After re-installing Windows from scratch and then getting the same problem again I had a flash of inspiration and uninstalled Flashfire. The next time I ran Chkdisk, it tidied up a whole lot of mess and since then the XP install has been stable.

It's a safe bet that the XP boot problems are due to only having 5% free drivespace. (that's a 30 gig HD, right?) Your diskfree space is probably less than you RAM at this point.
