511

Thanks to all who offered help. I was the author of my own misfortune. When I downloaded 511, I extracted the appropriate files and copied them to the directory which contains all my other frugal installations, under its own subdirectory. Altered the Grub list file and so accessed 511 as I do the ot...

puppy-511

I've been very happy with 431 but thought I'd have a look at 511. Installed it as a frugal as I do with all puppies. Set 511 up with my usual preferences, but when I rebooted, the system simply closed down. No opportunity to create a save file on the hard disk. OK, so I can fix this via the console,...

ibiblio

Thanks for all your suggestions, folks. Tried ibiblio once again last night and left the machine running. Wget cycled through the six addresses as they timed out one after the other, finally giving up after five and a half hours. Upnorth: I had been looking in in the wrong place in nluug (under pupp...

Unable to download Quirky 008 from Ibiblio

I have just spent four hours trying to download quirky 008 from Ibiblio with no success. What is the point of uploading to a site which can't provide the download within a reasonable time? Is there no alternative?

I found a good one. Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 works out of the box with Skype 2.0.0.72 on Puppy 4.1.

Barry, After my previous post I moved to reboot. At the ".......you may remove the CD/DVD if you wish......." prompt I chose to remove. This time, with the fresh install, there was no problem. Shutdown went faultlessly. I booted this install again. When I shutdown, I chose not to save the ...

Barry, It occurred to me that using cddetect starting with a fresh system would remove a possible source of confusion. Accordingly, I burned a fresh DVD, booted from it and immediately ran cddetect. #./cddetect -d/dev/hdc start track: 1, end track 1 cdromreadraw: Input/output error 1: adr:1, ctrl:4,...

Barry, The first test was done with 5 sessions already saved. The following is the output with 6 sessions saved. #./cddetect -d/dev/hdc start track: 1, end track 2 cdromreadraw: Input/output error cdromreadraw: Input/output error 1: adr:1, ctrl:4, format:2, 00:02:00 ( 150), datamode:3 [data] 2: adr:...

2.17 Multi-Session DVD Shutdown

At shutdown or reboot, the user is given the option of leaving the disk in the tray or removing it. If it is removed and the tray closed, an error message appears........"..........tray open.........insert media and/or close tray and press ENTER". The tray is definitely not open. I don't w...

Printing Web Pages with Opera (SOLVED)

Can anyone tell me how to set up Opera printing for Web pages? I've tried all the combinations I can think of in the Printer section of opera:config, but can't get it right. A dialogue box pops up which says 'printing' but nothing goes to the printer queue. The printer is an Epson on a parallel port...

Thanks, Dougal. That's one of the details of the modern Puppy that I had forgotten about. Since your post I have been running a frugal install of John Murga's Mean Puppy on 96 Mb ram with a 68 Mb swap partition, and so far I have had no glitches. Seems very stable indeed. I chose Mean Puppy because ...

The machine that started this thread was one I knocked together from a box of obsolete parts so that a friend could have something which would give him a taste of Puppy. A ten year old motherboard, 233Mhz Cyrix processor, two very small HDs, CD Rom and 160 Mb memory. Before I handed it over, I thoug...

How to install 2.16 on 325 MB HDD? (Solved)

Old machine. 325 Mb HD. Puppy runs ok from CD, but want to install Frugal Puppy on HD. Floppy boot is a non -starter. Want GRUB. Now, using the Universal Installer, it appears that to get GRUB on the system one must have another OS already installed. To that end, I installed a minimal version of Win...

Gparted in Puppy216-alpha

I found the same difficulty as rerwin. All attempts to create and format new partitions on a laptop hard drive failed when using Gparted in Puppy216-alpha. Pulled out of 216 without saving and booted from 215. Gparted performed perfectly.
