@ALL,
Found a bug in BionicDog:
The Firefox included can update itself, but after updating to the latest version it doesn't start.
This can be solved by installing "libatomic1" package:

Code: Select all

apt-get install libatomic1
Or install from Synaptic.

Added to Changes and fixes ( 3) )
EDIT: Already earlier mentioned Here that the included wex (screencast application) doesn't work, to fix, upgrade wex.
added also to "Changes and fixes" ( 4) )

BionicDog boot error

#742 Post by Ether »

Hi Ether,
I see it's already answered (thanks rcrsn51)
Can't understand, btw, (looking at your screenshot) that it's looking for wheezy .sgn file Question Rolling Eyes
EDIT: Should be "bionic-i486.sgn", maybe you included the wrong initrd1.xz in your install ?
I made the suggested changes to the menu.lst item and it booted error-free. Took it for a short test drive and it works very well. Thanks for doing this.

I think I know now why I got the wheezy message:

1) I already had a /casper folder in hd(0,2) from years ago

2) So I extracted the bionicdog iso to /bionic/casper/ (see attached screenshot)

3) I followed the "Examples-boot-codes.txt" instructions exactly as worded:
For example if folder /casper is inside folder /bionic you need to use from=/bionic/
...but apparently additional changes are needed as you guys explained (maybe that's obvious to developers but not me).

So when I booted, it must have looked in the /casper folder instead of the /bionic/casper folder.

I've decided to try weaning myself from Windows OS on my desktop machine. The old versions are no longer safe to use, and the new ones are just too bloated for my slow internet connection and low-end hardware.

So thanks for continuing the "dog" project. Great work.

Oh, one more thing: I added bionicdog iso to my YUMI multi-boot USB and it won't boot from there. I don't need a resolution for that, but I thought I should report it.

Is this a known bug, and is there a fix?

how to search all 744 posts in this thread

#745 Post by Ether »

.
Hello.

This thread -- BionicDog (updated: 2018-06-04) -- has 744 posts.

I can't help but believe there's gotta be a way to search all 744 posts to find answers to specific questions...

... but after trying for over an hour I can't figure out how.

I even tried Google but no joy - I want to limit the search to this thread's 744 posts.

With the included Firefox (= package "firefox-apulse"), sound works for me.
Did you install perhaps the Ubuntu "firefox" ? probably that needs pulseaudio installed to have working sound.

There's a little trick that MochiMoppel once advised, adding &ppage=1000 to the url makes it one large page and then you can do a search (Ctrl + f)
So then becomes:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... ppage=1000

Custom Searches

#748 Post by mikeslr »

The following page will run a custom google search of this Forum, https://cse.google.com/cse?cx=015995643 ... #gsc.tab=0. For BionicDog specific searches just include BionicDog as part of the search terms, e.g. BionicDog wireless. Best bookmarked or stored in a text file as it is impossible to memorize.

This search engine provides choices of Puppy related websites beyond this Forum. It is somewhat older. I am not certain all the choices still link to existing websites. http://puppylinux.us/psearch.html

Thanks Fred.

That was exactly what I was looking for. Works great.

I saved the page offline for future searches.

pulseaudio

My bad. I forgot to mention that I updated Firefox (from the Ubuntu universe repo). I should have mentioned that in my original question.
Fred wrote:Did you install perhaps the Ubuntu "firefox" ? probably that needs pulseaudio installed to have working sound.
What's the best way to do that?
Can I simply do apt install pulseaudio?

This is not intended to be snarky or unappreciative, by why wasn't "pulseaudio" included in the ISO? Are there other known missing pieces I should install in order to be more fully binary compatible with Ubuntu Bionic universe repo?

Thanks

Yes, ok, well.. I'd say in fact the Ubuntu maintainers should have made pulseaudio a dependency of Firefox, apparently they assume that pulseaudio is already installed.
I didn't include in the ISO because of trying to keep it as small as possible (and I don't like pulseaudio very much personally)

Not sure if you really need pulseaudio, if not, the easiest is to install again the 'firefox-apulse" package.
It can update itself to the latest version (currently 65.0.1).
(but needs libatomic1 installed, see my above post)

Or keep the Ubuntu universe Firefox and run it with apulse,(just tested and sound works).
Therefore you need to reinstall the apulse package:

Code: Select all

apt-get install --reinstall apulse
And then run Firefox this way:

Code: Select all

apulse firefox
Also then you may need to edit the firefox launcher in /usr/share/applications, find the line with "Exec=" and change to:

Code: Select all

Exec=apulse firefox %u

BionicDog32 no sound

That thought occurred to me after posting my question
I didn't include in the ISO because of trying to keep it as small as possible
I was thinking that was probably the reason.

Out of curiousity, how many of these close-call decisions does a dog-linux developer have to make? Is it a handful, or scores, or hundreds... ?

(and I don't like pulseaudio very much personally)
May I ask why?

After trying both the above, and other variations (like starting with a fresh install), I could not get Firefox in BionicDog32 to play sound.

DebDog Jessie works. XenialPup works. BionicPup works. But I can't get BionicDog32 (which is the one I want) to work.

I've attached several screenshots showing a fresh install. If you could make some additional suggestions how to proceed from there I will try them:

Hi Ether, I'm in a hurry, so keeping it short .
Well... yes, I can imagine it's all very confusing, but the solution is very simple
From a fresh install of BD:
- install libatomic1
- update firefox from Help > About (after ran just "Firefox" from menu, not Firefox as puppy)
As it is described here:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/up ... st-version

Gotta think about a less confusing setup, probably later I'll make a new firefox-apulse package (v65) with correct dependencies (libatomic1, apulse)

Still no sound. Bummer. See attachments.

I will provide whatever info you request and do any tests that might be helpful if you are willing to pursue this.

Hi Ether, I wonder, from a pristine install of BD, sound does work for you ? (with firefox or with any other application, e.g. mplayer or mpv)
If not, there's a problem you have that I don't understand.
You do have adjusted alsamixer to maximum ?
To clarify about libatomic1, it has not to do with sound, just without it the newest firefox wouldn't run.
Is apulse in PATH ?, check with:

Code: Select all

which apulse

No.

No. I tried to play WAV and MP3 files on my hard disk using each of the audio apps in the "audio" category of the "start"menu. No sound. See attachments

I don't know. I've never used it, Where would I find that? There's a mixer icon in the task bar (see attachment) but it doesn't work (nothing happens when I click on it or use the scroll wheel on the mouse)

Aha, that's a whole different issue, no sound at all, I thought you had no sound with firefox only.

What you could try:
From terminal:

Code: Select all

audio-setup
It will run "alsactl init" and should display alsamixer then
Or, if that doesn't work as expected: from Menu > System > Sound Card Selector , to select your soundcard, maybe that's required.

Btw, updated package firefox-apulse to v65, install from Synaptic and upgrade apulse, or from terminal with apt-get:

Code: Select all

apt-get update
apt-get install firefox-apulse
apt-get install apulse

Sorry, I didn't realize that until you suggested I try playing some local audio files.

@Ether: In Sound Card Selector, does the drop-down list of available cards ONLY show Card 1?

Have you used the Select and Edit buttons to set that card as the default audio output?

What does your /root/.asound.rc file currently contain?

You can verify that you have the right card by running "alsamixer" from the command line.
