you might have more luck with Windows 98, but it will probably drive you nuts every time you plug in a new USB device . . .

A little paranoia is healthy if you do a lot of financial transactions online. Share Trading, eBay, online banking, or whatever.

When I used to run Windows I saw plenty of Trojans and Keyloggers get picked up by AVG Free and SpyBot.

Before doing anything else I would completely erase Ubuntu. When I first started with Linux I tried Ubuntu on a couple of my "found in dumpster" PCs and when I tried to switch over to Puppy, the Ubuntu install seemed to Bork a few things, including the video. It was like Ubuntu had install...

I remember just before I converted to Puppy and I was still doing everything in Win XP, a guy at work loaned me a copy of Australian PC User Magazine and they said that the best anti-virus was AVG Free and the best anti-spyware was SpyBot Search & Destroy (also a free download). So off I go, Goo...

Sylvander's method worked for me. IMHO it's the safest way to surf the Web, use eBay, online banking, etc. You can run Puppy without saving to Disk at all, so if any malware gets in, it only gets in to RAM. When you switch off the PC the contents of RAM (including any malware) disappears. Another se...

If there was no mess, life would be very boring. According to the Cnet archive, your PC had 256mb of RAM when it left the factory, so we'll assume you have 256mb of RAM. To run any version of Puppy successfully, you need to create a 256 mb Swap Partition (or Swap File). First though, what is on the ...

if your PC has less than 512mb of RAM you will need a Swap Partition (or Swap File) so that RAM + Swap = 512mb Reboot and Puppy will use the Swap as extra "virtual RAM" my Toshiba 1800-s203 laptop (circa 1999) also has a Trident CyberBlade video card and it runs good on Puppy 431 Retro (th...

If all else fails I would set up another partition, do a Frugal Install into the new partition, then amend Grub so you have a choice at bootup between Full and Frugal.

It's a long-shot, but sometimes one install method works when the other don't.

These are blank "marker" files needed to boot Puppy.

Not true.
Then why does Puppy Universal Installer always create them ? Is this a hangover from Puppy 2 series or something ?

I know the feeling. It's like your brain has been drained. Without those "marker" files and a few tweaks to the menu.lst file, Puppy won't boot from the HDD. Your CD worked today - you'll just have to hope it works tomorrow. Your menu.lst file will need to be edited to look something like ...

If you have a working Floppy Drive, I would create a WakePup2 Floppy. That will give you another way to Boot if the CD Drive decides to "down tools" and go on Strike. But first you'll need to download this Pet from the Web and install it to a PC with a working Floppy Drive: http://www.file...

Looking good. We're almost there :D

Give us a look at the contents of /boot/grub

Then copy the contents of menu.lst (its a file located in /boot/grub) into your next Post

All screened out, huh ??? MBR is the Master Boot Record. When you install Windows or Ubuntu, they put their own bootloader into the MBR (without even telling you - which I think is a bit rude). What I like most about Puppy is that it tells you what it's doing, explains a few things, gives you option...

Fortunately this is not a big deal.

To install Legacy Grub:
1. click Menu > System > Grub bootloader config
2. choose Simple install
3. choose Standard console
4. /dev/sda1 (as the location for the Grub files to go into)
5. install Grub to the MBR

Then you should be able to boot from the HDD.

Smaller JPGs and PNGs will show, while larger ones behave in this way. I've used MtPaint to "crop" my PNG, so it should display directly. As you can see, my /boot/grub folder has a lot of files in it that are not in your /boot/grub. I'm running 431 Retro , you have 431, so our /boot/grub s...
