Browser extensions

#1 Post by Colonel Panic »

Has anyone found any extensions for the browsers they use which significantly enhance their online experience, or make better use of limited system resources?

I'll kick off with this one; I've found an extension called OneTab, which is available for both Chromium and Firefox and which converts all the tabs you have open into a list. Then you can just open them as and when you want.

Here's what its authors say about it;

"OneTab lets you easily export and import your tabs as a list of URLs. You can also create a web page from your list of tabs, so that you can easily share your tabs with other people, other computers, or with your smartphone or tablet.

You can drag and drop tabs in your OneTab list to reorder them. You can also hold down the Ctrl or Cmd key while restoring tabs and they will remain in your OneTab list (meaning you can use OneTab as a way of quickly launching a set of commonly used tabs). OneTab supports retina displays. Note that OneTab is designed to leave in place any 'pinned' tabs you have."

https://www.one-tab.com/

It's also free of charge and its creators don't ask for a donation. Well worth looking at IMO.

'clear fields' adds a clear search and address bar button. useful when pasting with the middle mouse button.

'wheelclear' is similar but rolling the mouse wheel clears the search/address field.

'open with' this is really useful on low spec computers for streaming youtube, when you right click on a link you can set it up to open it in your default media player. you can also set right clicks to open in any other application.

i use palemoon and unfortunately firefox have now removed all legacy addons from their site, and so i've just been keeping my old addon .xpi files to use across installs. but today whilst looking for links to old versions of the addons that i posted above i found this .... https://github.com/JustOff/ca-archive

I use with palemoon28 Tab Mix Plus to load one tab at a time when opening a folder of bookmarks. I have not found an extension of this kind for seamonkey 2.49.4: I use a workaround in latest seamonkey moving temporarily resolv.conf so all tabs in a folder open in error and then restoring resolv.conf I can reload tab by tab.

Hi, Colonel Panic.

I guess my best ones would have to be, in order:-

-uBlock Origin. Still the best lightweight ad-blocker out there.

-LastPass. Simply the easiest-to-use password manager there is!

-Save to Google Drive. Fred's GoogleDrive GUI app lets you upload/download from the desktop, but, for me (as a long-term Chrome user) this is a must in the browser itself. I believe there's even a version of this available for the Mozilla-based browsers, which does work with the new-style Firefox.....but it's unofficial, i.e., not sanctioned by Mozilla themselves.

-VideoDownloaderProfessional. 'Does what it says on the tin'; totally fuss-free, too.

And last (but not least).....Xodo PDF Reader/Editor. Indispensable. There is a way you can set-up Adobe's Reader 9 to automatically open PDF documents selected in the browser, but it is SO much hassle to do so, I just can't be arsed wi' it..!

My "two-penn'orth", FWIW.

Thanks to everyone who's posted here for their suggestions! I shall have a look at all of these, but having an older computer I'm particularly interested in any that help me save system resources such as that one of Phil's which enables me to stream a Youtube video with a media player, watchdog's one for loading a folder of bookmarks one at at a time, or Mike's one for downloading videos.

Brilliant find, Phil. I'll archive a copy of this for anybody who might want it.

Cheers!

Now, then. I've hit a snag at the first hurdle.

You can't install the .xpi file (I've just tried this in Watchdog's 45.9.0.ESR release - which is covered, apparently), because (wait for it, wait for it) the .xpi file itself is 'unsigned'. So it refuses to install.....

Bear in mind I'm not an habitual FF user, so I am not at all familiar with the multitude of 'tweaking' you can perform in about:config. Any ideas, anyone?

Interesting to note this "Classics" thingy offers to list versions of a given add-on.

The latest and those compatible with the FF PaleMoon's been built upon.

A quick test tells me one not targeted for the correct FF version may NOT be fully compliant.

A good article in PCMag magazine, which describes eighteen useful extensions for Firefox Quantum (including One Tab, which I've mentioned);

https://www.pcmag.com/feature/359099/th ... ensions/18

I'd also mention Tabliss, which displays an often pretty picture whenever you open a new tab.

Thanks to all for this most useful thread.

I’m looking forward to exploring Phil’s GitHub link in detail as soon as I can, but right now I’m fulminating over serious omissions from the latest Palemoon versions. (I’m on 28.4.1 presently).

The old Seamonkey gave me the power to block animations, and I’ve had ‘em blocked for nigh on ten years (Mike’s running dog avatar is really beautiful, but I come here to read, not to gawp, and I find all animations intensely distracting and irritating).

It also allowed me to block images from specific sites. This was very useful, because the irrelevant stock images with which newsmedia editors now compulsively plaster news items add hugely to the data usage for which I have to pay.

The latest Palemoon offers neither. A noble dev has provided a ‘stop’ button addon which I have downloaded, but it is no substitute for the fuller control which Seamonkey offered.

Any suggestions as to how any better control may be regained via addons or otherwise would be much appreciated.

Good idea! You put it there, so you'll probably remember it when you're looking for this thread, and it's not off-topic or confusing. :)

Seconded.

Re. Palemoon - further to my earlier post, I’m very grateful for help received from Semme and perdido (in another thread) .... however there seem to be some problems now with Palemoon (PM) extensions being junked by the PM devs.

To fix my PM animations problem, I’ve had to go into about:config and change the animations line from ‘normal’ to ‘none’. OK, but it seems that there used to be a ‘toggle animations’ option which is not available anymore.

More seriously, the PM devs decided to junk NoScript last May, which led to extensive heated correspondence on the PM forum threads and elsewhere, e.g -

https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1363 ... iscussion/

Hmmm ... I’ve been happy with NoScript for many years in SeaMonkey. I can still download the last NoScript version (?5.3*) suitable for PM. but PM now stubbornly refuses to install it.

I see from my trawl of the PM forum that outraged PM afficionados have proposed:

- drop back to an earlier version of PM
- drop back to a (much) earlier version of NoScript
- use uMatrix as an alternative
- dump PM for good, consider e.g. WaterFox as alternative.

All very sad, no?

If you have a page with a lot of images on it, and want to save them all but don't want to go to the trouble of clicking on them all individually and then saving them, there's a browser extension called Download All Images;

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefo ... extension/

There is another way of doing the same thing, an online application called Image Cyborg;

If (like me!) anyone has trouble wasting time on certain sites when they've got things to get on with, there's an interesting add-on called deprocrastination which I'm trying out now. It allows you to set a length of time for which you won't be able to access any of a list of sites which you nominate;

https://www.deprocrastination.co/home

I just came across this firefox extension that really helps use less RAM when multiple tabs open (especially when heavy pages in the tabs). It works by 'hibernating' non-selected tabs. Seems to save a ton of RAM:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... leep-mode/

Review from a Windows site, but same addon...:

https://www.thewindowsclub.com/hibernat ... e-browsers

I expect it only works in recent firefox - I don't know, I haven't looked into it further.
