but it will be faster if I make a swap file? Why is that, since accessing the HDD is slower than accessing RAM? Or did I just misunderstand everything again? :) It won't make it any faster in your case. The only reason for a swap file would be in case it runs out of RAM. Maybe someone more technica...

Could you answer a few questions for me as I'll be trying to use CUPS 1.3.9 in NOP 4.13 and probably recycling old computers; In the list you have CUPS, Gutenprint, HPLIP, PNM2PPA, SPLIX, FOO2ZJS What are all these? Are they components of CUPS or alternatives to CUPS or are they all the inter-relate...

It depends on your RAM memory - how much does your machine have ? Some machines these day have so much RAM that Puppy wouldn't even think of going near a swap file.

Ok thanks.

I read somewhere that for 256 RAM or more a frugal is good but less than 256 a full harddrive install ..... is this correct or will a frugal work reasonably well with 128 RAM and a swap file ?

Any boot code needed for Gparted and Frugal install from CD

If I run a Puppy 4.13 live CD and then run GParted within puppy 4.13 to erase existing partitions on the hard disc and setup an ext2 and a linux swap partition, and then use the universal install to frugal install puppy ...... Do I need to use any boot codes when I start the live CD or is the defaul...

So I would basically change my Puppy in whatever way I want in look and content and then Dougal remaster it as a live CD ? Some simple questions : Would this live CD allow other to frugal install it ? (Assuming the Puppy I remaster it from has a frugal install option still available) How do you stop...

Is there a 'How to make a Puppy derrivative' ?

Is there a post on 'How to make a Puppy derrivative' ? If not can someone explain how it is done, just a rough guide to what is involved, so that I can begin to see how it is done. Is it simple or hard .... is it simply remastering the Puppy setup that you have on a PC or does it involve computer pr...

Just installed the latest NOP. Excellent. So easy to create desktop launchers as it offers you the likely programs as you type the name and it is all done for you. Excellent. I must try CUPS too sometime - trying it with 3.01 I gave up as it spewed out tons of pages from an HP. Pwidgets and flash :)...

For future reference, is there a way of editing what grub puts on the MBR. It must have indicated to look on hda3 for the menu.lst (fwhich DSL created), whereas if i could have made it look on hda1 instead that would have been the simple solution. Is there an editable file on the MBR ? If so how do ...

Thanks zigbert but DSL had written a new Grub to the MBR I managed to point it back. Booted up from a PUppy live CD using pfix=ram Mounted partition hda1 and moved the menu.lst file into another folder. Then used Menu - utility - Grub bootloader config to setup a new grub on hda1 Then deleted the ne...

Selecting Puppy menu Grub file instead of another

Hi I installed DSL to another partition (hda3) and it changed the GRUB to point to its own. I can still see the Puppy menu file that I want to use on Puppy's partition (hda1) . Is there an easy way I can change back the boot pointer to point to Puppy's GRUB menu file instead of DSL's GRUB menu ? Tha...

jake_take, yes, the Network Wizard is buggy Is the network wizard only buggy in Puppy 4 because WPA worked flawlessly for me in Puppy 3 using a Netgear WG511T (atheros chipset) , it configured first time and stored its settings and work automatically on every boot. I'm now sad that it doesn't work ...

I'm having a problem with Netgear WG511T (atheros chipset) and WPA in Dingo. Sadly NOP4 isn't working for me. The WPA wireless connection is constantly giving problems and won't start on reboot, fails to acquire a WPA connection, and sometimes establishes itself on 'testing' ath0. It is also difficult to get it re-established. I'm using a Netgear WGT511T and WPA which work f...
