Direct from ISO on HD or USB?

Puppy user here for 4-5 years, always first burning the ISO to CD. Is there a Puppy-specific installation routine to install without the intermediate CD step? I have tried the too-much automagical routines I find for Linux distros generally, and they have not worked. I assume that prime-time ready m...

Ogg codec settings in PMusic 4.1.1

1. With Slacko 5.5 and 5.6, at least, the bitrate settings, at least above 124kb, are ignored when I encode with ogg , and the resultant files seem instead to be about the size of flac-encoded ones, roughly half the original size. 2. It is not clear that the "presets" on the left of the &q...

I see from the post I copied to the next paragraph, found with a search of recent WWW stuff, that this seems a generalized problem with Google's imposed email message composer. The odds the author is using Opera and Puppy Linux are minimal. I've had all the problems he / she complains of. Sure, I ca...

New, August 2013 Gmail problems for Opera

Google's newly imposed editing page and java scipt causes Puppy, , even to pegging a Thinkpad t42 CPU to overheating. I do know the problems are lesser or absent in a Mozilla browser. I doubt they are particular to Slacko, and wonder if they would be common to all 'nix. I suppose increased traffic t...

"Cannot find synaptics properties"

This message does NOT come up when booting from CD. It does come up after Puppy reads from the saved configuration file, after the touchpad settings have been adjusted, as they must be here on an IBM thinkpad, to gear the finger higher. Also needed, if possible: "Restore orignial settings"...

I have been unable to find consistent save file behavior for Quirky Nop 1.2, though I prefer to it the 4.3.1 release I've been using. If I boot with CD priority, with Nop on a CD, and with the USB stick already plugged in, the pup-430.sfs gets seen, and I wind up with Puppy 4.3(x). How can I use Nop...

How to get Aqualung to label ripped tracks?

I'm a step behind, unfamiliar with playlists and "stores" managed through a user-owned database, as Aqualung does it. So, Aqualung knows and encodes, for albums it has matched in CDDB, the artist, song, album, etc. But, by default it does not label files with ripped tracks with those varia...

2.6.30.5 kernel NTFS driver sometimes loads, Puppy 4.31

Happens no more than one time out of twenty, booting from CD or USB stick. Red flag comes up, and difference in treatment of links is evident. Workaround is to unmount the spinning hdd with the NTFS partition and then mount it again. The better-behaving NTFS driver always is used to access it the se...

Man does Puppy -- and I mean available to all / most versions -- ever need a generalized browser manager for system-critical settings. That's if the proponents really want Puppy to hold onto newbies and amateurs like me. Simply cannot expect users to manage files causing system slowdowns, and bloat ...

No complaint, Jemimah, but I can't disable pwireless2 attempts to serve eth0, hardwired, before wireless on eth1 is taken care of. <smile> And on a 1 gig memory machine, I'm puzzled at hold-ups for write-backs to the puppy save file on the USB stick during regular operatio...

But, I couldn't write a playlist file to the NTFS volume from which I'd been listening to tracks. Will there be NTFS write support? Or is thi...

Methinks your USB is likely not bootable; and if it is, likely to an old, slow standard. So, boot from the CD, the preference of many with much newer hardware. Puppy writes "save files" with your work and with configurations and settings. Be aware that writing back to through a USB 1.0 or ...

I think Jan van Wijk got traction with support for OS/2 ,(now eComstation), after desktop use and support of the os was abandoned by IBM. Fully maintained. Yes, a commercial (one man) operation, but I think a current free-to-use limited-time release is always available. Unlike many other solutions, ...

How to recover Seamonkey?

Found a Seamonkey 2.0.3, though it is not obvious how within this forum. Seamonkey2.0.2q.pet promised not to change previous installation. After installation, Browse icon no longer starts SM 1.18, as it had before. And none of the helpfile methods for starting 2.0.3 start it either. If "q"...

Per suggestion, here's the screen shot. Note the 3 wireless beacon icons in the tray from pwireless2 and the double-screen wirelss icon, which flashes green from time to tiime, put there, presumably by pwireless. These appeared automagically, w/o active operator intervention since booting.

Geany and UTF-8 conversion

Melville's "Army of Shadows", with "Army" spelled in French is the problem. What, with Geany, is the solution? Or a pointer to what the user needs to know. I noticed that when trying to modify the text, the offending diacritical mark just got bumped back by the backspace key, rat...

Persistent Opera Cookies -- unique to Linux?

Despite checking "Delete new cookies when exiting Opera", I have many old cookies. Is this due to occasional improper exits and kills, and there being no facility to remove all cookies except with the individual cookie edit page? Or is this Puppy-specific? Opera 10.10 with Puppy 4.31, boot...
