentioned above.
Then I placed the copied libs in /usr/lib/palemoon/glibc219/lib and started palemoon. And here I am posting from it.

Great achievement! Thanks! I have no more my old lupu install but I think you did a beautiful present to many lupu fans.

Nice one, jrb..!
I've been meaning to investigate how to do that for quite some time. Up until now I've only had Palemoon running from a chroot 'jail', alongside Iron 69 and FF68esr.....but having it running natively is, of course, tons better.....
Cheers, mate! (And that is a nice 'Xmas' prezzie, too. Second one from the forum today, in fact.. !)
Mike.

I tried this in lupu2016 and got a GdkPixBuf error, which someone else who installed Komodo fixed by installing gdkpixbuf2, which lupu2016 does not have in package manager.
