I made those changes long ago... removed the bashisms from those scripts, and others.. That explains why I immediately noticed that Akita felt much faster. The speed problem with Wary 5.5 (not 4.5 as I mis-stated) was due to LANG=en_US.UTF8. After changing it to en_US the speed of Wary is now as fast as Akita. Now to find out why. Note that this issue is only probably noticeable on a super slow cpu.

I'm testing Wary 4.5 and Akita B14 on a Wyse SX0 366mhz thin client box and both work fairly well, but Akita is much faster while launching apps.
