Sound muted by default is much more common than it might seem. alsamixer must be run from an Xterm or in the console.

Which puppy did you try? Have you tried others? Did you verify that your CD was burned successfully(does it work on another machine?)

I would recommend trying again with an older or newer puppy, especially one with a different kernel version.
