That makes good sense. I hadn't really looked at the boot options, but now that you mention it, I think the pfix=ram option is exactly what I need. Now I can have my cake and eat it too. Thanks

I'm still definitely staying with Puppy, but I've moved to "back" 2.14. I found 2.15 was harder to work with. I have another post where I document the multisession trouble I had with 2.15 (nothing similar with 2.14). Also, in my struggles to install R, i found that I got more missing libra...

I don't know if it works (not having tested it), but the screenshots of Rudy 2.14 have a suspend shortcut on the desktop. Maybe check with the makers of that derivative, to see if it works there?

Sorry, but do you mind pointing me at the dotpup? I don't know where it is. I've found a lot of KDE related stuff, but mostly associated with creating the whole window manager, which I don't think is needed for just kdissert.

Thanks

kdissert possible?

Would it be possible to create a reasonably sized kdissert dotpup? kdissert is the mind-mapping program that's part of KDE. http://freehackers.org/~tnagy/kdissert.html As the "dissert(ation)" in the name suggests, it is ideal for writers of long, complex text documents. I've tried Freemind...

Raffy, I'm actually Arran (not another Mark). My confusing post was meant to thank THE Mark (MU), who really did all the work. In terms of R's most used packages, it would depend on what you're studying. I'm in psychology, so I tend to use the inferential statistics stuff associated with GLM. If you...

R is a statistical computing language. You can use it to do the sorts of things that you would do in commercial packages like SAS or SPSS, only R is free and does a whole lot more.

Which version of R is in the dotpup?

I downloaded and installed the R-2.4.0 dotpup from http://dotpups.de/dotpups/. It runs after a few tweaks (see http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=17826). However, I'm having some internal dependency trouble in R. When I try to install certain newer packages, they fail because the version o...

Install R (statistical computing language) on Puppy 2.14

Mark (MU) was good enough to help me get R running on my computer. I'm passing on the steps I used, so that Mark doesn't have to repeat his work with the next person who can't figure out how to install it. This was for multi-session 2.14, so there may be some small tweaks if you have a different set...

Woo Hoo!! That seems to have done the trick. At least I was able to successfully use the "update.packages" function. I'll put all this together in HOW TO. (here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=17826) Thanks Mark. (though i hit one other snag using R. i'll make the question ab...

Mark, Thanks for this. I'd be happy to give it a try, but I can't seem to download the R dotpup anymore. Since I use a multisession DVD and have no idea what I'm doing, I usually don't save failed sessions. So each time I try to install R, I start from scratch. But today, I can't download it. I get ...

Possibly I'm way out of line here, but from a noob's perspective, I note that you (Tui) only say that you've downloaded the programs. Have you also installed them? The tarball endings don't matter after installation, so I was wondering. I may be making a fool of myself, but I figured I'd check. If y...

I'm a beginner too, not a moderator, but these instructions may help (from http://www.puppylinux.org/user/news.php?readmore=47): To use: Copy the sfs file to the same folder that your pup_save file is in - usually /mnt/home (or in other words the top-level folder of your hard disk), then reboot Pupp...

For the record, I never did get this figured out. My multisession DVD was somehow fixated on the fourth session. I could get files from newer sessions to appear if I put them in directories that didn't exist in that fourth session, but anything in directories that were part of session 4 were overwri...

Mark, just let me be sure i've given you enough info, and that i understand your instructions. as i said above, R runs, and i used a native R function, "update.packages." this function searches the CRAN database for updates to the packages, then automatically downloads and installs them, a...

small HOW TO: set up plugins & spellcheck in abiword

Sorry if this is a repeat, but I didn't see it in my search of the forum. If you want to install both the PETget plugins and the US English spellcheck for abiword, you should do it in that order (i.e., spellcheck second). I had installed spellcheck first, from here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/view...
