It seems like machines that are on the ragged edge of the SFS copy RAM threshold vary a great deal in how well the live system behaves once it's up and running. I remember Barry lowering the threshold down from 256 at my request for a Puppy 4 release. Now that it's back to 256, I suspect he either a...

Re: Booting Puppy from iso using Grub2
I have an old laptop with broken cd drive and old no-bootable usb port. I'm wondering if I could boot Puppy Linux iso directly using the loopback option of Grub2, as described in this article: http://michael-prokop.at/blog/2009/05/25/boot-an-iso-via-grub2/ Is it possible? From the hard drive? You m...

Re: A Bug
In the lower left-hand corner of the desktop, the drive icons are clustered on top of one another. In the lower right-hand corner, the Lock and Trash icons are clustered on top of one another. The above happened using an 800x600 resolution, but did not occur in Puppy 4.1.2. In updated 4.21 again th...

I assume you're running Windows. If so, then use... UNETBOOTIN! This should save you some trouble. You don't even have to pick Puppy. It can download some other distros. Without knowing anything about your machine, I might suggest Linux Mint or Mandriva. I agree that instructions are not so easy to ...

The Isolinux bootup screen could use a font color with better contrast for the boot options line than dark blue. When F2 is pressed, the same line is now white and easier to read. Very interesting color choice for the desktop wallpaper as well! Otherwise, the JWM, GTK, and icon theme work well toget...

That is a feature of Puppy 4. I believe it is set through the bootup manager - wherever it is that you choose additional SFS files to load. Please explain more. Where exactly in the boot manager and in which boot manager ? Examples ? Many thanks. It's been a while since I've used Puppy on a regular...

I installed presto on an acer desktop Seemed to find all the hardware and the second boot was very quick, under 15 seconds. Could puppy's boot scripts make a note of hardware on first boot and skip all the scanning on subsequent boots unless directed to scan for new hardware. A stripped down system...

I think Grub4Dos works with CDs and I think it will boot an ISO image on a hard drive. And a boot manager called PLoP works with Non BIOS bootable Cds/DVD AND USB drives that are not BIOS bootable. In my limiting testing, I've found that Grub4DOS's map command to boot from an ISO will only get you ...

For anyone with a small screen resolution => bling. Even with a large monitor, I don't see why you'd need TWO clocks. :? I thought Barry's old setup covered all the bases, was compact, and visible all the time. Only the xload graph was not really showing what you would expect. I don't know why we co...

The BIOS thinks it's a USB ZIP, huh? I had the same problem with a Cruzer Micro on my Dell. It wouldn't boot. I solved it - actually, the Ubuntu USB startup disk creator solved it - by assigning the LBA flag to the partition. It already had the boot flag, but that wasn't enough. Afterwards, the driv...

I really like that idea. One thing that would be nice to include in the GUI would also be test buttons. Play the dog barking to test sound, test eth0 or whatever its called for network, ping google.com to test internet, etc This is kind of off topic but not completely. Every other distro, or OS for...

I think the point everyone seems to be missing is the boot speed . Getting Puppy to boot on a Windows machine is not terribly difficult. I, however, don't think I've seen Puppy ever boot in 15s, and definitely not in a net-ready configuration. Woof is likely to slow this down even more with the new ...
