Hmm got the "easydd"
ran into problems straight away on Xenial64

Code: Select all

Need 'pupmessage' or 'gxmessage' utilities
You have probably dealt with this somewhere already but at 52 pages I'm not going to read through just yet.

OK so I got the file down and tried with easydd but it did not work as a command line either

Code: Select all

easydd xerus64-8.5-8gb.img.gz sdb
so i did the normal dd thing after first formating the stick with gparted . I will try an ext4 first as I find these more reliable . I set the boot flag on .

Code: Select all

root# dd if=xerus64-8.5-8gb.img.gz of=sdb
1108791+1 records in
1108791+1 records out
567701482 bytes (568 MB, 541 MiB) copied, 3.14177 s, 181 MB/s
root#
and now to boot from it

And what do I get

Code: Select all

wee 0>find --set-root /grldr
wee 15> /grldr
wee 17.> -
Hmm Not happy Jan !

I better try extracting the image file first-Yes thats looking better

Code: Select all

root# dd if=./xerus64-8.5-8gb.img of=/dev/sdb
14680064+0 records in
14680064+0 records out
7516192768 bytes (7.5 GB, 7.0 GiB) copied, 2397.61 s, 3.1 MB/s
root#
2397.61 s=40 minutes to write to USB2 stick

Now to see if it boots

Yep - using it now . Thanks Barry I'll let you know what I think . First though I might use a USB3 stick the 2 is very slow.

WoW

Using Seamonkey its about the slowest system I have ever used . Don't know if it gets faster or if a USB3 stick would improve it but I think I'll ditch this and try to cut a CD and boot from it

Just don't have the time to sit and wait..

Could not get a lastpass addon for seamonkey . They have been monkeying around with it . Its the one main add-on I use together with Adblock so if they are not there its useless for me and they are not it seems.

Back on xenial64 and its going well.

Regarding this:

Code: Select all

easydd xerus64-8.5-8gb.img.gz sdb
If you downloaded easydd to the current directory, not into the $PATH, then you will need to prefix:

Code: Select all

./easydd xerus64-8.5-8gb.img.gz
...also, I recommend leave off the "sdb", as easydd will probe for it and ask which drive, which makes things less error-prone.

Yes, apart from expanding the image-file first, that will only write to a file named "sdb", not to the drive:

Code: Select all

dd if=xerus64-8.5-8gb.img.gz of=sdb
One important thing, type "sync" in the terminal before unplugging the drive, after having run dd.

Hope BK retrenches and keeps Quirky alive. Along with Slacko, one of the best and most reliable bits of kit in the CD-RW toolkit...

Looks like Quirky is unable to run Abiword or Gnumeric past versions 8.0... those are two biggies. I haven't tried the FreeOffice .PET's but I would assume they do not work either.

I like LibreOffice as much as the next person but there are times when I prefer the lightweight alternatives, such as Abiword/Gnumeric or FreeOffice. I also have a lot of files from those programs, and it's a pain to convert them. But I suppose you can't have everything.

The latest version of Abiword is 3.02. I installed 3.01 from petget and so far it seems to work just fine. I haven't done extensive testing though. I did install the gnome-icon-theme just to make it look right.

I haven't tried gnumeric.

Increasingly I'm using LibreOffice much less now. I don't do presentations or database/math stuff, so just used to install it for spreadsheets and writer. Tend now to create documents manually using (basic) html, view them using a browser, print to PDF (file) to store them as pdf's alongside the html. gnumeric services my spreadsheet needs. Nice thing about html is you can use standard cli tools to search for things within your documents folders.

gnumeric in Quirky Xerus 8.3

#791 Post by lp-dolittle »

Hi DanielSong39,

did you try to install Gnumeric or Abiword from the pet repository?

I have not installed Abiword, but I'm using Gnumeric_1.12.28-1 in Quirky Xerus 8.3 without any problems.
The Gnumeric pet is available from the ubuntu-xenial-main repository.

kind regards

Quirky Xerus 8.4 location of q.sfs

#792 Post by lp-dolittle »

@ Barry,

highly appreciating Quirky Xerus, I'm using it in all variants (installed on internal HD's; installed on flash-drives; frugal installation). However, as the attached Screenshots illustrate, the flash-drive installation seems to be affected by a 'potential' bug.

After a Quirky Xerus 8.4 installation onto a flash-drive which was inserted as sdb, ROX-filer shows q.sfs correctly in /mnt/sdb (attachment 1) and everything seems to work well as long as no additional drive is inserted.

In a changed configuration, ROX-filer shows q.sfs e.g. in /mnt/sdc/mnt/sdb, (attachment 2)! The same is true if the runnig OS is a Puppy and the Quirky Xerus 8.4 flash-drive is attached as sdc, sdc2 being mounted (attachment 3).

If Quirky Xerus 8.4 is running on sda, while the Quirky Xerus 8.4 flash-stick is attached as sdc (sdc2 mounted), a path confusion results (attachment 4).

why does the 'internal' (within the working partition of the flash-stick) path to q.sfs etc. not get adapted to the flash-stick's changing position?
Bug or not a bug?

kind regards

EDIT:

after I sent another post referring to an assumed q.sfs 'problem' to Barry Kauler on August 17th, I got a 'revealing' answer which made me rethink the above-described issue ... just to discover that my Xerus8.4-flash stick in question was corrupted in so far as erroneously a folder containing s_sfs, Q_ID, q.sfs and s.sfs was present in /mnt/sdb2!
In order to make sure, I re-installed Quirky Xerus onto the flash stick, testing the *.img.gz as well as the *.iso variant, and - in both cases - got properly running Quirky Xeruses without any q.sfs files.

As shown by this rather embarrassing experience, the 'confusing' potential of q.sfs files which 'accidentally' are stored/saved in an unfit location should be kept in view!
In fact, quite a modest insight!

Except of that, apologies for the finally misleading above alert!

Upgrading Xerus 8.5 to 8.6

#796 Post by Rodney Byne »

Barry,
are you going to add 8.6 to the 8.5 upgrade manager,
to save having to clean install again to the same usb?
Thanks, regards.

Crossed my fingers that I could make this post. The forum keeps logging me out.

Billtoo,
Something odd, those "zip" and "trash" icons were supposed to automatically move over to the right side of the screen.

Haven't had that problem for a long time. Will check it out.

Rodney,
There is a 8.5 to 8.6 Service Pack PET, but it is 300MB, as there are so many changes.

I haven't actually tried to use it -- you can be the guinea pig!

I have been running a full install of 8.5 on an internal HDD. Tried an update but it would not fully complete. Left for for maybe 15 - 20 minutes. Looked in htop and the post-install script (not sure of its exact name) was showing but appeared inactive. Decided to reboot, but could not get to a desktop. Xorgwizard did not help. Anyway, decided to download an image an copy to a USB stick. That works fine, and once it was set up the way I wanted I just copied it over to the partition I used previously.
Had problems with the devx via PPM. Again, the installation never seemed to end, and there was nothing after a reboot. Downloaded the pet manually and installed it that way. Working well now.

q.sfs

#799 Post by lp-dolittle »

@ Barry,

in view of my recent posts, I'm wondering where q.sfs has gone in Quirky Xerus 8.6.
File finder also shows no result. A potential consequence of major architecture changes?

My inability to find q.sfs makes me feel embarrassed.

gcmartin sent me an email, reporting that a remastered dvd failed to boot.

Running from cd/dvd, at first shutdown, or by clicking on the "save" icon, there is an offer to either save the session to hard drive, or to remaster the cd.

Most people choose the former. The latter has not been tested for a long time. gcmartin tried it, and the resulting dvd failed with a message that file 'ldlinux.c32' is missing.

Ah. yes. The /usr/sbin/savesession script has not been worked on for a long time. It was developed for syslinux 4.x. However, now using syslinux 5.x, which needs that extra file.

It can be fixed manually, click on the cd icon on the desktop, and copy 'ldlinux.c32' to /boot/iso

I have rebuilt the 8.6 iso with that file included in boot/iso, and reuploaded the iso file to ibiblio. No change in version.

One thing though. As that script was worked on long ago, the remastered iso is for legacy-bios booting only, it is not uefi-aware.

Also, an odd choice perhaps, the remastered cd has q.sfs inside initrd.q, which means a long wait at bootup.
