Darn..

try this after deleting the failed download..

Code: Select all

wget https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/woof-CE-noarch/blob/master/pet_packages-noarch/fix_pi_overscan-0.2-rpi_all.pet?raw=true -O fix_pi_overscan-0.2-rpi_all.pet
after that click the pet, look in the menu, click the program and you'll see the screeny.. (or similar)

Success! Used the above ... :D

I used the middle image settings but needed to use the third to stretch the image (100 pixels in all directions seemed to do it ...)

@ 01micko
Is Fatdog for Pi 4 going to be 64 bit, I hope so, I will be in if Pi 4 is 64 bit.
Also curious, does anybody with a Pi 4 already know if the Pi 4 has turbo boost for the CPU, it makes a hell of a difference with pi 3.

Here is Pi explaining away why they are sticking with 32 bit.

Simon Long says:
We cannot avoid focussing on backwards compatibility; it may not matter to you, but it is massively important to us. There are 27 million Pis in the wild; I don’t have exact numbers to hand for how many of those are Pis 1, 2 and Zero, but it’s well over 10 million of them. As soon as we move to a 64-bit OS, those devices are orphaned, because we do not have the resource to maintain two separate forks of Raspbian. (Not to mention to handle the support requests we will get from the thousands of users who download the wrong version and find it doesn’t boot.)

No-one has yet managed to provide us with a convincing use-case for where a 64-bit OS actually provides a real, quantifiable benefit to end-users. 32-bit accesses the entire RAM of the 4GB Pi 4. 64-bit code is invariably larger than 32-bit code – compare the sizes of the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7; the 64-bit version is 30-40% larger. That’s a lot of extra download bandwidth for us, and for our users. A lot of 64-bit code actually runs slower than the 32-bit equivalent – because it’s larger, it takes longer to pull in from backing store. There are numerous costs attached to 64-bit – and we have yet to find a proven use-case where it actually offers any benefit whatsoever to the vast majority of our user base.

So no, this is not the ideal platform for the transition, or the time to make it. When (and if) we have a board that has more than 4GB of RAM – and that is likely to be a good few years off from today’s launch – we will look at 64-bit. But until then, the advantages of 32-bit – backwards compatibility, size, speed; of which backwards compatibility is easily the largest – vastly outweigh the putative advantages of a move to 64-bit at this point in time.

... best ask the Fatdog developers and team ... They are all house trained and friendly ... :D
Fatdog has always focussed on 64bit development ... :idea:

It can be done BUT as the CPU is already running hot it is not recommended without cooling ... :oops:

Easy fixed Lobster, at least I posted in the right thread.

Easy to fix the overheating problem, Copper
But not been able to see on ebay or amazon a copper sink 35-40 cm square, plenty of 'ram coolers' but nothing a bit bigger last time I looked on ebay, amazon.

@spotted

At this stage only 32 bit is supported, and I can't get this version to boot on my newly acquired pi 4 anyway ( :P ). Maybe devuan based on beowulf is needed but I have to wait until upstream has some success. Perhaps a base on debian may be appropriate but then the there are lots of work-arounds for systemd :x

@spotted,

Not a Pi owner myself but I saw your comment about overheating and wondered
whether anyone had ever used the Peltier effect for cooling chips.

Simply connect to 12V 5A+ power supply and you will see frost appear on the aluminum plate within a minute. This assembly comes with the best Peltier we could get, so it can get even colder than the stand-alone module we stock, but we think the price is worth it. Just sitting on our desk it got down to -3.6°C, nice and frosty!
Aye Caramba ... A CPU cooler and beer cooler maker project ... must be ideal for an Oz Operating system :D

Might it be easier to put the raspberry pi in the icecube section of one of those mini fridges (we used to have one) with cables going out through the door rubber sealer ...

I had a look at Devuan Ceres and before I deleted it all I tried the script on Ubuntu on my parked Odroid N2. Of course it didnt work, half a page of error messages, but I had to try it.
When you say
Maybe devuan based on beowulf is needed but I have to wait until upstream has some success.
do you mean you are waiting for Devuan to do an 'arm64' script for Ubuntu

ETP
Interesting concept, little bit x'ie for a $45 Pi.
A copper sink and fan twice as big as the CPU chip will be good enough for me when the time comes. There is a guy in the cnx thread above that has 2 ghz with a alloy sink and it looks to be only as big as the chip itself. Finding a copper sink is the bottleneck here.

some tips on preparing an SD card for img files using Puppy
(do not use MS Windows as it tries to assimilate Linux)

- balenaEtcher which is for installing img files (such as Noobs, Raspbian and Puppi Rasvuan) did not work for me from BionicPup. Time waster.
- format your SD card to Fat32 using Gparted
- use this info as a base

Excited to see micko is working on puppi raspbus (see next post)

Ah yes.. many thanks to Fred 8)

I have pi 4, 3, 0 (almost a countdown :roll: ) and a pi rack with all shelves populated.

raspbus (the next itreration?) is coming along and I'm also working in parallel on bringing raspup buster (woof-ce) up to date.

Typing on it now in midori GTK3. It's bounds ahead of the gtk2 version.

Hi 01micko and thanks for this rasvuan distro used in raspi 3B+. Devuan based is perfect for me!

The config.txt I use takes care of the overscan:

initramfs initrd.gz followkernel
ramfsfile=initrd.gz
ramfsaddr=-1
dtparam=audio=on
disable_overscan=1
force_turbo=1
dtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3d

Vivaldi is used at the moment, NetSurf is also possible.
Libreoffice seems to run OK, havent tested all parts yet.
I have two rather large Fat32 (vfat) partitions:

Filesystem Type 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/mmcblk0p1 vfat 13421056 216816 13204240 2% /initrd/mnt/pdrv
tmpfs tmpfs 473900 552 473348 1% /initrd/mnt/tmpfs
unionfs aufs 4112060 1303732 2791944 32% /
/dev/loop0 squashfs 181760 181760 0 100% /initrd/pup_ro2
/dev/loop1 squashfs 14336 14336 0 100% /initrd/pup_z
/dev/mmcblk0p2 vfat 17712128 4194368 13517760 24% /initrd/mnt/dev_save
/dev/loop2 ext4 4112060 1303732 2791944 32% /initrd/pup_rw
devtmpfs devtmpfs 341672 0 341672 0% /dev
shmfs tmpfs 227280 123136 104144 55% /dev/shm

Testing continues while having fun!

Hint: A 64bit devuan for rpi3B is available at
https://files.devuan.org/devuan_ascii/embedded/

Tack så mycket! /Olle

Hello Olle

Glad you are having fun with rasvuan :!:

At the moment development on rasvuan ascii is in hiatus while I concentrate on raspup buster but I have started initial development on rasvuan beowulf.

As spotted in earlier posts indicated, he is keen for a 64 bit version for the raspberry pi. I would have to support pi 3 and 4 I think but it should well be possible in one as raspup supports everything from pi zero to 4 in the one download.

All the best!

Just asking. Are you talking about Freds 'beowulf'
How much work is involved in doing a Fred for arm boards verses building a new puppy. Would a 'beowulf' work on other arm boards, I have 2 odroids sitting on the shelf. but I like my pi4 better, have it running at 2 ghz with passive cooling where as I cant get my odroid past 1.9 ghz
