slacko 6.1.0.1

Frugal USB install. Menu | Personal | Didwiki personal wiki : clicking on that, nothing seems to happen. Also, a few of the menu items open windows at the very top of the display - sending a mouse up there will activate the hidden tray, making it difficult to close any window. Had the issue with Hom...

slacko RC test

Downloaded and testing RC on Dell Latitude E5500 laptop. Booted to desktop and will be testing further: One ongoing and curious issue - I do a frugal install of puppies to a USB drive, and use Grub4Dos to create make it bootable. When I attempted first boot, it stops at "searching for puppy fil...

slacko and .deb

Might be off base here - but it could be that you are attempting to use a .deb package in Slacko? Slacko is based on Slackware - most of those packages end in .txz. .Deb is a Debian package that is used on derivatives like Ubuntu/Mint, or the puppy line of Lucid/Precise/Tahr. Perhaps changing Puppie...

hello: This is sometimes a power management issue: with some puppies (depending on kernel), wifi power settings on the newer kernels are incompatible with older gear: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=78613&sid=9114271c92855804ff1c7d744a27f4c9 Has also proved useful for the Slacko...

Muggins, Just FYI - getting a "error occurred" message when I attempted to download your keepassx pet in the referred post. Never had trouble with it before. Wonder if the forum still allows direct downloads of files? Didn't that change a year or so ago? Also, keepassx is in the slacko rep...

ChrisWill, Which version of Lucid are you running? One (slight) Achilles heel of Lucid was the interaction with certain sound cards. You might try looking at this site - the site was created by "playdayz" the lead developer of Lucid - I'm referring you to a help page he created which has a...

ubuntu forums hacked

Sky Aisling, I'd encourage you to modify the title of this thread in the interests of accuracy. It was the web-facing software that ran the Ubuntu Forums (vbulletin, I believe) that was hacked. The Ubuntu OS itself was not hacked; some readers might find the thread title a bit concerning. All the be...

running as root

tropicalretriever,

read Here: http://puppylinux.com/technical/root.htm

this is a good, and recently revised, entry on running as root written by Barry Kauler, the original developer of Puppy Linux. It should answer some of your questions.

johnfriction - My take...Puppy isn't really a curated distro, in the sense that someone doesn't check the code on many of the .pets on the forum. I usually only use .pets from the "official" repositories in the PPM (or you can google something like "ibiblio puppy" and install fro...

Logdog, Welcome to the forum. I am, however, the bearer of grim news. IF, as the link provided by starhawk suggests, that desktop has the intel 845G graphics controller, you are in for nothing but misery. You can start a terminal, and type in "lscpi" and you should get the graphics control...

Opera goes Chrome

Also posted under the browsers section, but noticed that Opera has given up their independent browser engine efforts, and will base all future releases on Webkit, and it seems, Chromium. No indication what will become of their email client. The WebKit engine is already very good, and we aim to take ...

Sounds like Opera has thrown in the towel, and will be using Chromium and WebKit as the brains of its browser going forward. Will be interesting to see how they repackage it, and what becomes of their email client. http://www.zdnet.com/opera-joins-chrome-and-safari-in-using-webkit-for-web-browsing-7...

Hope that helps.
