Puppy to replace Android?

What happened to attempt to put Puppy on phone? I realize most better phones are Cortex cpus. 2 GB ram is now the norm., no prob. for Puppy. I'm thinking the simplest level, phone calls, txt. Then internet access, movies, music, emal, etc. make PlayStore work? who cares! don't want McDs.! Puppy coul...

Hi bigpup; It`s been a really long time, huh? Hope you are well... What I see is this subject has been talked about a lot on the forum. And as usual nothing is done to fix it permanently. I talked about this "boot bug" years ago. pmedia= ....... Does nothing to fix this. Puppy Event Manage...

Hello. I posted a thread asking for removal of flash drive boot code.
New flash drives ( USB & SD ) last about as long as H.D.s now.

Who maintains boot code? Remove flash drive boot type.

I use a USB 64gb flash drive for my main HD. The flash drive handling code is out dated. Save file in ram is no longer needed. I`ve tried to fix this, but boot code`s messy. Remove the flash drive boot type and code. These are the sections to remove: 1) Code that sets up the save file in ram. 2) Cod...

Chrome with NetFlix already setup.

As title says; A newer Chrome browser with all that is required to play NetFlix. Searching Google produces a variety of info. on the subject, making getting NetFlix setup properly kinda iffy. Any other good addons would be welcome also. They can be used, or not. Builds for newer and older Puppies wo...

Thanks nic007! The initrd.gz edit looks like exactly what I was talking about!

Now maybe I can write a Bash script to mod. the initrd.gz file for anyone.
The mod. would make boot arg.: pmedia=atahd force: pupmode=12 ( As it should...)

Wow! So much effort for something that should be a simple option. This really smacks of a poorly conceived setup. Thanks nic007; My cheap MB only has one USB boot option. It`s hard to imagine it would make any difference though. This is simply Puppy boot code being obstinate and dogged ( pun...). I ...

Hi again watchdog; Thanks for the help. I don`t think the speed of the drive is relevant. As I said, Puppy shuts down properly when PUPSTATE is modded, but it rewrites PUPSTATE at every boot back to the original setting. So it`s never running in the proper pupmode. And usbhd or atahd makes no differ...

Removed the save file, booted with: pmedia=atahd, PUPSTATE shows: PUPMODE=5 Rebooted and saved a 64MB file, at next startup PUPSTATE shows: PUPMODE=13, and it saves on shutdown/reboot. Having pmedia=usbhd or pmedia=atahd seems to make no difference. When I change PUPSTATE to: PUPMODE=12, then it shu...

nic007; Yes, but for flash media Save is copied to ram causing the need for saving. H.D. setup mounts save file directly as top union layer, no copy in ram, no saving. Newer flash media has much longer life, so a saving setup is not needed at all. Puppy should catch up with the times and adapt for t...

watchdog; My intention is to use my USB flash drive like a H.D. The Save file on the USB would be mounted directly as the top union layer. This how a H.D. install does it. But any flash chip install uses "saving". Newer flash devices have better life span, so there`s no need to "baby&...

It says pupmode=13 , which does periodic saves from Save copy in ram. So if there are periodic saves, then the working Save overlay is in ram. With pmedia=atahd I would think this would not be the case. It should use the mounted Save file directly from the USB flash drive. Apparently Puppy thinks it...

Using setting: pmedia=atahd Nothing is saved like a H.D.

It seems that using: pmedia=atahd does not mount the Save file directly.
It is necessary to click the Save icon on the desktop to save any changes.

Something is missing in my quest to use my 64GB USB flash drive like a H.D.

slavvo67; A save file or partition is always required.

Any Puppy files can be on most any drive attached to the PC.
Puppy on a flash drive and the save file on an H.D.

Update: I tried pmedia=usbhd and it messed with my current PC badly.
Then I tried pmedia=atahd and it seems to be working very nicely.
The USB flash drive is now working just as the H.D. before it did.

Many thanks to all you guys for your help. Puppy is a great distro.!

Hey Flash; Long time no talk to, good to hear from you.

I have old flash drives and none have ever failed.
But then I never used them for intensive duty either.

I just bought a 64GB for my main drive and am using a 2GB for swap.

Thanks drunkjedi and gyro; I didn`t think the pmedia values worked like that.
I`ll have to look at them again and see if it describes using them this way.
