Need easy to use fax program for Puppy

#1 Post by Fox7777 »

One thing we have never figured out is how to fax on Linux. Hylafax & Open Office on Suse 9.3 supposedly have fax capability but no one seems to know how to operate them to successfully send and receive faxes. We would like to see an easy to use fax program available on Puppy, PupGet, DotPup, etc.

Unless there is a real need to send fax's, using email on a dialup account is cheaper as a fax still requires that you dial the number and if it is an overseas call it can be costly.

There is a small program efax but it requires that you set it up before you install it, using your own settings.

There may be a way around this but I haven't been through all the code to see what is required to run it as far the likes of getty or mgetty.

I'll do a dummy run and see what I can work out.

efax

efax look as it could work but like ian mentioned you need to
you need to set it up because of the different fax modems!!
I looked at it and wen to run the program but it could'nt find a fax
modem as I don't have one.

I usually run down to the local wanna be copy shop
and pay a buck and a half, though I rarely fax!!!
I say wanna be because you can only get business cards in three
flavors? 3? good night! there are probably more ways to make
business cards than I can think of, but noooo!
not in this small town. errrrr

EDIT/ Ian if you see this, I have a cable modem. Is it also a fax modem??
not that I need a fax but one never knows???

Ok Lobster, I'll have a go at setting up FaxMail and see how it goes, it certainly reads as easier to set up than efax.

Rev, most externel modems are voice, fax modems.

Good luck Ian

You can collect email from any browser these days (even pop3)

FaxMail looks like it requires Sendmail or smail neither of which I can find in Puppy so I'm looking at Sendmail, it requires q bit of fiddling by the look of it but we'll see what happens.

Ok this is going to take a bit of time to configure, I have never had to install SendMail as it is usually included in most distros so don't hold your breath.

I haven't had time to do much but if anyone want's to do a search on the net for other ways of sending fax's feel free to do so.

I rarely use fax as most people have discovered email and attachments. Last summer I had to send fax of body shop estimate to an insurance company. Booted Knoppix and used Kfax. Worked ok, but little hassle since I use prepaid long distance and it didnt allow for that. I ended up dialing fax number with phone on same line then sort of simutaneously sending fax and hanging up phone. Worked but yuck

. Today some goofy realtor insisted the only way he'd send info was by fax. Not wanting to relearn ins and outs of Kfax for one use, I remembered long ago used a fax program for window called "stupidfax". Its old (last version like 2001) but I installed it on my XP partition. Alas receives faxes only, but talk about simple and it worked flawless even though its never been updated for XP. Just binary, no registry entries, etc. Thats what a computer fax program should be like. Wish it was ported to linux.

I am having problems with Sendmail so I might look at mgettyy+sendfax and see if I can make progress with it.

It also depends on the size.
