I tried the retro version of 4.2.1 yesterday; it failed to find my Zyxel USB wifi adapter, which is no problem in earler standard versions (I haven't tried retro before). I was about to try 4.2.1 standard, but having read some of the other posts I think I'm probably better off sticking to 4.2.

Although the CD mount problem isn't solved, Seamonkey running on 4.2 does seems to be more stable with the swap file installed. Thanks again.

Thanks.

I think I'll just put up with what I have for the moment - I'm only using it for occasional web browsing, webmail and the odd hand of bridge.

No, I'm not using the retro version. What's the difference, please? I can't find any explanation on the site. Is 4.2 retro likely to be better than 4.1.2 standard, which seems to be no problem? I don't really want to go through the hassle of another large download and burn unless there's likely to b...

I didn't try SATA (it's 8 years old) but all the other combinations cause the boot to fail at the "searching for puppy files in computer disk drive" stage, with the error message "pup_420.sfs not found. dropping out to initial-ramdisk console. /bin/sh: can't access tty; job control tu...

Yes, I copied pup 420.sfs to the Home directory (sda2), which is where the Save file is. I'm using the standard version, not retro

Just looking again on my desktop PC, I notice that you had mount.ss - the . didn't show up on my laptop screen and I didn't include it - does that make a difference? rootfs on / type rootfs (rw) /dev/sda2 on /initrd/mnt/dev_save type fuseblk (rw,noatime,user_id=0,group_id=0,blksize=4096) /dev/loop1 ...

After further PMs with Béèm I have installed, mounted and tested a 256 Mb swap file and copied the 420.sfs file into Home. I am now running 4.2 again and my CD is still mounted!

Thanks, Bruce. I still can't see any effect from 420.sfs, and after exchanging PMs with Béèm I've decided to revert to 4.2.1 which was more stable on my system. I only use Puppy for web browsing - I still need Windows for other tasks - and that works perfectly well in 4.1.2, though I'll miss the des...

I have copied pup420.sfs onto my HDD; that in itself hasn't helped. I still have pup 410 and pup 412 there - can these be deleted?

I have also tried to create a swap file. It is an NTFS drive so I tried fsutil, but this wasn't recognised - is that perhaps not available in Windows 2000?

Thanks, all. I think I'm more confused now... It's sounding like I should delete my sfs file and reinstall, but I don't really want to do that, and in any case my CD drive was still mounted when I tried pfix=ram. I don't think a swap file is going to help much, because the HDD is old and slow; there...

Thanks, Sylvander. You're probably right - but two slight snags -

- I wouldn't have the faintest idea how to create a swap partition

- my HDD is tiny - 10 Gb - and already cluttered with Windows 2000 and all its service packs and updates (which is why I need Linux, of course!).

Flash wrote:Have you tried starting the 4.2 CD with the boot option puppy pfix=ram?
Thanks, but that seems to do something quite different - it ignores all my saved sessions, but the CD drive is still mounted.

4.2 CD won't unmount; 4.1.2 CD will

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I can't find it. I'm running Puppy on an 8 year old laptop with only 128 Mb of RAM. When I run 4.1.2 it loads completely into RAM and the CD drive is unmounted - I can remove the CD at any time. With 4.2, however, the CD has a mount symbol and it can't be unm...
