mplayer appears to ignore dvd menus, though it will play a dvd as a whole.
Not a big issue, as vlc is available as a pet, and works with dvd menu.

I have a frugal hard drive install which saves to a partition. I would like to change to saving to a file on the hard drive. How do I ask Puppy to do this?

No, I think it's fine. The double quotes on the outside won't be bothered by any doublequotes that are inside backticks. Bash is smart enough to sort that out on its own. Thanks for that Pizzasgood.
