Thanks for the reply. It's what I thought. Originally, my timeout was 10 but I increased it to 20. It seems to ignore the timeout completely.

grub4dos menu doesn't stay long enough to choose - SOLVED

Hi, I was running a multi-boot system (using grub4dos) with orecise, lubuntu and window Xp pro and some other puppies. Windows had a problem, and the upshot was that it re-installed itself and took over the mbr. I ran precise (from disk) and re-installed grub4dos. The menu.lst was still there so I t...

Welcome to the forum. Once you have put in your particulars you should be able to bring up a terminal/console - they will be in your menu system probably under "Utility". My distro (being used here) has urvxt amd Lxterminal. Yours may be different. Type into the terminal at the prompt <lsu...

Glad you found the answer. For me, the easiest way to step through was to use the line

Code: Select all

trap "set+x; sleep 5; set -x" debug
at the start of the script. I could then go off and make a cup of coffee while it stepped through (allowing 5 secs per line) until it reached the offending line.

Thanks for the reply. Stepping through rc.shutdown, I found that the hangup was on ifplugd.sh (the Ethernet daemon) in /etc//init.d. I effectively killed it - there is no Ethernet cable, so the daemon is not required. I am most grateful for your help and info. rc.shutdown seems to be working through...

Thanks for the reply. Normally, after the "shutting down" message I get another message about the pupsave.sfs being already saved before the program terminates. In this case that doesn't happen, so I presume that it is hanging at the pupsave check. I'd hoped that someone would tell me whic...

LxPupSc17.07.01 won't shutdown cleanly - Solved

When I try to poweroff or reboot, the WM shuts down and I get a message that LxPupSc17.07.01 is shutting down. However, it doesn't poweroff or reboot but returns to the # prompt with a cursor. Putting in poweroff or reboot only starts up the same cycle - "LxPupSc17.07.01 is shutting down" ...

@tallboy So CUPS is using a browser to do its work. On the newer distros I've tested CUPS uses the default browser, which may or may not work on some rigs.
I suppose lpadmin was the reason CUPS was written :)

@tallboy The CUPS wizard loads localhost:631 into the browser's url field. The browser does not have to be online.

Welcome to the forum. If CUPS is installed (apparently, it depends on the version of puppy you are using) you will find that the HP Laserjet 3050 does have a driver available in CUPS 1.4. mostly_lurking 's link is quite comprehensive in its instructions about installing a printer, so you'll have to ...

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, they are not ROX desktop icons. The icon comes from a drag-and-drop in LxXenial16.08 and right-clicking produces a different set of options. In fact the code I was trying to compile was !#/bin/sh lxterminal -e foo.sh I was hoping that as the desktop icon would re...

Running Bash script in terminal automatically- Solved

I have a bash script which needs to run in a terminal. If i try running it from a desktop icon, I get the window saying "this looks like a shell script" and it gives some buttons for choices, which include one for running it in a terminal window. I want to bypass this interactive window an...

@ rcrsn51 As I've said on numerous occasions, I am most grateful for your help and expertise.. I spent the best part of a week before I came to ask for advic...

@ rcrsn51 I'm not actually using puppies for real. This test rig is an old one that runs WinXP. Lubuntu16.08, LxPupXenial16.08 and a number of older puppies incl Shiba, Carolina, Precisemate, Lucid 5.2.8 and others - but it is only a test rig, and my interest is purely academic. I would add that it ...

Whenever a driver is not available for a kernel, we get suggestions to try another puppy version. I just got LxPUPSc17.06 connected. but it had a major problem with the File Manager, which could not access the other parftitions. There were lines of text outside the WM about a dereferenced null point...

One of the most awesome commands in COBOL was one that allowed you to change lines of code retrospectively. A line "GOTO 47"(say) could be changed later in the script to " GOTO 75". Debugging was a nightmare. And those wrecked Hollerith data cards, which had to be prised out with...

Thanks for the reply. The rig I'm using is an Asrock K7VT6 mobo, Athlon XP 3000+pae, Radeon X800 GT AGP, 2GB RAM and 500GB HDD. Since VLC plays fine in Lubuntu16.08 and Windows XP on this rig, I had more or less ruled out a hardware problem. In addition, rendering is fine in the browser and other gr...
