XFileExplorer 1.19.2 (August 05, 2008)

#1 Post by MU »

UPDATE further down:

Homepage:
http://roland65.free.fr/xfe/

Great filemanager with a tree like the Windows Explorer, and 2 file-panes for easy drag&drop to copy files.
With a right-click, you can easily extract or create archives.
I did not include the slow imageviewer and texteditors and rpm-viewer.

Now with Unicode support and icon-themes.

UPDATE: version 1.19.2:
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/File_Managers/xfe-1.19.2.pet
mirror:
http://puppyfiles.ca/dotpupsde/dotpups/ ... 1.19.2.pet

It requires the Fox-library 1.6.23:

Puppy 4:
http://dotpups.de/puppy4/dotpups/Multim ... 1.6.31.pet
mirror:
http://puppyfiles.ca/dotpupsde/puppy4/d ... 1.6.31.pet

Puppy 3 and older:
http://puppyfiles.org/dotpupsde/dotpups ... Vector.pup
mirror:
http://puppyfiles.ca/dotpupsde/dotpups/ ... Vector.pup

This library from Vector-Linux supports smooth fonts.

This dotpup also includes:
- shutterbug (create screenshots)
- Adie (Texteditor)
- Fox-calculator

Adie is able to load/save binary files, and the calculator is very easy to use, though it has several functions.

I also made a developer pack of the library for people, who want to compile using this lib:
http://puppyfiles.org/dotpupsde/dotpups ... -devel.pup (1 MB). This is not required to run XFE!
But it has no support for smooth fonts, so you'd better get the one from Vector.

Mark

Hi Mark! Salut!

Last night I was playing around with my VectorLinux 5.8 install (which I've since lost but that's another story) and guess what they have? The very latest Fox engine along with an updated XFE (0.98.1 I believe the number is now).

Have you had the chance to see this yet Mark? It is simply incredible! One thing that always put me off about using XFE was the very bad font support. I have bad eyesight quite often with my illness (comes & goes) so the fonts were difficult to read. This is why I stopped using XFE even though I loved its many features.

Now? It has system font support (or so it seemed to me) and the entire interface looked so much better Mark! This better font support comes by way of the Fox engine it seems because I installed that and XFE, and yet the fonts in my old Adie in VL5.8 also changed! Smile

Unfortunately I installed the new Xfce 4.4.0 that they have for VL5.8 and this, since it requires an older HAL from the one of my Freerock Gnome, it downgraded my HAL---and completely broke my KDE. No matter what I did to fix KDE, re-install, upgrade, etc., it remained broken. So I wiped the partition. Doesn't bother me---my Puppy partition is what matters! Wink

But when I saw the new XFE/Fox I said, "I HAVE to tell Mark this in case he doesn't know!" Any chance for we in Puppy to have an update? If I say please a lot of times maybe? LOL! Very Happy

Sorry for bothering you with this long pri. msg. Mark. I hope you are in good health and that work is going well for you!

Take care mon ami! Porte-toi bien, okie?

Amicalement,

-jimmi-/Eyes-Only

I will answer in the Forum, jimmi.

It attracted my attention already from a message in my german board:

http://f24.parsimony.net/cgi-bin/topic- ... mmer=71270

I just hesitated to compile it, because I had to compile the Fox-libs, too.
If you know a download-location for the vector-packages, please let us know.

I think very important is the new support for Unicode :)
This is required for international fonts and compatibility for Rox 2.5.

With binary slackware/Vector packages, we easily could create dotpups.
You even might be able to install them with gslapt:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=11929

Thanks for your message :)
I answer in the forum, as I must sleep now.
Maybe someone is quicker than me in making a Dotpup :P

Thanks Mark for your very prompt reply! :) In fact, I got it just as I was going to bed, but this "Li'l Indian" needs all the "beauty sleep" he can get. ;) LOL!

The VectorLinux packages of Foxlib and XFE can be downloaded from their forum where there's a direct link to it now in the testing repo. The forum link to both packages is:

http://www.vectorlinux.com/forum2/index ... pic=2161.0

I'm not sure how long though programmes and projects remain in the testing repository? Maybe someone else knows? I just used the system a lot when I had it but never went much to their forums as I spend most of my time here or at MozillaZine when not emailing. ;)

Their repo though is at this link: http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-5.8/ Once there you'll see all the various sub-directories. The one problem is that they use LZMA (.tlz) compression for all of their packages now instead of using the usual .tgz format. However, if someone were to upgrade their base Xarchiver in Puppy from the 0.2.6 to VL5.8's newer 0.4.6 (I think it is?) that one has been recompiled to do 7zip and LZMA packages. :)

As for me recompiling XFE/foxlibs for Puppy: I couldn't do it. The last project I did was K-Meleon 0.8.4 and after that I gave up on all programming, most beta-testing, Gecko theming, and the like, because of my illnesses were just getting to be too much. Time to let others do it while I enjoy my remaining few years playing with the computer after working with them for 20 years, eh? ;) C'est la geurre mon ami, est aussi c'est la morte...

I hope all is going well for you Mark at work and that your health is good. You know Mark (or maybe you don't realise it?) that when I came to Puppy now almost a year ago you helped me a lot when answering the few questions I had, and when coming here I always looked for your posts above others as they taught me so much (no offense intended nor meant to others as now you all teach me so much!), and throughout this year your software compiles have brought me so much pleasure to my everyday life. I wish to thank you now, here openly on this forum.

And I'd like to thank all of you, for all that I've learnt throughout this year. Freely you've given to me of your time, knowledge, effort, and goodwill. You are ALL a very special group of people who make an ideal "just work", and beautifully so! Thank you all for your dedication to Puppy---and friendship to me.

Amicalement,

compiled it in Puppy, see first message :)
I compiled the Fox-libs without support for OpenGL and libtiff.
I know no application that needs them, so I prefered to reduce the dependencies.
But as I run it in Muppy, that has many libraries, I cannot guarantee that it will work in a small standard-puppy.

If you encounter problems, please run "xfe" in a consolewindow, and report errors you get.

The configuration now is stored in /root/.xfe/xferc.

I just recognized, that my Fox-lib did not support smoothed fonts :?

So I now added the libs from Vector-Linux, too.
With these, even large fonts look very smooth.

Please test, if they work in a standard-Puppy.
If they need more libs, I could add them tomorrow, or try to recompile my Fox-libs with other settings.

Must sleep now ;)

THANK YOU!! :)

Downloaded and installed Mark---and I wanted to say "Thank you!!!" as once again you've really made my day here! I downloaded the above files but took the vector-lib pack instead. Then I uninstalled my 88-XFE from you (plus the apps and foxlibs associated with it) and installed the above.

Next I started XFE 0.98.2 in the terminal first of all to check for any dependency issues like you had asked. I'm running 2.14 with very little modifications except in eye-candy and codecs for movies/sound. So when it came up and ran without one single error from the terminal that's a really great sign! Once again Mark you've done an outstanding job here---and themes included! I love the Gnome one the best! :)

You've really made me happy Mark and I know that you went out of your way to compile this because you're a very busy person these days and don't have a lot of time. So this is a great gift for me personally. Merci mille fois mon ami!

I just hope that others will try downloading this to see how nicely XFE has changed now and I think it will make a really big difference for those coming over from Windows to Linux. With the excellent font rendering and nice icons, plus the options, I'll be using this more than Emelfm2 now I think. :)

Again Mark, so many thanks for the great gift and a job well done! So very much appreciated!

Amicalement mon ami! mfg,

very good news, so I can remove the Fox-Lib I had compiled myself.

XFE is the first program I install in a new Linux/Puppy :)

I'm glad you're so happy.

Yeah, busy, but at moment it is quite ok.
I have some good tasks and quickly achieve results.
Like this the time goes by very quick.
Today and tomorrow I'M coding a logfile-analyzer for Oracle Systems in Perl, very nice job. I really love Perl :)

Best wishes to the west of Canada my friend, Mark

Hi Again Mark!

Actually, I'm in the north-eastern most part of the USA in Maine, where Trapster lives (though I don't know where he lives). As a matter of fact, I live just about 150km or less south of the Quebec border. This is the "Old Abenaki Confederation Territory" back in the days of when the French "discovered" and settled the region, and later became known as part of "Acadia" (along with New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, along with the Upper Gaspe). Acadians (alt: "Akadian") still live here in the area despite it having fallen to the English and many Acadian peoples being moved to the state of Louisiana where they subsequently became known as the shortened name of "Cajun".

I myself am not Akadien (I'm half Abenaki, the remainder being Irish and European French), however, though it is my Mother Tongue---along with English---as I was adopted into an Akadien-speaking family and this is how it became my language.

And now you have the very brief history of my general area Mark. ;)

By the way: I do believe that Xfe was my first File Manager installed by me into Linux as well---which happened to have been your .pup of course! hehe!

A la prochaine mon ami!

Thanks a lot for compiling xfe, it run fine on plain puppy 2.14. Finally a good file manager for puppy.

But there're some quirks that keep bugging me. First, I can't drag and drop file into another application, like dropping movie file into gxine icon on desktop. Second xfe can't handle archive file (like zip and rar) properly. Xfe doing nothing everytime I click on zip file. I like to open it with xarchive but there's no xarchive on xfe's application association list.

If you have time, please fix the above problem to make xfe the best file manager on puppy :)

regards,

to extract zips:
right-click the file -> extract here.
To add a program to the "open with"-list:
right-click -> open with -> enter the name.
Next time it should be in that list again.

To remove a program from that list, edit /root/.xfe/xferc

For Rar-archives, maybe rar is required:
http://puppyfiles.org/dotpupsde/dotpups ... r-2.80.pup

Did not check that yet.

thanks, for the solution :)

until file drag n drop getting fixed, file association is the only way to go.
btw, unrar 3.40 is included by default on puppy 2.14.

Thanks a lot,

I get a seg fault with it in Puppy 4 (same as the slackware package). I am using the fox dotpet from the rezound link that I compiled. Your 0.98 package works fine though. Maybe I'll try it tomorrow with a fresh boot and no pupsave.

to try to find out what might crash it, you can try:

gdb xfe
run
backtrace

This might give a hint on the lib that causes the crash.
Thanks again to Enrico, the Geany-developer for this helpfull tip :)

Thanks for that. It'll come in handy. It looks like maybe /usr/X11R7/lib/libXft.so.2 is the problem. Could you post the version you've got?

/usr/X11R7/lib/libXft.so.2.1.2

And please type:
echo $LD_PRELOAD

This should be empty I think.
In older versions it was set for Gtk1 applications in /etc/profile.
Maybe Dingo has such an entry again?
Some apps would not work with that.

#this is for antialiased fonts in gtk1 apps...
#LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libgdkxft.so
#export LD_PRELOAD

The problem was I didn't have xft enabled in my build of libFOX. I was able to compile xfe-0.99 just fine but 1.00 & 1.04 wouldn't compile. I re-compiled libFOX-1.6.31 like this:

--prefix=/usr --build=i486-t2-linux-gnu --with-xft --enable-release --enable-cups --enable-shared --disable-static

Rezound still works fine using the newly compiled fox libs. I'll repackage libFOX and make a package for xfe-1.04 for Puppy 4. I'll post all that in my fox thread.

new PET:
version 1.19.2.
Includes languagefiles and iconthemes.
Also requires Libfox 1.6.x.

New: bugfixes, gradient buttons, and such a buttonbar as in Gtk filedialogs for quick navigation. More menu-icons for easier access to options.

Size: 1.3 MB.
