@jamesbond: Thanks - my home LAN does run on IPv6 for some devices but there have been increasing drop-outs and I suspect there's an issue with either the router or the ISP. It did work in FatDog 64 for a while but IPv4 seems more reliable for now. I guess ISPs may be having all sorts of issues at t...

@jamesbond: thanks. Would that also apply to the wired ethernet connection I'm using? I guess they also have power management. It would be no trouble for me to run a background script doing a ping every five minutes or so to keep the connection alive. For now I've added 'blacklist=ipv6' to the kerne...

Networking issue

I'm having occasional issues with FatDog dropping the internet connection to my router, specifically a wired connection on eth0. I haven't yet worked out why but I think, judging by the behaviour of other laptops and other Puppy-based OSs, it might be related to another issue that caused me some tro...

I would like to say thanks to the FatDog team for this OS. I think it's the most polished and comprehensive Puppy variant since Jemimah's Fluppy (meaning no disrespect to those that have arrived in between then and now). It's an excellent piece of work.

Many thanks, Keef. Not sure where I went wrong with libetpan but this will help me when compiling future packages.

Thank you - that was quick! Seems to be working fine.

If you have a moment, can you tell me in general terms what you did? I'd like to find out where I went wrong for future reference.

Request for Claws-Mail

Could someone please build a Claws-Mail package for 810, with plug-ins and any dependencies? I've tried but failed to get Claws-Mail to build because it depends on libetpan but I couldn't get the latter to build due to a makefile error of some sort. If anyone could build this as a package I'd be gra...

I read through the thread on the Pale Moon forum and I'd still say "Thanks" to New Tobin Paradigm. He's known for being a bit fiery and has self-banned from that forum for a sabbatical over his own previous outbursts. In this case I think he's made his point fairly and it's his opinion (an...

Ah. It's on another page of that article: https://www.techarp.com/guides/complete-list-cpus-meltdown-spectre/#amd Thanks, ozsouth. Edit -- Phew. AMD "Turion line" CPUs are not affected. Or perhaps just too old to be listed? I have a couple of T7600 Intel Core 2 Duo machines that also aren...

I'm not sure that "local access" in this context means PHYSICAL access. I believe you are correct. I think that in security-nerd-speak, "local access" just means the code is running on the local machine, which might include JavaScript in a browser or, for server installations, a...

If the CPU is not Atom C3000 or E3900 there is NO Intel Management Engine. The 2008 reference is for desktop Nehalem CPU's. This is common FUD being sent all over. Regards 8Geee Thanks (I think you wrote while I was editing). This sounds more appealing. My Google-fu apparently isn't good enough to ...

There are some N2800 boxes around. These are 2-core Atoms using the Bonnell archetecture, and the last best processor that is EXEMPT from IME and Meltdown/Spectre. Cheers 8Geee Thanks, but given it's a >2008 design I suspect it might have the Intel Management Engine, and that's a no-no for me. No p...

I see a reference to the Intel Management Engine with Atom's being suseptible to THOSE things. The Two Atom Series are; C3xxx (Silvermont Architecture) AKA x3 series SoFIA E39xx (Silvermont Archetecture) AKA x5 series Apollo Lake So the Bonnell Architecture is EXEMPT. Regards 8Geee Seems to be, hen...

I have an AMD machine (A-series) that I can use, but for best security on that I'd have to shift away from my favourite Puppy distro to something with rolling updates to ensure all applications are Spectre-proofed, which would be a shame. Or wait for a Puppy to appear with an appropriately patched ...

That sounds right. My current 'solution' is to get hold of a 2009 Atom N280 thin client for sensitive online use. No speculative execution so should be invulnerable to Meltdown and Spectre... I think. It will be slow, though. I went for the earlier variant as later (but still pre-2013) Atoms presuma...

Short version: start Linux with pti=on in the kernel line of the bootloader. I don't see how that will help unless you're running a version of Linux with the patched kernel, which presumably almost none of us are. I can find no mention of the "pti" switch prior to these events, so I'd exp...

I believe 32-bit Skype for Linux has just been killed off, finally. I can't even get it to launch any more: splash/login screen and then nothing. It was working last week.

No big loss but I'd like to confirm it's not just me: does anybody have 32-bit Skype still working?
