I have to say, I just tested volumio against mpdpuppy...Maybe it is the Software, maybe the different Hardware, but my Alix / USB-Card Combo has beaten the hell out of the raspberry / volumio Combo...all with the same High-End Dac and Amps.

Has anyone tried mpdpup with even smaller boards than Alix ? Like Rasperry or cubieboard or similars ?

one question....how difficult would it be to have a choice between standard mpd and mopidy ? If i got it right mopidy does the same as mpd, but adds spotify...even mpad works with it....that would be extremely cool...highend for your own discs through mpdpup plus the flexibilty of spotify....my sono...

I think so....I am running a WaveIo as well...and have tried many Boards as described...but never had this issue.
