Thanks for posting your file. The problem is me!!! I put a space between splash and image.
Your menu.lst entry should look like this:
splashimage=(hd0,1)/boot/grub/splash/pl3gs.xpm - GOOD
NOT
splash image=(hd0,1)/boot/grub/splash/pl3gs.xpm - BAD

Grub eye candy
I modified some existing art work to make a Puppy Linux specific splash page for GRUB. Any suggestion on how to share it with others? It appears I cannot upload files and my free web hosting site will not allow me to upload XPM files.
