Thanks 666philb for the info. Tried the link and GE now fires up but the graphics are c**p. A small black square in the top left corner of the GE window and extreme tearing if I move anything. PupSysInfo lists my graphics card correctly as ATI Radeon HD 5750, using the radeon kernel driver. So not a...

I have looked in the GE sfs and and the extracted pet and there is no python stuff at all.
Had a good look at the GE forum link given by Mike Walsh - GE seems to have many problems!
Looks like I should think myself lucky that I have a version (the .pet) that works. I'll stick with that.

Cheers

FYI I downloaded the pet from xenialpup64's quickpet and as I said the pet loads ok and works. Change the pet to sfs and run it in a fresh xenialpup save file and all the above happens. Looks like I'll just have to use the pet. @Mike Got some other things to do right now - will follow up your links ...

@Greengeek: It works. I have made several files that write different numbers to "brightness" (300,500, 600, 700, 800). Just click on the files to vary the brightness - and putting the best one in startup works. Many thanks! @bigpup: Also works - but colours look a little washed out. Sticki...

Sorry about this - I must have been looking at the wrong usb stick! No syslinux on the right one. However, good news. Looking around found a file in /boot called "config-4.9.58". Opened this, searched for intel_pstate and found "config_x86_intel_pstate=y" (on line 680 of several ...

@Marv Thanks for your answer. I have never compiled a kernel so wouldn't know how to proceed. How do I pass your suggestion as a kernel parameter? I don't know if I am using syslinux or not, but it is on the usb stick. Does this mean it is being used? It was put there when I used the "UEFI inst...

Just to clear up a couple of things: Startup repair has been run from the install dvd several times with no joy. No partitioning was done prior to this problem. The partitions have been unchanged for several years. Windows was working ok right up to the time I ran grub4dos. Must admit I am beginning...

@mikeslr Sounds like your method is my best bet. I'll give it a try in the next few days (busy time at the moment). Does grub2 see 32 bit puppies? @foxpup Yes, bootmgr is on both sda1 & sda2 - I have no idea why. @bigpup Computer is a Mesh Elite ATX 750 - came with Win 7 pre-installed. Spec as m...

@bigpup Tried "cat sda_mbr.bak > /dev/sda" Did not seem to do much and windows still won't boot. Should it be "cat /dev/sda1/sda_mbr.bak > /dev/sda" ? Windows still won't boot and grub had stopped working. Back to a cd boot and run grub config again. Grub now works. What does &qu...

Can't boot windows 7 after installing Grub4dos

I don't use windows much these days (just the odd game or prog that won't run in puppy). Got fed up with firing up from cd all the time, so decided to install/use grub. Fired up Tahrpup 606 and ran grub4dos, but I made one mistake (I think!). I did not tick "Do not rewrite the existing boot rec...

Hi 666philb Many thanks for your quick reply. Tried the change kernel with my current save file - worked, but a bit messy. So tried again with no save file (ie a clean start) using your 3.14.11_PAE kernel. Worked great with 4 gigs showing. Installed my favourite programs - no problems. Sometime in t...

Just been trying 6.0.6 32 bit on my toshiba L350 laptop (dual core pentium, 4 gigs memory) with great success. Nothing I have tried has failed yet. However, a check with hardinfo shows it is only seeing 3 gigs of memory, which I assume means this is a non PAE compile. In contrast 6.0.5 32 bit sees a...
