Thanks - tcsh now installed. Unfortunately my simplistic approach of using linux-brprinter-installer-1.0.4-1 failed - presumably because Puppy is so esoteric (compared to other distros where it has always been successful)! In fact dpkg didn't understand the switches thrown at it nor do the target fo...

For the Brother, all I need to know is how to get hold of tcsh - which is related to second question about libs etc in PPM or any other method (but perhaps it is buried somewhere in the 9 pages of that thread).

The main issue is with HPLip (or HPLipLie).

Just had the experience of old and new installs of Lupu_526 going through a sequence of FF updates - variously something like 5 > 12 > 17 > 25 in the space of 15min! Every time I checked Help to see what version it was now, it had started updating again... Anyway, if mozilla hadn't changed there num...

Thanks for your patience bigpup. From what you say all changes and additions are contained within the save files though I'm still puzzled why it is only the desktop icons are the only apparent affects of the crash and would have thought they formed part of the basic Puppy install. Just as a matter o...

HPlip in Lupu_526?

This is really two questions rolled into one. I would like to install HPlip => 3.11.10 to support an HP 5510e all-in-one . Search as I may, there is no reference to it in QuickPets or PPM. There is the option of downloading either the automatic or manual package from HP site but can find no way of c...

BackupsRme - normally! In the case of Puppy, it was not (and still is not) clear to me which file(s) would represent a useful backup. Furthermore, I'm not sure that backing up the "sav" file would have been effective since surely the original desktop icons are built in to Puppy itself? Any...

I'm perhaps not being very clear here. By fresh install I mean Puppy being installed to a separate usb stick so that I could copy PuppyPin (and globicons) to the corrupt version. The result was for the corrupt version to display a fresh desktop - but still missing the correct icons. The rest of my p...

You're right - I should have indicated that this is Lupu-526 on usb. Anyway, tried your suggestions without success. However, in the process had a look at PuppyPin (and globicons ) but could detect no errors there. The icons pointed to at /usr/local/apps/ display ok and that folder seems intact. So ...

Desktop icons not displaying correctly

Once again Puppy came to my rescue when hdd was threatening imminent failure and overheating my laptop. The latter was causing the machine to pre-emptively power off (for self protection). During rescue (data salvaging) session the machine powered off. Since then all the desktop app icons have rever...

Sorry, David - gave up on getting a response!

At least it's a relief to know I'm not alone with this issue but will have a play to see if a happy balance can be reached.

I'm surprised that nobody has an answer to this on such a usually helpful an informative forum! Not sure whether it's because the answer is too obvious, no one knows the answer or no one else has tried it? Only want it for completeness as everything else seems to be purring (and what a joy to have a...

Clock pwidget in xfce?

Using Puppy Lupo 5.2.6 and loving it. Just a liittle more house training to do...

Why does the Analogue Clock pwidget not show up in xfce (just a gap where it should be) and can I do anything about it? It's fine in OpenBox.

Thank you guys.

So your saying that although I'm currently running Puppy from a live CD, it will use an existing swap partition on the hdd?

[PS My point was that I know what a Gb or GB is but not a gB!]

Puppy 4.2.

The glyph at the bottom right of the panel (and the puppy space on the widget sidebar).

Also a 384Mb machine reports 1.2Gb of available space! (actually 1.2gB whatever that means).

Not sure. I had to follow a seemingly convoluted series of links to get to it - starting with the link given in your first post! (When the desktop first fires up it asks me to choose Shiney or Simple. Is that a clue?) Is there anyway I can tell from the distro? Anyway I shall persevere as I like its...

Success on all 4 machines.

The order is obviously critical.

I do as above first THEN set up the addresses. IF I get it right first time then all is well. Fail and it'll probably never work in that session...

Thanks for your reply, belfasteddie.

I already do exactly as you describe - except that I use static IP.

It seems that the information in that dialogue is never (fully) associated with the rest of the profile and/or it corrupts the IP settings to 0.0.0.0 (although the DNS servers are retained).

Home n/w seen - but nobody at home! [Resolved]

My machines have D-Link, Belkin x2 (6001 and 7000) and Realtek wifi through a D-Link access point. This all works fine in Windows and most other Linux distros. Although my network is seen when I scan - so its is presumably not a hardware issue - it is very hit (5%) and miss (95%) whether I'll get a ...

Memory mysteries

On machines with 1Gb of ram, 1.5Gb is shown as available.

On the machine with 2Gb available memory is shown as 958Mb.

Is this a "feature"?
