Subject description: Puppy Linux and other Small Distros supported at this forum

Also post made in Beginners Section but unlikely to be visible for long unless made sticky. Sorry, I don't have the authority to make it a sticky post (nor to physically move the entire thread), but I will endeavour to update the distribution overview information at regular intervals:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=117610

Note that to avoid further duplication I am now only keeping one copy of this information list I'm maintaining, which will be found as blog post at tinylinux.info website:

https://www.tinylinux.info

or more specifically: https://www.tinylinux.info/post/distributions-created-by-puppy-forum-members/

Corrigendum:

Plus the Debian-based Pups, called DPups, since many years ago, initiated by former
forum member gposil. Born at the same time as the SlackoPups and the UPups.

You forgot those, wiak: the original DPup-4,82, then DPup-4.87, then SqueezePup,
WheezyPup, StretchPup and now DPupBuster. (Back with some URL's later.)

Important and knowledgeable forum members and devs contributed to this Puppy
breed: gposil and dejan555; iguleder et al.; pemasu; ttuuxxx, SailorEnceadus et al.;
radky; now josejp2424 and myself -- et al.. More to come, I'm sure.

The presence of the DebianDogs on this board tend to overshadow the DPups, but the
latter are still an important branch of the PuppyLinux family -- they always have been.

You are forgiven because you are relatively new to the Puppy scene. Newer than the
original DPups, certainly, so you could not have witnessed the evolution of that Puppy
breed first-hand.

BFN.

The post at the top of this thread is not intended to be a history of Puppy (or any of the other distros mentioned) and the people who contributed to that history. That is already done in puppylinux.com website, which is linked to. As I said, for Puppy (and similarly for the DebianDogs):

Note that if puppylinux.com needs to have its information updated, that is up to its maintainer.

Nor is the post expected to be final - it is just an effort on my part to get such a post established/used.

In respect to you odd comment about me being relatively new to the Puppy scene: You do seem to be somewhat even "newer" to the Puppy scene musher0, not that that is relevant to the discussion.

wiak

EDIT: Note that there is also a quite recent DevuanDog 'Beowulf' Alpha available on the Puppy forum, but not yet 'officially released' via main Dog website, but again, that is up to fredx181 when and if he decides to announce that one on the official Dog website. My post is not meant to be any kind of substitute for the overall documentation available officially.

In other words, the main post of this thread was never meant to be a complete listing of all current and past distros. That would be overly complex for this post's purpose and quite irrelevant IMO since Puppy has a perfectly good official website that should be maintained with correct up-to-date info on distributions. Similarly for the Dogs.

If someone wants to also compile a listing of all Puppy forum distros past and present they are of course welcome to do so! Wink

What I might do, however, to avoid any jealousy issues "anyone" might have, is to remove the one line of info I included naming the initiator/creator of the project. That info can again be found on the official threads or websites. I prefer it as it is (currently only BarryK is credited as far as Puppy distros are concerned), but others can decide.

Bit sad Sad Sad Sad that:

UPupBB & UPupCC
ScPup & ScPup64
LxPupSc & LxPupSc64

all Woof-CE builds

and LxPupBionic derivative of UPupBB

were not included / mentioned.....

see: http://puppylinux.com/download.html

Well, peebee, if worst comes to the worst, the list 'can' be expanded. But surely you see my point that LxPups etc and so on should be listed on puppylinux.com, which is really what my list points to. If LxPup already on puppylinux.com I guess that would be in the 'quick one line list' - I don't think it is. So really I suggest you get puppylinux.com website brought up-to-date since my list is simply a pointer to that when it comes to details for Puppy.

In other words get your woof-CE pups acknowledged as official on the official puppy linux website. That's not my problem.

Over time there are tons of Puppy distros (some being woof-CE built) - this list is not a replacement for puppylinux.com. Sorry about that...

wiak

Note that the list says:
Quote:
For example:
where examples currently are official per puppylinux.com website. The "For example" list can be changed, but should fit in with official Puppy site official downloads details. Like I said in another post, if someone wants to compile a more complete list of everything available on forum then that's up to them, but too complicated for my purpose, which is to point to main distro website for details.

I suggest to Flash to make sticky this thread at first spot in Projects section.

Well done wiak ! Thanks.

Although I know your intention is just to do make clear what are the different types of OS's offered in this forum, I'd say it wouldn't do any harm to list some more Woof-CE built Puppies (e.g. LxPup, Dpup)

If you remove the "For example" list and add a link to:
http://puppylinux.com/download.html
then that would be better.....in my opinion

[for example BionicPup is not yet released (as in blessed as "Official" and proffered to Distrowatch) and does not yet appear on puppylinux.com whereas LxPupSc and UPupBB do]

Yes I think that is better, or it becomes a never-ending problem to keep up.

thanks

All these individuals are accredited/thanked in relevant DebianDog Organisation website. For simplicity, I have now removed any individual mentions from my list concerning the Deb Dogs, since such mentions don't matter to me in terms of post purpose. Indeed, the only individual now mentioned at all in my post is BarryK himself, since that mention has the purpose of showing a direct dev relationship between Puppy, Quirky, and EasyOS. Hope that alteration satisfies those who are concerned with being credited or otherwise: any such credit should in any case be provided in the main distro threads/website, where due and relevant.

Hi, wiak.

I appreciate your efforts, and I'm sure everybody does, but your alterations simply
pass the buck to the general Puppy site.

Now this site does do justice to the LXPups, but NOT to the DPups. Why the oversight?
There is no valid reason why all variants of Puppy cannot share the spotlight.

There are at least two DPups in activity as I write these lines, radky's Stretch-7.5, and
josejp2424's DPupBuster-7.9.0.2.

Best regards to all.

Correct, the official Puppy website is a good place for officially recognised Puppy distributions to be listed. If someone feels their Puppy creation should be officially recognised then they should ask the maintainer at the Puppy website to consider adding their distro to the list. Much better than over-complicating a simple post like mine, which isn't trying to organise Puppy Linux itself; that's the job of the official Puppy site. I don't want to mention all the individual Puppy (or Deb Dogs) distributions in my simple post - that's not it's purpose.

EDIT: Please note that I do consider the raised concern valid. I am aware of these Puppy distros, but really puppylinux.com is the home of Puppy and it is important that Puppy keeps its own house in order. I am not trying to substitute for that. I'm sure new distributions should be able to be added to puppylinux.com (else, why not?); if not, then yes, reluctantly I could add a couple of extra entries specially, but there shouldn't be a need for special mentions like that IMO.
