Palemoon doesn't - Mike do you think this is an ffmpeg issue I updated ffmpeg from Shinobar as well as xine-lib and xine-ui they were all Shinobar updates here:
http://shinobar.server-on.net/puppy/pup4/opt/pets/

namely ffmpeg 20100408

and Xine-lib 1.1.19-full from that page with xine-ui .pet and it plays most of the mp4's I throw at it from mp4's downloaded by clipgrab.

Mm. I was thinking more along the lines of this one:-

3.2.2-static-i686.pet.

I've got several brace of newer static packages than this one, too, but for 431 you don't want to go ridiculously new, do you? Well, I don't think so.....bearing in mind that most of the other components are still pretty old, yes?

I know from experience that upgrading ffmpeg in many of my older Pups fixed a long-standing issue I'd had with audio reproduction ever since I switched from Ubuntu to Pup nearly 5 years ago. Playback was never the issue; audio recording was trouble-free in Ubuntu, but got really slow and 'treacly' after migrating to Puppy.....and this is the exact same hardware, which is what I couldn't work out. It wasn't until I tried one of Fred's 'Dogs' that the problem seemed to suddenly resolve itself, so I did some digging & un-earthed what was at the root of it all; ffmpeg itself.

Many Pups come with a really ancient, stripped-back version. Great for saving space, but I'll bet it's behind many other Puppians' audio issues, too.....not just mine. 3.2.2 is the one I've used with great success in most of 'em.

I'll be installing this myself, tomorrow, so it's up to you. Feel free to help yourself and do whatever you like with it.

-----------------------------

(Actually, thinking about it, I'm going to put that on hold for a wee while. This is the guy who's put all the 'static' builds of ffmpeg together.....John Van Sickle:-

https://www.johnvansickle.com/ffmpeg/

You might want to put one more build together if you can follow jrb's tutorial for doing a kernel swap in the older Pups:-

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=60180

.....since these are compiled for 2.6.32 upwards, and I believe 431 uses 2.6.30. I'm in Slacko 560 tonight, so I can't be arsed to switch over and check, I'm afraid! I'll do it tomorrow.)

I think 2.6.32 must have been some kind of a watershed, 'cos if you ever look in the 'Properties' of most binaries'n'stuff, it almost always seems to mention 'k2.6.32' down the bottom somewhere.

@ watchdog:-

Thanks a bunch for the chrooted Palemoon.

I installed Shino's SFS-load-2.4 .pet, loaded the SFS, and let it fire up the first time to create its profile. After I finally realised where that profile had been put (look in /cnt, idiot!), I opened it up, deleted the contents, then copied across the contents of the common profile I share between both 32- and 64-bit versions of my portable 28.6.1s.

Re-launched it, and.....everything's tickety-boo. Bookmarks, extensions, etc., all present & correct.....and working YouTube. Yay! :D

Thanks again, mi amigo. Cheers!

IIRC... the 2.6.32 watershed was for two reasons NETBOOKS (Intel ATOM), and Debian-6-Squeeze.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the ffmpeg .pet but you were right the 2.6.32 limit bit on the------------
so kind of stuck with Shinobar's efforts.

In the meantime I will put up one of Fred's You tube viewer .pets as this is one way some like tanker can view youtube with the built in mpv that it has.

Use xarchiver to unzip to a directory and run GTK-Youtube.CDE and enter your search and then either press play option or right click and chose play in terminal, there is also an option to download video.

Please read thread. Basically unzip and place it in hidden ./mozilla directory in root (you need to click eye icon in rox-filer to find it and place a shortcut to the desktop from that firefox directory.

So you are running it from /root/.mozilla/firefox

Hey Tanker,

May be an idea to remove updater files from seamonkey folder as it may try to update to gtk3 version which thankfully 4,31 Phoenix doesn't have.

They are in /usr/local/seamonkey - files are
update-settings,ini, updater and updater.ini - Seamonkey 2.46 works fine without them.

Darren:-

One little problem - well, a couple, in fact.

How d'you use this monitor calibration tool? On the old Compaq desktop, the desktop (in fact, the whole display, period) is too bright and 'washed-out' looking. I ca't really achieve acceptable results with my monitor's brightness & contrast controls, so there has to be another method for doing this.

The other problem concerns my external 3TB Seagate USB 3.0 drive. It runs thru a USB 3.0 adapter card in the PCI-e slot, and contains the majority of my data.....but 431 simply doesn't 'see' it. It doesn't even register; it's like it doesn't exist.

Any ideas as to what I can try?

Umm to be honest I'm a bit stumped on both questions cos I know modern Pups have calibration tools and 4.31 - I'm going to look at that.

As for the other problem - sorry I am genuinely stuck on that. Anyone have any ideas?
P.S. Now in 4.31 there is Monitor gamma Calibration in xorg wizard compared to modern Pups a little primitive - I am looking at third party or something another Pup has.

For a start I found Zarfy: works in 4.31 requires a script - used in EasyOS.
Also looking a Arander.

Of course other thing is a driver issue a link to more drivers:

Hi, Darren.

A few more for the collection; mostly from the 'pet-packages-4' repo at Ibiblio, and a fun one from me and Fred, using debs originally from Fred, to which I've added a couple of Menu entries to control things, and bundled everything together in a single .pet. Fred's .debs don't install by themselves (the PPM complains, and throws errors).....but 'petting' them seems to have worked nicely.

Leafpad - lightweight text editor:- http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pe ... 0.8.16.pet

Epdfview - lightweight PDF viewer:- http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pe ... -0.1.7.pet

.....which needs the 'poppler' package to get it running:- http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pe ... 0.10.4.pet

Xfburn - an alternative disc burner app. I was expecting this one to throw all sorts of errors (I've used it quite successfully in the past), so I was pleasantly surprised when it fired straight up without a murmur:- http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pe ... 1-i386.pet

And the 'fun' one - GIF4Desktop-AIO-noarch. This is what I use to get my wee 'running puppy' endlessly romping across my desktop..! It utilises the contents of Fred's 'gifondesktop' .deb, and the 'gtkdesklet' .deb (this permits the transparent backgrounds to work properly, so your image really looks like it's directly on top of your wallpaper, without any borders or frames to spoil things). To this little lot, I've added Menu entries, under Menu->Desktop, to stop & start the GIF image at any time. The 'Start' & 'Stop' scripts live in /root/my-applications/bin, with the 'Start' script sym-linked into /root/Startup for auto-run at boot time.

You'll get my 'running puppy' with the package, but it's very easy to use your own GIFs instead. The package creates a directory in /root (at /root/GifPic); this is where your desktop GIF image is located, so if you keep to this location it makes for minimal editing to change the image path. The only bits that need alteration are the first few lines of the 'GifStart' script in /root/my-applications/bin:-

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash

gif=/root/GifPic/running-dog-4_2.gif
x=+52
y=+534
timeout=0
To use your own animated GIF image, just change the /path/to/your/image in line 3. To change the position on the screen, just modify the 'x' & 'y' co-ordinates till it's where you want it. Easy-peasy!

@ Darren:-

....and another one for you..! Patriot's 'all-in-one' package of Avidemux 2.5.2, the lightweight video editor. This one, again, is statically compiled, contains absolutely everything required to work, and gives you the choice, when you fire it up, of either GTK+ or Qt4 interfaces. It's another one of those packages that just 'runs' in every Pup you throw it at..... :D

Hi Darry. A good effort with this one (for which thanks) but just a couple of notes;

i/ Seamonkey 2.46 updated to 2.49.3 of its own accord and then crashed and wouldn't run again. I'd turn off automatic updates by default. Palemoon 27.9.4 runs well.

ii/ So far, I can't get libreoffice to run on it (I've tried the 4.3.4 pet with jre 6.26).

iii/Midnight commander works as long as you use the earlier version (4.6.1 with the gpm 1.20.11 pet). For file extraction from zips though, go with ROX-filer and XArchiver.

iv/No osmo with this one?

v/ Xcalc seems to be your main calculator. It looks more colourful with this skin;

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 13&t=83837

Thanks once again,

CP .
