Regarding NAS

Barry, I can recommend the Synology DS216J 2-Bay NAS. This is a reliable, fast and quiet NAS. The DiskStation OS is topnotch, with lots of configuration settings. It even has its own 'app' store! I use this NAS (in 'RAID 1' aka mirroring) for storage and streaming media. My older DS212j 2-bay unit I...

If it is a mild 'vibrating' sensation when you rub your finger lightly over an ungrounded chassis, then there are *two* of us with super powers ;-)

Just getting back to the RPi 3. Power up via GPIO 4 & 6. Small - very quiet - 5V fan + small heatsink (the tall one is too clumsy for such a small unit), mounted in free air (as per instructions!). QuirkyX 8.1.4. Steady T=36.48C; sounds about right to me. If you've put it in a box, recommend re...

For anyone wanting to delve further into the guts of the GPU, here's a page with GPU commands to play with:

# vcgencmd get_config int arm_freq=1200 It says right there that your CPU is running at 1.2GHz. Hmm, nope, that's not right. 'arm_freq=1200' doesn't change when I change the governor, so I'm reading that wrong. It's probably the maximum frequency the GPU allows the CPU to run at. This SoC is compli...

You'll most likely notice the heatsink get hotter (> 58 C)
If that is the external HS contact temperature, I wonder what it is inside the cpu?!
That's me being unclear. I actually meant that the SoC would get hotter, ie, greater than 58 C, making the heatsink hotter in turn.

TeX, have you changed any 'turbo' settings in config.txt ? I'm running with the default settings. What do you get when you run vcgencmd get_config int Here's the output I get when running the 'performance' governor # vcgencmd get_config int arm_freq=1200 audio_pwm_mode=1 config_hdmi_boost=5 core_fre...

"Running warm"

Barry, I saw your blog comment "Running warm". I think that you're running with the CPU scaling frequency governor set to the default powersave . That governor limits the CPU frequency to 600 MHz. If you change it to performance , the CPU frequency will double to 1.2 GHz and stay there. Yo...

EDIT: An important note regarding the stress tests made below. The Raspberry Pi 3 runs in a Powersaving mode by default. With the Pi3 in this mode, the CPU is only running at 600MHz and running the stress test will result in a deceptively low final temperature . To check the power mode the CPU is r...

I wonder if bluetooth works from inside that metal case? Quite well, surprisingly. The antenna in the die-cast case even picked up a BT speaker I had across the room, about 3 m (~10 ft) away. The case has narrow cutouts for cables (GPIO, camera, etc) and I would think that the radio signals easily ...

pakt, If you have your 8192cu dongle handy, would you mind trying this? You would have to do a reboot, or reload the module. I have a rtl8192cu USB adaptor that would load but not make a connection in version 8.1.1 . I will try your fix and see if a connection can be made. Oh, I have just realised ...

TeX, I'm doing some testing using another dongle, a Tenda W311M (Ralink RT5370, driver: rt2800usb) that does work OOTB with Quirky. I've also found a program, 'iperf', that you can run between the Pi3 and another PC (one runs as 'client', the other as 'server') to test wireless performance. It's ava...

Unfortunately, the 8192cu chip doesn't work with Quirky, at least mine doesn't, and there was one guy testing Quirky on the RPi forum reported the same thing. Anyway, if you get your 8192cu wifi dongle to work with Quirky, let me know. You're right Barry - my dongle doesn't work with Quirky either....

TeX, I don't recall if you mentioned anything about the AP you're using with your minimac/Pi3. Do you have another AP you can swap with to check if that's the weak Wi-Fi end :? Edit: Another thought - could some other device be interfering on the channel frequency you've set? Have you tried changing...
