Both the native Hardinfo and CPUtemp applications do not show the temperatures. I guess this behavior is related to turning off the ACPI. I have a Dell D810 with the same processor.

Just checked. The kernel in 3.01 and 4.1.2 retro is the same i.e. 2.6.21.7 so there is no sata support as you quite rightly stated. I like to buy the least expensive Logitech devices available.

They work fine with the Puppies I've tried them on and don't
even need a setup disc.

The Logitech C110 is really cheap and does fine with Skype.

Tried Precise live cd and usb on a few different laptops and PCs.
On some it skips configuration on boot; on some it doesn't.
The particular machine makes a difference.
