The i810 driver is now being used and things seem just a tad better, but trying to "upgrade xorg" from the wizard leads me to install a package called "root" and it obviously fails. (To reproduce: Menu -> Setup -> Wizard Wizard [lol, the name itself is a bug] -> upgrade X drivers...

This is on a fresh installation Wary 5.1.1 on my Inspiron 2400. It's slow as molasses. I didn't do anything except install vlc and firefox -- and I'm pretty sure this problem existed well before then, too. "I'm running kernel 2.6.31.14" <-- How? [edit: from the blog post, I found this: htt...

Is this using the same kernel as 5.2? That utterly failed on my old Dell 2400 box... the kernel is simply not compatible with the system. Something is horribly wrong. 5.1 worked perfectly...I hope part of "cutting edge" means a new kernel this time around.

Quick update: with some tests with the RAM monitor open, I've observed it crashes for me with as low as 100MB of RAM in use. I thought this was a RAM problem so I ran mtestx86 4.10+ for a day, no errors. I tried Puppy 2.14X and it worked without a single crash, recognized and used the swap perfectly...

Gabe, I have done several hard disk "full" installs, and I have to agree at this point that booting from the CD and using a pupsave file is sometimes much better. Having to boot from a CD should not be a big deal and you can't trash your installation as easily. You can put your pupsave fi...

...I kind of changed my mind. I've tried different things for hours but it won't let me install no matter what I do. The universal installer is saying that I don't have any partitions and this is of course ridiculous since the drives at the bottom are clearly labeled hda1, hda2, etc. So I tried manu...

ttuuxxx: This is awesome!! 2.14X works without a single crash, everything is fine out of box... AND IT WORKS! The metacity themeset is lovely, and everything is so nice and polished (the only thing my mom hated was the "kid-like" window decorations, but changing them to a vista-lookalike w...

I understand the purpose of your project is small embedded systems/saa, but I'm curious as to whether this can turn an old (48MB RAM) desktop into something of a word processor/basic media player. Would turbopup be better for this purpose?

That took a couple of mouse clicks..... Incredible. I believe a pet changed them to icons (I forget which, darn it), and I haven't been able to change them back. In any case, can you change the jwm theme? To light blue, for instance? Use the JWM configuration and "Choose jwm theme." Like ...

Now try to use the program to change it back and forth. ;) And try to apply a theme with JWM configuration. (I think the one I tried was the light blue vista-basic looking one).

Not only that, the huge ISO size caused problems with low-ram computers, the sfs had to be split in two (this might be causing the boot problem I mentioned -- the 21MB sfs32948y23942343297.sfs or whatever can't be read because the system unmounts the usb stick), That might be, but using the zdrive ...

Re: Make stable

I have a 998MB swap partition at /dev/sda3, but it is never used. I've never seen puppy write a single byte to the swapfile, even though it says "Using swap at /dev/sda3" at bootup . The message seems alright. But type the 'free' command to confirm: free Or 'Htop' may show... It is strang...

Gabe, How about 431? That's what I mostly use. If you absolutely have to have OpenOffice, that could probably be done too, but there is a word processor & spreadsheet in 431 that is usefull for most things. My copy is running Firefox 3.6.12 for the browser. I recently installed 511 on a laptop ...

Hey ttuuxxx. *sigh* I think I've had enough of luci-242 (pre-Puppy 5.2) right now. My mom really needs her computer working, and there are simply way too many problems with 5.x right now, including random crashes. I think it might be my RAM. Could you help me out? I have 256MB RAM (htop reports 240M...

Re: Make stable

I got it to install by repeatedly booting up until it finally worked. One thing that helped was creating a pupsave file after it crashed. You may have RAM size problem. What size of RAM your PC has? You are right if you are saying Puppy-5.x are not friendly with 256MB RAM PC. As you know running Pu...

Another issue:

System becomes very unresponsive and shows this (see screenshot) after installing VLC and others. After about 3 minutes of stalling like this, I finally get the report that a dependency check has found no missing dependencies for this statically-compiled program!

I got it to install by repeatedly booting up until it finally worked. One thing that helped was creating a pupsave file after it crashed. My suspicion: the USB is temporarily unmounted or remounted, and during the time it isn't mounted the system tries to read from it and fails right after reaching ...

Luci-242 does NOT boot on my mom's Inspiron 2400, even with usbflash set. This is the first and only puppy that gets to the graphical interface and drops out in less than 1 second. No options in xorgwizard (including vesa) allow me to get X working again. This is first boot (clean). I'm speechless, ...

Hi playdayz and ttuuxxx, I just tried jwm-themes- 1 .pet on my Rewriteable DVD version of 241. It did not recognize the Save icon which was lost It did not recognize my only shortcut icon which was lost It repositioned the Trash icon. It (v. 1) does have its own attractive desktop icon and it is us...
