Hi, Todd,

I have been using 2.14lite as my main Linux since it came out. Very pleased, but now I have a question.The Puppy-Software-Installer no longer downloads the packages. I assumed that this was because of MU's hosting difficulties, but just a few minutes I tried the new 2.15ce, and was amazed to see its PSI download all the packages. Maybe they are using a different repository, but thought I would first ask you if there was an easy way to get 2.14lite to do similar. Or maybe I broke something ;-)

EDIT : Oops, sorry, Todd. I just noted that 2.14lite doesn't come with PSI. Forgot I had added it later. So I shouldn't be asking you. On the other hand, if you know the answer . . . :-)

Following the "Oops" in my previous message, I went back to 2.13lite as a test. PSI showed its usual long list of software, but when I refreshed it there were only the four or so items left, same as 2.14lite has. So I guess it's the repository problem that Mark had (has?). No point in bothering him with that again. Yes, I know there's an alternate address now to download dotpups from, but it's not descriptive and convenient like psi. Must be patient :-)

Have been using litepup to roll my own, just thought I would pass on some tips.

Installed mplayer108.pup It would not work it needed a library, this library was part of the elive sound system esd something or other (I should keep notes sorry) I found the correct .pup under multimedia.

Installed Gaim, would not connect to MSN due to missing ssl libraries tried a variety of ways to get them non worked. Then on my main pc I found I had saved a .pup that todd used to have on his site with the missing libraries. Sorry I have no place to host it but pm me and I will email it to you.

Using the network wizard I install ndiswrapper drivers for my wireless nic and all goes good but It does not save the settings and I have to reinstall every boot. The normal version of puppy 2.14 seem to save the driver.

Other than those minor challenges it's great.

Starting with Puppy 2.13, Barry put all of the drivers in the squash file "zdrv_214.sfs". I have a version of Litepup without the "zdrv". I would try booting from this image and see if it allows the driver for your wireless NIC to save properly.

Hi Todd. Just tested litepup 2.14 in qemu. After installing your firefox pup.
I realized, that firefoy can't work, because a couple off libs are missing..
(ldd /usr/local/firefox/firefox-bin)

Do you have a fix.pup to install the missing libs..?

ok. Missing libs are in /usr/local/firefox
But were not found from dynamic linker.

Solution:
edit /etc/ld.so.conf
insert a line to point to the directory where the libs are:
/usr/local/firefox
save.
execute ldconfig once.

Than I found out, that defaultbrowser didn't work..

Solution:
right click on desktop icon. file browser. select open as text.
edit the line with:
exec firefox "$@"
to read:
exec /usr/local/firefox/firefox "$@"

Bit embarassed to ask... but...

I am recently new to Puppy2.14, and think it's great on my laptop (256MB RAM). I am looking to install a minimalist Puppy-based setup on a separate 64MB RAM laptop for a friend, with just Opera, AbiWord, mtpaint, java, flash, MUT, ROX, rxvt terminal, Pfind, a text editor and a pdf viewer. I may also need Gxine and LinNeighbourhood, but that will depend on how much these apps slow the OS down. I appreciate I will need to install all of these manually onto Lite (except AbiWord and mtpaint), but presume that installer packages exist somewhere for all these apps. Or perhaps I could just copy directories from my current installation?

My friend will, however, still need some of the Setup stuff, like Network Wizard, Xorg/Xvesa wizard, and wonder whether these have also been stripped out of PuppyLite? If so, I think it would remove the user-friendliness that attracted me to Puppy (from XP) would be lost, and perhaps he would be better off with a base Puppy, accepting that he may have a few installed apps he doesn't want (particularly SeaMonkey).

Any help?

The wizards are all still there, you can use petget and the dotpups to put what you want in, then remaster your new cd.

ugm,

i have a laptop using LitePup 2.14 with 64mb -- ThinkPad 560x -- that's been setup fairly close to what you describe.

right now i'm outside, listening to an old Little Feat concert via Opera 9.02 w/ flash. i've also installed Ghostview, GParted, Gxine and GAIM. the first two work fine, but though i get video -- and as you can tell by the fact i'm listening to a concert, my sound card is recognized and works -- i've yet to get any audio with either Gxine or GAIM.

fwiw, i'm a relative Linux neophyte and so far only the sound has been an issue for me. excepting for the Java --i don't believe 64mb is enough memory, so i didn't even try -- and possible hardware issues, i don't think you'll have many problems.

btw, you will want/need a swapfile or swap partition. though i prolly should have made it for less -- with that little ram you don't want too large a swap partition because it will beat up your hard drive, physically -- i used Gparted to resize and then make a swap partition of 128mb. now i'm pondering making it smaller.
