Jake, having said that, d'you think the portable Windows version of 7Zip would handle it, running under WINE? I have this portable functioning well in most Puppies; I've never had much luck with the Linux p7zip, for some reason.....

I see no reason why shouldn't it.
But don't you have unrar on your system already?
Here you can download pre-built binaries (i386 & amd64) or source code and build it yourself (just load devx.sfs and simple make will do the job): https://www.rarlab.com/rar_add.htm
PeaZip should also handle it, since it comes with 7z included.

Some people don't like that its closed source.

It's not closed source, just written in Pascal. Wink

Well, that's answered my previous question.

The portable Windows version of '7Zip 16.04' handled it beautifully. Everything is unzipped, and all is present & correct.....all 471 MB of it!

Even the 'ReadMe.txt' has unpacked properly. I think I was using UExtract 3.36 for this, Jake; I know you've added quite a few new items in the last couple of releases, haven't you? I've got 3.40 installed in 2 or 3 Pups, but I simply haven't gotten around to swapping the entire kennels over just yet.....

Anyways; thanks for the hint. It nudged me in the right direction...

Okay.

Now; I've got as far as getting this to fire up in Precise 571. If, however, you choose to go 'Single Player', I get an error message, which tells me I need to 're-install' the '1.41 point release', because some additional .pk3 files are missing.

These are:-

sp_pak1.pk3
sp_pak2.pk3
sp_pak3.pk3
sp_pak4.pk3

.....so I shall need to have a scout around & see if I can locate 'em, I guess. No rest for the wicked..! Laughing

I can extract that archive with UExtract. It's not a ZIP, though, it's renamed RAR.
In my case 7z kicks in and extracts it:
Code:
Can not open the file as [zip] archive
The file is open as [Rar] archive

The extracted stuff weights 470M.
Maybe you have older version of p7zip? Mine's 16.02 (full version with 7z binary).
Anyway, try renaming it to *.rar. Should help if you have unrar installed.

Hi @SFS many thanx for the research )
Please try the game then. (with HD textures). It deserves that.

BTW I also tried with
Code:
7z x file
but I unpacked it with many zero files. I am on tuhrpup and 7z ver is 9.20

Well, UExtract is only as good as the backend tools it uses. Cool

Even if the engine is free, the original resources (maps, textures, etc.) are probably still copyrighted and non-free.

Go to the location of your existing original installation, go into the “Main” folder and copy the following files over to your ioRTCW “main” folder: pak0.pk3, sp_pak1.pk3 sp_pak2.pk3 sp_pak3.pk3. This is the game date for the single player mod.

Yeah, played it years ago, good game.

Ok, I can reproduce it. It happens when Rar.so (or similarily named) lib is missing.
Should be present in /usr/lib(64)/p7zip/Codecs/ dir.
There must be something wrong with p7zip packages you guys are using.

Greetings!

@ takenp:-

That, young man, is uncommonly generous of you. Thank you so much!

Castle Wolfenstein's single-player mode is now running very sweetly in 571. I'm not a regular gamer, not by a long chalk, so no joysticks/gamepads/whatever it is they use these days; it's mouse and keyboard for me. In some ways this is rather like Assault Cube.....or Doom. That kinda thing.

I had a mate who used to spend hours & hours with Doom & Quake on his PS1 back in the late 90s. Me, I could never see the attraction - I preferred the 'driver' games, if I indulged at all - but mainly I had better things to do with my spare time. Didn't have a lot in those days....

As a full-time carer, I have days when it's all go, and days when I have a lot of spare time to kill.....so it's a case of re-visiting things that my contemporaries were so fascinated by, back in the day. I like the odd game of chess, or Mahjongg; sometimes, I'll give these first-person shooters a look. As with all of 'em, it's mainly a case of learning your way around the controls.....'cos they're different for every single one.

I've got one Windows 'portable' game from PortableApps.com, which will run under WINE. It's called 'Xonotic', and it's a BIG one; there's over 1 GB of it in total, and in all honesty, it's just too much for my elderly hardware. I've also got the 'portable' Windows 'Assault Cube', which runs just as well as the native Linux version. This seems relatively kind to an elderly Athlon 64 dual-core X2; CPU cycles are quite reasonable, really.....

But you won't catch me shelling out for computer games. I'm on a modest income, and every penny is spoken for, so.....if I play anything like this at all, it's gotta be free, I'm afraid! Smile Embarassed

But Zonotik has 32/64 native binaries as well. No need to use wine, dude! )
