Enlarging Save-File

Dear Friends,
Hope this day finds you well.

Both now and for future use. I need instructions on "How To" enlarge my Save-File. Which will also help expand my knowledge base for Puppy/Linux.

Recently when trying to perform certain steps like with libgtk-3>choosing the first of (3) options and Do it.. Before I could even tick the Do it tab I would get a Free space error. (see sample attachment) a restart did nothing.
Received a similar notice when trying to install the latest version of Palemoon.

Any help would be appreciated.

Any setting you select, will add to the size of the save file, by the amount you choose.

Only save file size limit is if the save file is on a fat32 formatted partition.
fat32 has a file size max limit of 4GB.

Bigpup, don't I recall this was a problem with a couple or three of the more recent Pups? Wasn't it found to be related to the 'freememapplet' that sits in the notification area?

I'm pretty sure a .pet was published to 'fix' the problem.....but I haven't a clue where to find it. Is your memory any better than mine?

I had the exact same error that nanosecond reported just two days ago.
I was trying to download something from PPM. I was on the Puduan-7 that
I'm re-mastering. (I'm writing this message from it now, actually.)

@Mike_Walsh: if you (or anyone!) know(s) where to find that de-bugged
freemem_applet, I'd be most grateful for an URL.

@nanosecond: About palemoon -- May I suggest that you download it
from their site and not via the PPM?

If you download it from their site, you can install it externally to your pup-
save, on /mnt/home. How to do it is explained rather nicely on their site.

Whereas using the PPM, it will be installed internally (inside the pupsave),
and it will gobble up a huge amount of space in your pupsave.

An screenshot of gparted showed that Tahrpup was being booted from a 13.9 Gb USB-Stick, formatted Linux Ext3, with 11.3 Gbs space available.

Files Nanosecond downloaded have remained in /root/Downloads. Files in /root always take up RAM. At first blush, under those circumstances it might appear that so much RAM is being used just to store files that there is little RAM left to perform other operations. I had suggested that he Move files out of /root/Downloads to /mnt/home. But he reports "I can't move them either way and get any results. The Option MOVE is not offered I assume cause the Drive is locked?" Emphasis supplied.

I was going to suggest that rather than Move, the process be broken down:
(0) Browse to /root/.cache and delete ALL files.
(1) Copy one file from /root/Downloads to /mnt/home. Copy is less RAM-intensive than Move.
(2) Delete the copied file from /root/Downloads.
(3) Execute a Save. This would still take a long time until more than a minimal amount of usable RAM existed.
(4) Reboot.
(5) Copy another file from /root/Downloads to /mnt/home.
(6) Repeat steps 2 thru 4 until all files have been moved.
(7) Delay moving /root/Downloads, /root/.mozilla, /root/.moonchild productions and /root/.cache to /mnt/home and symlinking them back until Saving has become responsive.

But, I don't know why the option to Move isn't even offered. If his USB-Stick is Locked, he also won't be able to copy. I also don't know how to 'unlock' it.

I would like to know how much RAM this computer has: Suggest nanosecond run Menu>System>PupSys-Info, click the Sys-Specs Tab, then Base Report, then post the information starting with "Memory Allocation" and ending with that reported on the "Actual Free" RAM line.

Perhaps I should note that according to the gparted screenshot, nanosecond's computer is a Toshiba MK2546GS. And that I hate Toshibas.

Besides all of the above.

Seems to be using Tahrpup 6.0.5

When PPM was being improved and modified this issue came up about a space eroor.

PPM 2 should not have any issues like this.

Hello all.

You can lock a flashcard, not a thumb drive.
Flashcards have a tiny slider on the side to do so.

Would the OP be using a flashcard he forgot to unlock?
