Solved
Guys, thanks for the tips. The desktop now boots fine. I set up a new user and made the home directory mount, set permissions, and netdrive picks that up no problem in xp. I also booted with pfix=nox and sbd1 is mounted, and the share also works automatically. I haven't edited fstab or had to explic...

Thanks for your responses. It dawned on me that it was probably changing the root directory that did it. I am away from the puppy system just now, but will try adding another user. I will check that the drive is mounted before X starts, as it is essential that this happens. Later down the line I am ...

problems with Pcurlftpd and JWM at boot
Hi, It was very easy to share my usb external 500gb drive with my network on puppy 4.2.1 frugal insatll (CF flash ide) using pcurlftpd. It seems to work flawlessly with my xp machine immeidately after set-up. I followed this guide http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=294703 but am using ...

Icecast won't start as root user
Hi, There are few posts around the forum regarding the set-up of icecast, but no one has confirmed that they actually got it going in the end. I have set up the latest mpd and with icecast ouput support. Both seem to have compiled and installed OK. When I try to start the icecast server I get an err...

Problems detecting PCI card following kernel compile
Hi, Wasn't sure whether this is the right section of the forum (I am a beginner perhaps out my depth) I finally managed to compile the 2.6.21 kernel with the squashfs3.2 patch and con kolivas ck2 patchset (the main reason for compiling the 2.6.21 kernel). build using a full hd install, kernel config...

no further on
Hi, I had previously been using cfdisk to partition and format - gparted has been working much better. MUT will pick up the disk and shows the partitions. However, the only way I can get puppy to boot from the cf in ide is to leave the drive unformatted and let it be recognised as a superfloppy and ...

Thanks raffy. I had already formatted the disk with fat16 but as I mentioned the universal installer just writes ext3 over it. This is using the cf in ide option of the installer. I guess I should just wipe the swap partition to avoid excessive writes, then the installer will also work. Are you able...

frugal install on cf flash in ide adapter
Hi, Hope someone can help. Ive been trying to get 2.14 running from 2gb cf flash in an ide adapter using the universal installer. It works if I have no partitions on the disk. However, I want to have a swap file of 500mb and when I partition the drive in this way the universal installer will not rec...

Tried the 'free' command. it lists my full 1gb swap file, but says I am using none of it. It also states that I only have 143mb free of my 384mb of physical memory. The 'widgit' states that I have 491mb, can anyone clarify where the additional memory shown in the widgit is coming from? How do I enab...

GuestToo thanks for the further explanations. I followed a combination of HD install howtos posted by rarsa, specifically this one http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=14703 and another linked in that thread. It requires copying of the initrd.gz to the mounted partion, so not surprisingl...

I dont have hd space problems - 120gb. Think creating a seperate partion to un pack the source will do the trick, thanks for the tip. I have always just followed how-tos which do not discuss unpacking anywhere other than /usr/src, which I believe runs in ram as default when it is used regardless of ...

Setting up puppy fo kernel compiling
Hi I realise there will be a simple solution to my problem but have been unable to find anything through searching, hope someone can help. I want to patch the puppy kernel (for low latency audio, as mentioned on another thread) and whilst the patching process itself seems fairly straight forward, I ...

Compiling kernel
Hi, Hope someone can help me out here. I am trying to go about recompiling the puppy kernel as per the discussion so far in this thread. Any guide I can find on either general compiling of the kernel or particular to the premption patches states that I should do everything in the directory /usr/src ...

Tempestuous - thanks for an excellent link, pretty much sums up the current state of play. Will go ahead with this. What I want to do is run puppy from a CF card in an ide adaptor (still to ram) - will this type of install suffice for recompiling or will a hard drive install then remaster to flash b...

Tempestuous I couldnt find the Preemption Model > Preemptible Kernel (Low-Latency Desktop) in the config file. There is CONFIG_PREEMPT which I think may be pretty much the same option - this should give full preemption when enabled after recompiling. Not sure why im not seeing the same options as yo...
