This looks very similar to the problem we're discussing in another thread. If the wireless connection is established, does iwconfig report "security key: off"? If so, try typing

iwconfig wlan0 key open s:xxxyourkeyxxx

and see if you can get an IP then.

I'm root in Puppy, but I think dosemu is not just for Puppy, and needs to be told to allow basic commands. I don't understand how to do this.

So does your card still connect, or are you worse off now? You might be better off going back to 2.14 and ndiswrapper, which definitely does work.

Dragonath, I'm a bit confused. You started off using ndiswrapper and had a connection up and running. Has the situation changed now?

As I'm running 2.14, I can't advise on this, but I'd be interested to know whether the re-install has got rid of the problem with RutilT. If not, it might be version related.

This seems to work for me with 2.14, though I get the vga fonts warning at startup, but it will not allow me to use the md command. How do I run dosemu as root?

dragonath, I can comfirm that RutilT works in 2.14, so I think a complete delete and install might be worth a try. It might also be worth trying to configure manually with iwconfig before you do that, though. If your basic problem is the same as mine - network wizard partially works and iwconfig lis...

iwconfig previously showed my security mode as restricted if I used the key option without "open", but I didn't realise the significance of this. It does look as if whether or not the security mode is set by the wizard depends on the card used.

Thanks kirk, After 30 posts, you've come up with the answer! Adding the word "open" to the iwconfig key command solves the problem for me, but presumably only because the IP previously obtained with RutilT is used, so this will not help dragonath, who has never stored an IP. Adding "o...

Thanks, tempestuous for the link to the manual setup procedure. I tried it and it doesn't work. It is probably rather out of date, and it also doesn't mention that you need the s: prefix for ASCII keys, which most beginners would be using. The odd thing about all this is that iwconfig shows key:off ...

Jonyo,

I think you misunderstand - RutilT gets an IP every time with no messing around. What I want to know is what RutilT does that the wizard (or dhcpcs) doesn't, so that I can put the necessary commands into whichever script runs dhcpcs on startup.

It seems pretty clear that there are problems with setting up wireless connections in Puppy, and it would be a big help if someone could explain how to do this using commands. Even though I can use RutilT to get an IP address I would like to have this happen automatically on startup. The situation f...

I don't understand this, as I thought there was no choice but to be the root user in Puppy. Hopefully somebody knowledgeable will know the answer. Otherwise, I can only say that I've had no problem running it with 2.14, so you may have found a 2.16 bug.

It came with 2.14, in the menu under network. You have to get ndiswrapper working first, though. Does your PCMCIA card connect OK?

I have a similar problem with 2.14, where the wireless link is set up OK but neither dhcp or a fixed i/p works. If I run the RutilT utility, dhcp works perfectly every time. I have been trying to discover what RutilT does that the setup wizard doesn't, but with no luck so far. Running dhcpcd from th...

Decide What Puppy Is For

Let me say first that I know it seems churlish to criticize a project which people put so much effort into just for the satisfaction of it. I'm someone who came to Puppy because I wanted an OS which would run well on a Pentium 2. I get the impression that the original purpose of Puppy was to breathe...

Thank you PhilCoo for this. Although I cannot change the default language in Abiword from US and the instructions seem to be for 2.10, it does still seem to work OK.

Abiword 2.4.5 Spelling Checker

Can anyone tell me how to install a GB-English spelling checker for Abiword, please? All the information I've found does not seem to apply to Puppy 2.14.
