I have a Compaq Presario F756NR Notebook. It's only a few years old, but it has no HDD and a broken optical drive. Puppy 5.25 runs very smoothly off of a 2GB flash drive. Everything hardware-wise seems to work fine, except for the special fn keys (volume, media buttons, etc). Although the brightness...

No dice... I can't start x that way for some reason... Compiz Manager starts fine without the command (and x is already running), but it simply doesn't work. I get no desktop effects whatsoever. Also I am having a problem where XFCE will not let me create shortcut keys for anything! Gahh! So many is...

No no... XFCE works fine... it's Compiz that's broken now. I'm not able to get any of the desktop effects running. Is there some sort of setting I need to turn on? I tried restarting and it didn't fix the problem. My install is not completely new... I removed the pre-installed games, but I really do...

Hm... it seems that it 5.25 there is a new problem... After installing the package compiz_xfce4-4.6.2-Lucid, Puppy Package Manager informs me that there packages libgoocanvas.so.3, libmlt++.so.3, libtcl8.5.so, and libtk8.5.so are missing. Both Compiz settings managers will run, but Compiz will refus...

Hm... I'll have to try that.

Unfortunately, there's been a problem with my Puppy lately with shutting off the computer and saving my pupsave. I think I'll have to get around to making a new bootable USB, but I'll definitely try restarting!

Thanks for your response. :D

Ahh okay. I've definitely narrowed the issue down specifically to Emerald itself. XFCE works just fine by itself, but as soon as Compiz is installed (which uses Emerald), the window borders disappear. If only I could find a way to NOT use Emerald. The solution someone else used for this didn't work ...

XFCE missing window borders!

Hey everyone. Puppy has done wonders for my laptop, but I'm having a bit of an issue. I installed Compiz and XFCE, but upon switching to XFCE, I have noticed that all of my window borders are gone! I have a feeling part of this is because of issues with Emerald. I can open a theme in Emerald just fi...

Yay puppy!

I've played with Puppy on the past on some old machines, but I never really got into it. That is, until my laptop killed both my hard disk (which actually works in other computers, go figure) and my DVD RW drive. It is also very slow to turn on. Now let's add Puppy! Yay! My laptop is usable again! T...

Thanks for the comments guys! Unfortunately I had to move the wireless card to a different computer so I have no use for Puppy on it for now. :/ But when I get around to buying a new wireless card I'll probably start using Puppy again.

Re: Uninstalling PETs that came with Puppy

Why? Why do you want to remove these programs? Are they causing a problem? You won't gain much space by doing so. I've already stated that I do not use many of the programs that come pre-installed. They become an annoyance as the menu gets larger with each PET I install. Clutter frustrates me. I wi...

The applications you want to remove are in the puppy sfs file. This file is read only. To remove those programs a remaster can be done, so another puppy sfs is created without these programs. But I fail to see why you would like to remove those programs. Oh read only? Rats. I don't have a CD burner...

Err.... I don't want to remaster a live CD, I just want to change the programs I have.

The program in the link above said tested, but not working in 4.3.1.

Uninstalling PETs that came with Puppy

Okay, I bet there's something obvious that I'm not seeing, but is there any way to uninstall programs that came with Puppy like Inkscape or SeaMonkey for example? I'm running 4.3.1. I searched around and found something called Pet-Be-Gone, but it seems to be only compatible with Puppy versions less ...

Slowness can occur from reading the .sfs from the CD (so copy it to the HDD, next to your pupsave, which is much faster). And slowness or instabilities will occur when you become memory-bound. Your machine is slightly faster than my slow laptop. I wouldn't expect huge performance from it. My old 90...

racie, I did want to keep my XP on my laptop as well, so I opted for the Lin'N'Win method . I didn't have to create a partition whatsoever. Wow, that link looks perfect! I have two questions though... 1. Will Puppy still run very slow unless I create a swap file? 2. Why does the tutorial want me to...

Ahh yes. Thank you for the responses! I forgot to mention that I DID want to keep Windows 98 and just use Puppy from the liveCD. I can only set aside about 1 to 1.5 GB of space to Puppy if I need to install it to the hard disk. Otherwise, I'd really like to use a liveCD in tandem with a USB to save ...

Puppy runs slow

Hey everyone. I'm new to Puppy Linux and I want to use it on an old desktop that runs Windows 98. I picked Puppy because it doesn't need to be installed to a hard disk and it's very lightweight. Now... when I run Puppy off of a USB, it runs VERY slowly to the point of freezing if you're not careful....
