hi quenyan,

i've found that the brightness function keys work with some kernels and not with others, depending on the hardware.

so either try switching kernels using quickpet.... or checkout the arch wiki to manually change brightness https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Backlight

hi cattledog

not sure if there's a way to convert a normal save to an encrypted save.
maybe just start afresh and choose encrypted save this time

hi linuxcbon,

i've updated the steam.pet (now called steam-bionic.pet) and uploaded to the repo. The new pet fixes this i think and also brings in python3 when installed, allowing the installing and running of windows only titles.

I've also added the nvidia 440 driver to the repo .

both of these are available now in the PPM (once updated) and will be added to quickpet in the next few days once mirrored

Also tested the Bionic64-v8 CE with a freshly complied kernel 5.3.13_X86_64 and it is also performing well

Bionicpup64 8.0
Frugal + save folder
Fully updated using Quikpet->Info->Bionicpup updates.

Getflash is messing up again. :roll:
Quikpet->Info->Bionicpup updates says it did this:
10/11/2019 getflash updated ... Argolance
However, Getflash is not working.
Menu->Internet->Getflash seems to do nothing.

There is a tweaked version talked about here:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 80#1042780
That one works for me.

Have to say, bionic pup 64 pretty good light weight virtualbox vm install, using the saved to disc install option, under 1GB, works better than the often suggested ubuntu.

In this game of musiclal urls by adobe, version 1.9 of getflash currently works ok on
this and several other pups. Looks like there's another whole year of this nonsense
before flash player is no more.

Hello rameshiyer
Puppy does not have Ubuntu user management or Ubuntu package management. So postinst scripts that expect them to be present won't work as intended.
I have not seen any problems with packages from the Ubuntu repos, but third party packages sometimes have problems.
For example, on Ubuntu, tvheadend creates an ACL that requires a Ubuntu login. To use tvheadend on Puppy it is necessary to stop the program and run it with the -C parameter that allows you to create a new profile with whatever access control you want.
You need to look at the postinst script to see what it is trying to do.

hi rameshiyer,

this is probably because you are either running puppy as a limited user (fido) or trying to install the .deb from inside the /root/Spot folder. if the second just move the .deb into /root before installing.

Hi, Phil/all.

I'm a fairly late adopter where Bionicpup64 is concerned. I did try one of the betas last year - I think it was 7.9.3? - but dropped it a bit later to concentrate on Xenialpup64 at that time. AppImage support was, er....'patchy', is probably the best description (I use a lot of these), but I'm happy to report this appears to be 'sorted', now.

However, I do have an 'issue' with the PPM? Despite updating multiple times, it simply will not install anything. Keeps coming up with an error message, saying that "xxxxxxx is not available. Try updating databases.....new versions may be available", etc.

Now, this is a long old thread, and even some of our now available search engines aren't able to home in on specific posts.....and I simply don't have the time to read through the whole thing. Is this a 'known' issue.....or does it look like a bad download? If it is, I'm going to be really, really annoyed, since aside from that, I now have everything set-up to my liking, and all is working sweetly.

Is this something that got 'patched', or 'fixed' at some point? I can't even install from 'Quickpet'; I keep getting the same old error messages.....and I know these are available from the package listings at Ibiblio. I can install by downloading the package, then manually installing, however.....

Cheers.

@Mike Walsh:

Your issue seems familiar to me so I updated the package manager and installed a 3 programs, one from the gnome family, one from the kde family of apps and one from bionic 64 native repo.

Everything worked perfectly.

I have had some experiences in the past where I tried to install packages using the puppy ppm and received a "package not found" warning similar to the one you are reporting. The option to cancel or retry was presented and I selected retry which resulted in a successful installation.

I cannot remember if this experience was exclusive to Bionicpup64 or if I had the same experience with some of the other pups though.

Mike Walsh,

What you are describing about PPM and Quickpet is common results of just a bad download of the Bionicpup64 8.0 iso and or a bad install to whatever storage device being used.

I would try a fresh new download of the iso and a fresh clean install.
Make sure you download the iso to a location that has not had the file system fragmented by being used by Windows.

A clean format of the partition, is always good, if you can do that.

Quickpet for sure should just work.
Well, Quickpet->Info->Bionicpup updates will fix a few bugs with a few programs offered in Quickpet.

Hi Mike Walsh,

i wonder if the firewall is blocking your PPM. another thing it might be is that you've overwritten bionicpups 'wget' as that would break both the PPM & quickpet.

FYI: bionicpup auto updates the the PPM 90 seconds after boot up so the package unavailable message shouldn't happen like in other pups. a caveat to this is if you install a package when it's in the process of updating. still your problem points to wget.

Hello, Phil.

Mm. Well, just as an experiment, I tried using wget to directly download a package from the bionic64 pet_packages repo at Ibiblio. This is how it went:-

Code: Select all

root# wget http://www.distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pet_packages-bionic64/teamviewer_14.1-x86_64.pet
--2019-12-12 01:59:44--  http://www.distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pet_packages-bionic64/teamviewer_14.1-x86_64.pet

Connecting to www.distro.ibiblio.org (www.distro.ibiblio.org)|92.242.132.16|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Length: unspecified [text/html]
Saving to: ‘teamviewer_14.1-x86_64.pet’

teamviewer_14.1-x86     [ <=>                ]    1010  --.-KB/s    in 0s

2019-12-12 01:59:44 (8.82 MB/s) - ‘teamviewer_14.1-x86_64.pet’ saved [1010]

root#
I got a .pet package in /root.....of exactly 1 KB. The TeamViewer package should be some 21-odd MB in size.

Rt-clk->Properties describes it as an

'HTML document, ASCII text, with very long lines, with no line terminators'.

What d'you reckon? According to 'Properties' for /usr/bin/wget, it hasn't been overwritten or modified since it was created on the 25th Feb 2019, @ 10:49.03.....

???? How might the firewall be blocking wget? I'm still tryin' to figure that one out.....

--------------------------------------

EDIT:- Downloading it - by clicking on it in Iron - downloads it perfectly. And clicking on it installs it.....

Curiously, upon clicking the .pet to install it, pkg opens in the terminal in the background, and proceeds to resolve, download, and install a shed-load of dependencies from the main Ubuntu repos. All of which install perfectly. And damn me if TeamViewer 14 doesn't actually open up and proceed to run; first time I've ever even seen the frickin' thing..! :D

Well done for that! Gawd, I hate Qt5..... (*grrr....*)

Image

I may have got there by a somewhat 'circuitous' route.....but I did arrive. That'll do me. No need for a re-install, I don't think.... Cheers, Phil!
