Laptop - a Limerick

I needed a laptop one day
But I new what the salesman would say:
"An Apple a day, keeps the doctor away
If you buy Hewlett Packard you're knackered!"

I have a 2 year old HP laptop to which I can't install Quirky 8.7.1. It can see all the partitions on the disk, but on choosing a specific partition to install to, the installer keeps issuing an error message saying that the partitions are unreadable and to maybe try another one instead. This Quirky...

Two install attempts to external mechanical-rotating hard disk paritions (old USB 2.0) failed to boot - kernel panic. Grub2 found the partitions OK and the files copied over perfectly, but would simply not boot up. Looks like a Grub2 problem. Install to USB2 flash stick was OK using the 8g USB image...

Realtek wifi modules fix

As far as I know, this only occurs on certain laptops that have a dual-purpose Realtek bluetooth/wifi card. Mine is a newish but basic model HP laptop an HP 15-ba519ng with an AMD motherboard. On searching round the internet there seems to be a lot of users that are affected by this. The problem is ...

linux kernel headers 4.11.11

Thanks dom570 that worked OK. If anyone else has a problem with the Realtek rtl8723be wifi module here is a solution. There appears to be a bug with the kernel module in the generic linux kernel in that it defaults to the wrong antenna in this new-fangled wifi/bluetooth card as supplied in my HP lap...

corrupted devx pet

I tried downloading the devx 8.2 xerus pet from NLUUG. It is clear that this download server is having major problems - maybe busted by a virus. The download rate was 3 times that as allowed by my service provider and the pet package was 3 times larger than it should have been. The pet refused to ins...

I would recommand here to include the depositories for Ubuntu 16.04 in Woof-CE I'm no Ubuntu expert, but I've read somewhere on the Ubuntu blogs, that 16.04 is going to have fundamental changes made to the underlying system - amongst other things, the X graphical interface. This could impact the st...

@oui This Tahrpup 64-based remaster simply contains all of the original packages from Tahrpup64 plus the latest stable version of Darktable (1.6.9). The version of Darktable provided by the Tahrpup repos is back at 1.4 something. The included Gimp 2.8 though, comes directly from the Tahrpup repo. Wh...

@greengeek I'm pleased that this is of help. I'll try to get the time to streamline this Fotopup a bit more efficiently by implementing it as a Woof-CE build and also enhance it a bit with Rawtherapee plus a whole bunch of Darktable styles ready to go out of the box. It'll mean that the ISO will be ...

@musher0 It's probably more by accident than by design that some of the older IBM laptops are libre-friendly. I think RMS was referring to early Thinkpads that had on-board Intel graphics, Atheros wifi and a compatible Ethernet driver. Talking about a future Puppy derivative, I've just installed Lub...

@musher0 Yes it's nice to back. I've been messing around with other stuff for quite a while - digital photography mostly, but the latest Puppy developments have pulled me back into the fold. Comparing Librepup with the other FSF official offerings, it has the potential to overtake many if not all of...

Awesome work! This distro looks as if it ought to be included in the Free Software Foundation's officially approved distro listings.

Richard Stallman can be contacted at:

rms@gnu.org

Not many distros actually do get an accreditation, but this one seems to possess the necessary attributes AFAIK.

@Greengeek Tut tut, that's not very friendly of Mega, is it now? I did have some trouble formatting the URL to the file in the Murga forum. Have another go at it, being careful not to include the url hashtags at either end of the url itself. Here it is again: https://mega.nz/#!hJVD0IIK!Yvf1RJs2evEPw...

Fotopup

Here's a link to a live CD that contains digital photographic workflow tools that include amongst others, Darktable, UFRAW, and the Gimp. This live CD is a remaster of a version of a community-based version of Puppy Linux- Tahrpup64 that I've named Fotopup. Use the link to save the fotopup.iso file ...

Thanks to the all the developers of this great version. This has made my weekend. Tried to create an encrypted save file (light) on first shutdown. Won't let me log in on next boot up. Unencrypted save file is fine. Also, when trying to update the PPM, I'm getting a little error message on the yello...
