3.01 to 4 beta 2 upgrade reasonably successful

I had better luck moving from 3.01 to 4 beta2 than from 4 beta1 to beta2. Upgrade from 3.01 succeeded after reporting several dozen missing dependencies. Despite this, everything appears to work. Issues noted: - Desktop completely reset to stock beta 2. No trace of 3.01 customization. - Time zone re...

Epdfview will not run in r6?

I've just completed a "stock" install of release 6 on flash and it's marvelous. However I've not been able to run epdfview. Launching it from a terminal results in an immediate "Segmentation fault".

Can anyone confirm this problem - or the lack of it? Thanks.

Let's not loose sight of Puppy's prime directive.

Barry, Most all of these suggestions are good ones, but we must remain mindful of just what distinguishes Puppy from the rest of the pack. At less than 100MB, Puppy cannot offer ALL the plumbing included in your typical 680+MB distro. What it can, and in my opinion should, do is to offer the best, m...

Puppy 4 theme

I believe a relatively conventional (but inspired!) look is best as the default. More adventurous themes like Citrus can be offered as options, included or available. I generally tend to favor environments easy on the eye and brain and find Stardust appealing.

Truecrypt 4.3a requires device-mapper under 3.01

AliG - me thinks you need to install device-mapper (see Wolf Pup's related post above). That did the trick for me under 3.01.

TrueCrypt from PET defaults to filesystem type "msdos"

It appears that TrueCrypt v4.3a, as packaged by Wolf Pup defaults to filesystem type "msdos" (8 by 3 file names only). This is not Truecrypt's normal behavior, so something in the packaging or perhaps in device-mapper (found to be required) is responsible. A work-around is to specify the f...

TrueCrypt 4.3a working under 3.01 but...

Wolf Pup's suggestion re device-mapper did the trick. After installing it, I was able to load module truecrypt and was, after reboot, able to mount TC volumes. But... TC mounts volumes as type "msdos" - not "vfat" (8x3 filenames only). This has me stumped, as opening the same vol...

Key bindings do not work in Netsurf

I'm afraid I can't say if the keyboard shortcuts in Netsurf worked prior to 3.01 Final, but they do not appear to work now. No response to key combos whatsoever. I've not had any other like problems in 3.01.

Upgrade went smoothly. I am booting from flash into 1GB ram.

Driver problem encountered with Geforce 6200LE

Just a warning to those running a Geforce 6200LE video card, as I've had the same problem with this card and Nvidia drivers under Ubuntu. After a successful driver install and reboot, video disappears except under Xorg (no video after CTRL+1 or 2). The card's output is profoundly affected as the mon...

Reboot occassionally restores stock desktop icons

Puppy 3.0 employs 48 pixel desktop icons. I prefer 32 pixel icons at 1024x768x24 video resolution. I carefully changed each of Pups stock icons with a 32 pixel alternative from /usr... Pup 3 appears to randomly remove custom desktop icons, replacing them with Barry's stock icons. It does not necessa...

A workaround

I discovered this temporary workaround by accident using 3.0 beta 2 on flash with Geforce 6200 video and xorg @ 1024x768x24. It works under 3.0 final as well. Switching to and from "full-screen" works when the gxine window is maximized. This trick may suffice you until the fs problem is so...

Seamonkey 1.1.2 extension installs fail

I attempted to install Noscript and Mouse Gesture extensions to Seamonkey 1.1.2. Both download and then fail with error 201. Same behavior under betas 2 and 3 I've yet to identify this error code, so I can't be sure who or what's at fault. Both these extensions installed and worked under 2.17 (Seamo...

Unresolved SANE and XSANE dependencies in 3.0 beta 2

SANE and XSANE, which install correctly under 2.17, fail to install under 3 beta 2. Installer flags multiple unsatisfied dependencies in each case. This could be related to alignment with Slackware 12.

Error - libexpat.so.0 missing

This may not be a Puppy issue per se, as I've run into the problem in other distros. But for the record; The BOINC folding software installed and ran under 2.17 without problems. After the upgrade to 3 beta 2, the BOINC GUI (manager) would not start, reporting missing shared libraries. It was lookin...

Full-screen problem only when Gxine not maximized

I've since discovered that this problem occurs only when Gxine is NOT maximized. Maximizing Gxine and then going to full-screen does work, though with a few more artifacts than under 2.17.

CUPS network printing survived upgrade from 2.17

My experience was different.

Booting Pup 3 beta 2 with my 2.17 pup_save file preserved my CUPS network printer configuration (IPP). Printing worked. The transition was 'seamless'.

Gxine full-screen display problem (Pup 3 beta 2)

Selecting the full-screen mode in Gxine during DVD movie play did not work. Screen flashed once, briefly and Gxine returned to windowed display and continued normal play. This session was booted from CD (md5sum verified) with pfix=ram (1GB) and Xorg configured to 1024x768x24 for my Geforce 6200 vide...
