Rasvuan Alpha - for raspi 2,3,3+ Subject description: Built with Devuan Ascii armhf packages |
|
This is the first release of Rasvuan for Raspberry Pi 2, 3 and 3+ variants. Sorry wont support Pi 1 or 0 because Devuan repo builds to target armv7; not armv6.
Download:
Rasvuan-888.tar
devx
Checksums:
a9196244ad075210dd371c8ed54734b9 devx.sfs

Installation:
[*] get a micro sd card at least 512MB (2 or 4 GB is good) and make the first partition FAT32 of size 300MB. The remainder of the card format to Linux ext2, ext3, ext4, f2fs or whatever. Use GParted or your favourite CLI tools to format.
[*]Mount the first partition and copy the contents of the Rasvuan tarball to it.
If you have an internal card reader it will probably show up at /mnt/mmcblk0p1 (yours may vary) so do this:
Code: | tar xvf rasvuan-888.tar -C /mnt/mmcblk0p1 |
If you have an external card reader it will show up as USB something like /mnt/sdc1
You can untar the tarball in place and drag and drop the files in rox (or other FM) to the card.
No responsibility accepted if you pick the wrong drive!
[*] poke the micro sd into the pi and boot it up. Everything should be fairly familiar except package management. No PPM (well its there but wont work). Use apt
Code: | apt update
apt install whatever-program |
Here is my blog post.
Fixing the display
Many HDMI TVs have problems with the display being too big or too small. On the first partition there is a text file called config.txt which you probably will have to edit because the settings are for my TV. They call this "overscan" and "underscan".
Click THIS LINK for some remedies
It's mostly trial and error and the only way to tell is by rebooting but once that file is edited the values stick so won't be lost.
I will probably make a gui for this at some stage to make it easier.
There will be lots of bugs I'm sure.
Known bugs:
[*] unmounting icon doesn't work, just right click and unmount the drive
[*]apt complains sometimes so just run apt --fix-broken install
[*]keyboard layout is broken but I have an xmodmap hack in there to make it usable for now
[*]other browsers refuse to run, dunno why. I think devuan arm doesn't get much love
[*]lots of useless menu entries and double entries
I don't know how far I'll go with this because I'm always tempted by slackware and their -curent arm is hard float so suits the raspberry.
Enjoy!

How exciting @Mick.
I picked up my Rpi 4 yesterday. Sadly I am away again and won't have access to the 3b+.
Do you think it is worth trying on the Rpi4? My feeling is it won't work as the processor is a different version?
I can wait ...

Haha!
I made a HUGE breakthrough today.
I couldn't get any mainstream stock browsers to work including Firefox and Chromium, however I easily got Qupzilla to work and the download was only 30 M (including the necessary QT5 libs) so I think that will be the default browser in the next iteration.
That isn't the breakthrough though as Qupzilla is a bit limited in it's capabilities.
Enter Vivaldi! Works like a charm. Yes, yes I know it is proprietary but the devs over there do respect privacy (even though it is based on chromium / blink engine). I happen to know a dev there, Ruari Ødegaard (a fellow Norweigian ziggy ) formerly an Opera dev and a keen slacker (a.k.a. 'slackware fanatic') and he assures me that they de-googlify Vivaldi as much as possible. That said, I would never put proprietary software as a default in any puppy I build but I will repackage and put it in the repo.. somehow.
I've tried many a time to get Vivaldi to work in armhf, including raspup (build from woof via woodenshoe-wi) and fatdog-arm by jamesbond in the raspi 3 and an odroid -u3. Always failed. I dunno if it was user error, distro error or package error but there were errors!
Finally, a decent browser is available for raspi!
Too late for me to elaborate right now but I may get time tomorrow after work. In the meantime, drool over the teaser image .. (if you are so inclined ) ..

Great work ...
When you said 'Stock Browser', I thought you had become a bwanker Should have known better ... and now back to the drooling
I have temporarily borked/bricked my rpi 4 - I edited the 'bios'/boot/config.txt and no access to it ... though I have a cunning plan ...
OK gotta drool 🤤

Norway is a tiny country (especially when measured in population), but from my home at the exact geographical midpoint (true), there is still 1000 km to Vivaldi's headquarter in Oslo...
I use Vivaldi in Slacko, and it is a reeally good browser. Hereby recommended!

....Talking of Vivaldi ... and your and @zigbert recommendations ...
It was not available on Raspbian BUT
I went to the Vivaldi website, downloaded the 32 bit ARM tar
and ... it works OK on Rpi 4
Update:
Ublock Origin
and Privacy Badger
are recommended as Chrome Extensions (currently available for Vivaldi usage too)
In September 2019 issue 299 of PC-PRO
I am getting used to Vivaldi
ARM your Puppy
With Raspberry cuteness
